Pension arrears: Ex-soldiers set to protest at Defence ministry

Published

on

Retired military officers under the aegis of their association are set to protest at the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday over the non-implementation of the consequential adjustment to their pensions, following salary increases for serving military personnel.

One of the leaders of the retirees, Col Innocent Azubike (retd.), disclosed this in an interview on Monday, saying the protest was aimed at demanding what he described as the constitutional pension rights of military retirees.

Azubike said President Bola Tinubu approved a salary increase for military personnel in November 2025, which, according to him, should have resulted in a corresponding adjustment to the pensions of retired personnel.

He, however, lamented that the adjustment had yet to be implemented despite repeated acknowledgements by military authorities of the President’s approval.

He said, “We have a protest on Wednesday at the Ministry of Defence to demand our constitutional pension rights.

“In November last year, the President approved a new pay increase for the military, and it came with a consequential adjustment for retirees and pensioners.

“It was in the news throughout that November, and the high military authorities repeatedly thanked the President for the gesture.

“But suddenly, in July and August, it was not implemented, and they started changing their stories, as if it should be forgotten.”

According to him, the situation was further complicated by another salary increase announced for military personnel in August 2026, which is expected to take effect from September.

Azubike alleged that while funds had been computed for the implementation of the latest salary increase, the consequential adjustment for military pensioners was excluded.

He said the exclusion was the main reason for the planned protest, adding that the retirees were not opposed to the latest salary increase but demanded that pensioners be included in the consequential adjustment.

He said, “Another military salary increase was announced this August, totally ignoring that of last year. The new announcement is supposed to start implementation in September.

“They have computed the fund requirement for implementing this second announcement of pay increase. In their computation, they excluded pensioners and the consequential adjustment of pensioners’ pensions. That is the main issue we are protesting.”

Azubike warned that the exclusion of existing pensioners could create disparities between military personnel of the same rank and with similar years of service who retired at different times.

He explained that newly retired officers could earn substantially higher pensions because they would retire on the new salary structure, while officers of the same rank who retired earlier would continue to receive lower pensions.

“The implication is that when they raise the salary of serving personnel, those who will be retiring from the new salary scale, their pension will be far higher than their contemporaries of the same rank and equal number of years of service who had earlier retired.

“You could now have a situation where a recently retired captain, for example, could be receiving N500,000, while an older captain who had retired earlier could be receiving N250,000, and the same thing affects all the ranks.

“So, in demand of that consequential adjustment for pension, we are coming for the protest at the Ministry of Defence,” he said.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, declined to comment.

VIDEO: Some Nigerian pastors stage miracles – Prophet Odumeje

Published

on

Popular Anambra-based cleric Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, widely known as Odumeje, has alleged that numerous pastors in Nigeria routinely stage fake miracles to deceive congregants.

Speaking on a new episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, Odumeje expressed concerns over the prevalence of manufactured miracles, explaining why he consistently declines invitations to minister at other churches.

“Arrangees [staged miracles] in churches are becoming too much in Nigeria. That is why I don’t go to other clerics’ churches as guest minister. I have turned down a lot of invitations,” Odumeje stated.

The controversial cleric maintained that the healing miracles performed in his own ministry are genuine and easily verifiable through documented testimonies and participant details.

“The miracles we do here, we see their faces. You can take their names and verify,” he said.

Odumeje further claimed that no other living Nigerian Christian cleric matches his spiritual capabilities, singling out the late Prophet T.B. Joshua as his “father in the Lord” as the only exception.

Foreigners are now seeking Nigerian passports – Abike Dabiri-Erewa says

Published

on

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, says her office has received numerous appeals from foreign nationals interested in obtaining Nigerian passports.

Dabiri-Erewa made this known at a press briefing in Abuja, on Wednesday, October 21.

Dabiri-Erewa said the volume of requests had become significant, with some applicants asking her office to approach the President on their behalf. She stated that many of these foreigners have developed interest in Nigeria while others are considering investments and stronger connections with the country.

“On my table, you see a lot of people telling us to beg the President to be able to give them Nigerian passports. Ask the Minister of Interior. It’s too much,” she said

To illustrate her point, she recalled a woman who told her team during a recorded interaction that she had visited Nigeria and did not want to return to her country of residence.

Ogun schools shut, over 100 pupils hospitalised after deadly Gas leak

Published

on

The Ogun State Government has again shut some schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo after more than 100 pupils were reportedly hospitalised on Wednesday following exposure to an offensive gaseous substance.

The affected pupils were taken to the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, the General Hospital, Ijebu-Igbo, and other healthcare facilities for treatment.

Among the worst-hit schools were Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, Itamerin Comprehensive High School, and Ago-Iwoye.

A video circulating on social media showed some pupils fainting and being rushed to hospitals after inhaling the substance, which the state government had previously identified as methane.

A teacher at one of the affected schools, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, said the incident occurred at about 10am, when pupils and staff began experiencing breathing difficulties and fainting.

“The pupils and staff started inhaling the gas and began to have difficulty breathing. Some of them fainted and were rushed to hospitals,” the teacher said.

The teacher added that some schools in Ago-Iwoye had to close around 11am as the situation became increasingly alarming.

“The worst-hit schools include Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School and Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode. Some parents who heard about the incident also came to pick up their children because nobody knew what was happening,” the teacher said.

The teacher expressed concern that the gas emissions had been recurring since April, exposing pupils and school staff to repeated health risks.

“We are all anxious about our health and that of our pupils. I think it is taking the government too long to get to the root of this mysterious gas leakage. The government has to do something quickly before it gets too late,” the teacher added.

Wednesday’s incident was the fourth reported occurrence of the gaseous emissions in the Ijebu area since April, renewing concerns over the safety of pupils and residents.

However, the state government has assured the residents that the situation “is under control.”

In April, about 40 pupils were reportedly affected, while more than 120 others were hospitalised following another exposure in May. Another incident on June 1 reportedly left 69 pupils needing medical attention.

Schools previously affected included Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Epe Garage, Ijebu-Ode, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, and St Anthony Grammar School, Ijebu-Imusin, among others.

Following an earlier occurrence, Governor Dapo Abiodun said the state government was working with the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, and the Department of Geology at Olabisi Onabanjo University to establish the cause of the emissions.

Abiodun said gas analysers had been installed in affected schools after the first incident and that preliminary findings identified the substance as methane.

“Preliminary findings suggest there may be geological factors involved, possibly fault lines common to these locations, which could be responsible for the emissions.

We are awaiting the final report from the professionals handling the investigation,” the governor said in June.

When contacted on Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the government was on top of the situation.

Also speaking, a senior special assistant to the governor and general manager of the Ogun State Environmental Agency, Kehinde Bello, who visited affected areas in Ijebu-Ode and Ijebu-Igbo, linked the latest incident to underground gas emissions previously recorded in the area.

Bello said the situation was under control, assuring residents that the government would find a lasting solution to the recurring problem.

He said government investigations had indicated that the phenomenon was a natural occurrence associated with geological and tectonic fault lines, rather than sabotage or a gas pipeline leak.

Bello urged residents to remain calm, adding that the affected pupils were expected to recover after receiving medical attention.

He also advised residents exposed to the odour to cover their noses and mouths with wet handkerchiefs rather than wear nose masks.

PUNCH Metro reports that medical personnel were attending to the affected students at various hospitals as of the time of filing this report.

The latest incident has heightened concerns over the recurring emissions and the potential risks to children, teachers and other residents, amid calls for the government to establish the precise source and implement a lasting solution.
