Ex-servicemen suspend protest after defence minister assurance on Pension row

Published

on

Retired military personnel on Wednesday suspended their planned protest after the Minister of Defence, Gen Christopher Musa (retd.), assured them that the Federal Government would address their demands over pension adjustments and other welfare concerns.

The decision followed a meeting between representatives of the protesting ex-servicemen and officials of the Ministry of Defence at Ship House, Abuja.

One of the leaders of the protesters, Col Innocent Azubike (retd.), said the authorities had acknowledged that their demands were genuine and commenced steps towards addressing the issues.

“Authorities have accepted our cause was genuine and promised and initiated action also to compute our consequential allowance and include it in the fund requirement for implementation of the new outcome.

“That was mission achieved as far as we are concerned. And part of what really made them react was that the media was publicising it. They felt it was becoming a scandal and quickly solved the problem.

“At this moment, for me, I will be getting back to my station. All our people have dispersed,” Azubike said.

The Minister of Defence, who was represented at the meeting by the Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwah, assured the veterans that the government was committed to addressing their welfare, remuneration and pension concerns.

In a statement by the ministry’s spokesman, Henshaw Ogubike, Musa said issues relating to wage and pension adjustments were receiving urgent attention, with relevant military, pension and financial authorities being engaged to find a sustainable solution.

He said, “Concerns relating to wage and pension adjustments are receiving urgent attention, with relevant military, pension and financial authorities being engaged to achieve a fair, sustainable and implementable resolution that ensures veterans are not unfairly disadvantaged.”

The minister also appealed to the protesters to remain calm and embrace dialogue, stressing that any adjustment to veterans’ entitlements must be properly computed, adequately funded and implemented in line with existing approvals and regulations.

“Any adjustment to veterans’ entitlements must be properly computed, adequately funded and implemented in accordance with extant approvals, regulations and due process,” he said.

Musa further assured the veterans that the ministry would continue to engage their representatives and provide updates as progress was made on their demands.

The protest had earlier been disrupted by a heavy deployment of soldiers and policemen around the Ministry of Defence.

Our correspondent, who arrived at the ministry at about 8 am, observed personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Immigration Service and Vehicle Inspection Officers deployed around the venue.

Armed soldiers were also seen moving around the venue as security operatives took strategic positions along roads leading to the ministry.

The correspondent counted two armoured personnel carriers and more than 15 vehicles belonging to the police, Army, Immigration Service and VIO stationed at both ends of the roads around the protest venue.

The retired military personnel had attempted to converge at the ministry to protest what they described as the failure of the authorities to implement consequential pension adjustments arising from salary increases approved for serving military personnel.

The development reportedly resulted in a confrontation between some serving soldiers and the retired personnel as security operatives moved to prevent the veterans from assembling at the ministry.

The ex-servicemen are particularly demanding that pensioners benefit from consequential adjustments arising from salary increases approved for serving military personnel.

Azubike had earlier said the retirees were not opposed to salary increases for serving personnel but wanted corresponding adjustments to their pensions.

He also raised concerns over the latest salary increase announced for military personnel in August 2026, which is expected to take effect in September, alleging that pensioners were excluded from the computation.

In the minister’s statement, he acknowledged the sacrifices made by retired military personnel, stressing that their welfare remained a priority of the Federal Government.

“Concerns relating to wage and pension adjustments are receiving urgent attention, with relevant military, pension and financial authorities being engaged to achieve a fair, sustainable and implementable resolution that ensures veterans are not unfairly disadvantaged,” the statement read.

Musa assured the veterans that the Ministry of Defence would continue to engage their representatives and provide updates as progress was made on their demands.

He reiterated the government’s appreciation of the patriotism and sacrifices of military veterans, saying their service to the country must be recognised through sustained attention to their welfare and legitimate entitlements.

VIDEO: Some Nigerian pastors stage miracles – Prophet Odumeje

Published

on

Popular Anambra-based cleric Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, widely known as Odumeje, has alleged that numerous pastors in Nigeria routinely stage fake miracles to deceive congregants.

Speaking on a new episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, Odumeje expressed concerns over the prevalence of manufactured miracles, explaining why he consistently declines invitations to minister at other churches.

“Arrangees [staged miracles] in churches are becoming too much in Nigeria. That is why I don’t go to other clerics’ churches as guest minister. I have turned down a lot of invitations,” Odumeje stated.

The controversial cleric maintained that the healing miracles performed in his own ministry are genuine and easily verifiable through documented testimonies and participant details.

“The miracles we do here, we see their faces. You can take their names and verify,” he said.

Odumeje further claimed that no other living Nigerian Christian cleric matches his spiritual capabilities, singling out the late Prophet T.B. Joshua as his “father in the Lord” as the only exception.

Foreigners are now seeking Nigerian passports – Abike Dabiri-Erewa says

Published

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, says her office has received numerous appeals from foreign nationals interested in obtaining Nigerian passports.

Dabiri-Erewa made this known at a press briefing in Abuja, on Wednesday, October 21.

Dabiri-Erewa said the volume of requests had become significant, with some applicants asking her office to approach the President on their behalf. She stated that many of these foreigners have developed interest in Nigeria while others are considering investments and stronger connections with the country.

“On my table, you see a lot of people telling us to beg the President to be able to give them Nigerian passports. Ask the Minister of Interior. It’s too much,” she said

To illustrate her point, she recalled a woman who told her team during a recorded interaction that she had visited Nigeria and did not want to return to her country of residence.

Ogun schools shut, over 100 pupils hospitalised after deadly Gas leak

Published

on

The Ogun State Government has again shut some schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo after more than 100 pupils were reportedly hospitalised on Wednesday following exposure to an offensive gaseous substance.

The affected pupils were taken to the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, the General Hospital, Ijebu-Igbo, and other healthcare facilities for treatment.

Among the worst-hit schools were Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, Itamerin Comprehensive High School, and Ago-Iwoye.

A video circulating on social media showed some pupils fainting and being rushed to hospitals after inhaling the substance, which the state government had previously identified as methane.

A teacher at one of the affected schools, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, said the incident occurred at about 10am, when pupils and staff began experiencing breathing difficulties and fainting.

“The pupils and staff started inhaling the gas and began to have difficulty breathing. Some of them fainted and were rushed to hospitals,” the teacher said.

The teacher added that some schools in Ago-Iwoye had to close around 11am as the situation became increasingly alarming.

“The worst-hit schools include Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School and Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode. Some parents who heard about the incident also came to pick up their children because nobody knew what was happening,” the teacher said.

The teacher expressed concern that the gas emissions had been recurring since April, exposing pupils and school staff to repeated health risks.

“We are all anxious about our health and that of our pupils. I think it is taking the government too long to get to the root of this mysterious gas leakage. The government has to do something quickly before it gets too late,” the teacher added.

Wednesday’s incident was the fourth reported occurrence of the gaseous emissions in the Ijebu area since April, renewing concerns over the safety of pupils and residents.

However, the state government has assured the residents that the situation “is under control.”

In April, about 40 pupils were reportedly affected, while more than 120 others were hospitalised following another exposure in May. Another incident on June 1 reportedly left 69 pupils needing medical attention.

Schools previously affected included Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Epe Garage, Ijebu-Ode, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, and St Anthony Grammar School, Ijebu-Imusin, among others.

Following an earlier occurrence, Governor Dapo Abiodun said the state government was working with the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, and the Department of Geology at Olabisi Onabanjo University to establish the cause of the emissions.

Abiodun said gas analysers had been installed in affected schools after the first incident and that preliminary findings identified the substance as methane.

“Preliminary findings suggest there may be geological factors involved, possibly fault lines common to these locations, which could be responsible for the emissions.

We are awaiting the final report from the professionals handling the investigation,” the governor said in June.

When contacted on Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the government was on top of the situation.

Also speaking, a senior special assistant to the governor and general manager of the Ogun State Environmental Agency, Kehinde Bello, who visited affected areas in Ijebu-Ode and Ijebu-Igbo, linked the latest incident to underground gas emissions previously recorded in the area.

Bello said the situation was under control, assuring residents that the government would find a lasting solution to the recurring problem.

He said government investigations had indicated that the phenomenon was a natural occurrence associated with geological and tectonic fault lines, rather than sabotage or a gas pipeline leak.

Bello urged residents to remain calm, adding that the affected pupils were expected to recover after receiving medical attention.

He also advised residents exposed to the odour to cover their noses and mouths with wet handkerchiefs rather than wear nose masks.

PUNCH Metro reports that medical personnel were attending to the affected students at various hospitals as of the time of filing this report.

The latest incident has heightened concerns over the recurring emissions and the potential risks to children, teachers and other residents, amid calls for the government to establish the precise source and implement a lasting solution.
