NIGERIA AT 66: WE ARE CELEBRATING — BUT CAN WE ALSO BE HONEST?

Published

on

66 YEARS AFTER INDEPENDENCE, SHOULD AGE ALONE BE A REASON TO CELEBRATE?

Nigeria has enormous natural resources, a huge population, talented young people and one of Africa’s largest economies.

Yet millions of Nigerians are still struggling with the basics.

💔 FOOD IS TOO EXPENSIVE.
The World Bank says Nigeria’s food prices have placed severe pressure on households, with poor families spending as much as 70% of their income on food.

💔 POVERTY REMAINS WIDESPREAD.
World Bank projections put the share of Nigerians living below the lower-middle-income poverty line at about 62% in 2026.

💔 ELECTRICITY REMAINS A MAJOR CHALLENGE.
World Bank data show electricity access at about 62.5% of the population in 2024.

💔 JOBS ARE NOT KEEPING UP WITH THE POPULATION.
About 3.5 million people enter Nigeria’s labour force every year, while the World Bank says weak job creation remains a major challenge.

💔 INSECURITY CONTINUES TO AFFECT COMMUNITIES.
Banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and other security problems remain documented challenges across parts of the country.

And here is the uncomfortable part:

Nigeria is not without progress.

The World Bank reports that economic growth has strengthened and inflation has fallen considerably from its earlier peak. But it also says that household incomes have not fully recovered and poverty remains high.

So the real question for Nigeria at 66 is not simply:

“WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED?”

It is also:

“HAS DEVELOPMENT REACHED THE ORDINARY NIGERIAN?”

A new road means little to a family that cannot afford food.

Economic growth means little to a young person who cannot find productive work.

A wealthy nation means little to a citizen who cannot reliably access electricity, healthcare or security.

🇳🇬 66 YEARS IS A LONG TIME.

Perhaps the most important Independence Day conversation is not about speeches, flags or celebrations.

It is about what Nigerians can actually see, afford and experience in their daily lives.

Big Brother Naija winner, Phyna, has celebrated the fourth anniversary of her reality TV victory after making history as the winner of Nigeria’s first female celebrity boxing bout.

Phyna, whose real name is Ijeoma Otabor, won the seventh season of Big Brother Naija,
Level Up, on October 2, 2022. Four years later, the reality star marked the anniversary after defeating Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing by knockout.

Reflecting on the two milestones in a post shared on Friday, Phyna wrote, “October 2nd will forever be a special date in my life.

“Today marks the anniversary of the day I won BBN, and now, years later, I’m celebrating another historic victory becoming the first female boxer to step into this ring and win this fight. ”

The victory came during Balmoral Promotions’ Chaos in the Ring event at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Thursday.

The former reality star said her transition from reality television to boxing was part of her determination to challenge herself and break barriers.

“From reality TV to the boxing ring, I’ve always been willing to challenge myself, break barriers, and prove that there is so much more to Phyna than what people see,” she wrote.

“This one is for every woman who has ever been told she couldn’t. We can. We will. And we absolutely should.”

Phyna thanked Balmoral Promotions and Bet9ja for the opportunity, describing October 2 as “a date of victory, courage and new beginnings.”

She also received ₦50m as the winner of the historic bout and said she intends to pursue professional boxing, suggesting her victory over Nkechi could mark the start of a longer career in the sport.

Following the fight, Phyna named Nollywood actress Etinosa Idemudia as her next potential opponent, accusing her of disturbing her through direct messages.

“I came in, and I kept my cool and did the thing. Now I would like to fight Etinosa. I think it is time I teach her a lesson,” Phyna said after the bout.

Etinosa, who watched the fight from ringside, accepted the challenge, saying, “I have been advising you to carry the Edo name with pride. We do not run from any fight. I accept the challenge fully.”

Phyna’s victory came on the same night skit maker Carter Efe defeated musician Speed Darlington by technical knockout in their four-round celebrity bout.

The event also featured professional boxing, with Ghana’s Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah defeating Nigerian champion Godday “Zodsolo” Appah by unanimous decision to claim the WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental Championship.

Nigeria secures 10,000 extra slots, allocation hits 60,000 for Hajj

Published

on

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria said it has secured an additional 10,000 slots from Saudi Arabia for the 2027 Hajj, raising the country’s total allocation from 50,000 to 60,000 pilgrims.

The commission, in a statement by its Head, Information and Publications Division, Shafii Mohammed, on Thursday, said the additional slots comprise 7,500 allocated to state Muslim pilgrims welfare boards, agencies and commissions, while 2,500 slots were allocated to seven lead tour operator companies.

NAHCON Chairman/CEO, Amb Ismail Yusuf, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the Saudi Arabian authorities for the additional allocation, assuring that the slots would be administered transparently and in compliance with Nigerian and Saudi Arabian regulations.

The statement read, “The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria is pleased to announce that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has approved an additional 10,000 Hajj slots for Nigeria for the 2027 Hajj, following sustained high-level diplomatic engagements between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“The additional allocation brings Nigeria’s total Hajj allocation for the 2027 pilgrimage from 50,000 to 60,000 slots.

“For clarity, the 10,000 additional slots have been distributed as follows: 7,500 slots to state Muslim pilgrims welfare boards, agencies and commissions; and 2,500 slots to the seven (7) lead tour operator companies.

“Accordingly, the additional 10,000 slots represent an expansion of Nigeria’s existing 50,000-slot allocation, bringing the overall national allocation for the 2027 Hajj to 60,000 pilgrims.

“The Chairman/CEO of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, expressed the Commission’s profound appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for its continued support, guidance and commitment to the Hajj sector and the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims.”

NAHCON Chairman/CEO said the additional allocation underscored the longstanding cordial relationship between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, assuring that the slots would be transparently managed in accordance with the relevant regulations and operational requirements.

The statement stated, “Ambassador Yusuf reiterated NAHCON’s commitment to ensuring that Hajj remains affordable and accessible to Nigerians, while maintaining high standards of service delivery, regulatory compliance, accountability and operational efficiency.

“He further reaffirmed that the commission will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other stakeholders to ensure a well-coordinated 2027 Hajj and safeguard the dignity, welfare and overall interests of Nigerian pilgrims.”

Nigeria was initially allocated 50,000 slots for the 2027 Hajj, comprising 35,000 slots for government-sponsored pilgrims and 15,000 for licensed tour operators.

NAHCON had also said the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah required the biometric data of all intending pilgrims to be uploaded to the designated Nusuk-Masar platform by September 26.

Following the additional allocation, the commission is expected to review its timetable, particularly the deadline for uploading pilgrims’ biometric data.

If you have the solution in your hands, why keep waiting for heaven to do your part?

Pray for wisdom.
Think clearly.
Take responsibility.
