Let’s be honest.

Some African parents will proudly say, “My child speaks English very well,” but the same child cannot hold a basic conversation in the language of their own grandparents.

Why?

Because at home, the colonial language has gradually replaced the mother tongue.

English. French. Portuguese.

There is nothing wrong with learning these languages. They are important for education, business and global communication.

But the question is:

Why should speaking our own African language become something to be ashamed of?

A child should be able to say:

🗣️ “This is my language. This is my culture. This is where my family comes from.”

Our indigenous languages carry our proverbs, history, humour, traditional knowledge, names, stories and identity.

If parents stop speaking these languages to their children, who will teach the next generation?

And this is not only about Nigeria. Across Africa, many indigenous languages are under pressure as foreign languages dominate schools, workplaces, government and sometimes even our homes.

So let’s debate this honestly:

👉🏾 Should African parents deliberately speak their indigenous language with their children at home?

👉🏾 Or is it more important for children to become fluent in English, French or another international language?

👉🏾 Can we successfully teach children BOTH?

WHAT LANGUAGE DO YOU SPEAK WITH YOUR CHILDREN AT HOME — YOUR OWN LANGUAGE OR YOUR COLONIAL LANGUAGE?

👇🏾 Be honest. Tell us your language and your country in the comments.

Africa is deeply religious—but are we becoming more humane?

Across the continent, churches and mosques are filled every week. People pray, fast, give offerings, attend religious programmes and passionately defend their faith.

But outside those places of worship, millions still struggle with poverty, unemployment, hunger, poor healthcare and limited opportunities.

So here is the uncomfortable question:

What happens when religious devotion becomes louder than our concern for human suffering?

We can pray for the unemployed—but we should also ask what is preventing people from finding decent work.

We can pray for the sick—but we should also care about functioning healthcare systems.

We can pray for good leaders—but we should also demand accountability from those in power.

We can pray for the poor—but we should also ask what we are personally doing to help.

Prayer and practical action do not have to compete.

The real concern begins when religion becomes an excuse for doing nothing, questioning nothing and accepting suffering as if it cannot be changed.

Africa does not need a war against religion. It needs more compassion, critical thinking, responsibility, accountability and action alongside whatever faith people choose to practise.

Because perhaps the most important question is not:

“How religious are we?”

But:

“How much humanity is our religion producing?”

💬 What do you think: Is Africa becoming more religious—or more humane?

This is a question society needs to confront.

When someone dies, people can suddenly find money for burial ceremonies, funeral arrangements and other expenses.

But while that same person was alive and struggling, where were the people who could have helped?

A person may be hungry today, unable to pay rent, struggling with medical bills or simply going through a difficult period — yet the support may only come when it is too late.

Why do we sometimes show more generosity to the dead than compassion to the living?

Helping someone while they are alive may not make headlines, but it can change a life.

Don’t wait for someone’s funeral before showing them that they mattered.

💬 What is your honest opinion? Why do people sometimes find it easier to contribute after someone dies than to help while they are alive?
