The 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members kidnapped while travelling from Oyo State to the orientation camp in Abia State have regained their freedom.

They were freed seven days after they were abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha road in Umunoha, Imo State.

The details of the rescue operation were unavailable, but the  Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday, saying the victims had been taken for medical examination and necessary medical attention.

The hostages were reportedly rescued by a joint team of the Nigeria Police Force, Army, Department of State Services and other security agencies.

The victims were rescued at about 4:28 pm on Wednesday at Amakohia Ubi Village, Imo State, after sustained and coordinated search-and-rescue operations by the security agencies.

However, there was no information on the arrest of the perpetrators, who are at large.

The police statement read, “Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, have successfully rescued the 20 prospective NYSC corps members who were abducted in Imo State on 1st October, 2026.

‘’Following their safe recovery, the victims have been taken for medical examination and necessary medical attention as part of the post-rescue process.”

Iniedu further disclosed that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the masterminds of the abduction, adding that the police and other security agencies had intensified operations to bring them to justice.

“The Nigeria Police Force appreciates members of the public for their cooperation and support and reiterates its commitment to the protection of lives and property and the prompt response to threats to public safety,” the statement added.

The police said further updates would be communicated.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, confirmed the release of the captives, saying, “The kidnapped graduates have been released. The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, confirmed this in a telephone conversation at about 5.00 pm today (Wednesday).”

He stated this in a statement issued by his media aide, Adeola Oloko, in Ibadan.

A parent to one of the victims, Alhaja Alimot Akande, said, “We cannot say anything for now. We are extremely overwhelmed. We received the news with happiness. I cannot say anything for now, please. We are truly happy. Let’s see them first or speak with them on the telephone.”

Meanwhile, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has commended the security agencies for what he described as their swift intervention that led to the safe release of the prospective 20 youth corps members.

In a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, the governor said the state government deliberately adopted a discreet and coordinated approach to avoid releasing too much information to the public that could jeopardise the investigations.

He urged Nigerians to have faith in the Federal Government to overcome the security challenges facing the country.

According to him, the discreet and coordinated approach adopted by the security agencies was necessary to ensure the safe return of the victims.

‘’Because the issue involved the security of lives, the government was cautious about releasing too much information to the public; hence the discreet manner in which it was handled.”

The governor said he was “particularly grateful to the security agencies for the discreet and collaborative manner in which they tackled the challenge.”

Further, Uzodimma appreciated the parents and families of the prospective corps members for their patience and understanding throughout the difficult period.

He assured that the government would continue to support measures aimed at protecting the lives and property of citizens and ensuring peace across the country.

Meanwhile, the Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has lauded the safe return of the prospective corps members.

Publicity Secretary for Imo APC, Dr Jones Onwuasoanya, in a statement, stated, ‘’We rejoice with the family and relatives of these young patriots for their successful rescue, and commend all the gallant security personnel who took part in this audacious and well-coordinated rescue operation for their professionalism, bravery and patriotism.”

The party reassured that the government would relentlessly pursue the perpetrators and ensure that the state remains safe both for residents and travellers.

The PUNCH reported that 20 of 30 graduates, who were travelling in two buses from Ibadan to their NYSC orientation camp in Abia State, were kidnapped by suspected gunmen.

The abductors demanded N50 million each for the victims, amounting to N1 billion. They later reduced the ransom to N5 million per person, totalling N100 million.

The victims’ parents had appealed to the Olubadan of Ibadanland and the government for the rescue of their children.

The Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency, has received 180 Nigerian returnees from Sebha, Libya.

The agency disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday and posted on its X handle on Wednesday, noting that the returnees arrived at the Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State, at about 4:20 pm on Tuesday.

According to NEMA, the returnees were received under the Assisted Voluntary Return Programme coordinated by the International Organisation for Migration in collaboration with the Federal Government.

The returnees arrived aboard an Air Buraq Airlines flight with registration number 5A-BAE and were received by NEMA’s Lagos Operations Office in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.

The group comprised 143 adults, including 75 males and 68 females; 26 children, made up of 12 boys and 14 girls; and 11 infants, comprising three boys and eight girls.

“Upon arrival, officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service conducted biometric registration and documentation to establish the identities of the returnees, maintain accurate records and facilitate subsequent reintegration processes,” the statement said.

According to the agency, the returnees received immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, potable water and medical screening.

Egypt releases prominent journalist from custody

Published

on

Egyptian authorities released independent journalist Lina Attalah from custody on Tuesday, hours after she was detained and after a court ordered her website shut, her lawyer told AFP.

Attalah is one of Egypt’s most prominent journalists, and her detention had sparked swift condemnation from rights groups and press freedom advocates.

A court had earlier fined Attalah three million Egyptian pounds (around $53,400) for operating website Mada Masr without a licence, the maximum possible penalty for the misdemeanour she was charged with, and ordered Mada’s closure.

“Lina Attalah was released after we paid the said fine,” her lawyer Hassan al-Azhari said, referring to a three million Egyptian pound ($53,400) fine.

“In the process, we discovered that she had been sentenced in absentia in 2024 to a year in prison, as well as a fine of 20,000 Egyptian pounds,” he told AFP.

Attalah’s defence team has appealed that sentence, and a new court hearing is scheduled for November 11, Azhari said.

News of the release followed condemnation by rights groups of the detention, which they described as a sharp escalation in Cairo’s crackdown on press freedom.

Mada Masr says it has not received a response from authorities about its licence application since 2023.

The hours-long detention comes weeks after the arrest of an entire fact-checking newsroom, on charges of fake news, which are frequently levelled against media seen to be critical of the government.

Hossam Bahgat, head of prominent rights group the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), was present at the court and gave AFP an account of events leading up to the arrest.

During the hearing Tuesday, the defence team said the judge ordered the room cleared except for Attalah and her lawyers, before security officers also entered the room.

Attalah’s eight-person defence team had made procedural requests denied by the court, which then announced it had appointed its own lawyer for the journalist.

“In a move that astonished all those present, the judge recorded in the official court minutes that the court had appointed a lawyer from the Lawyers’ Syndicate to represent the defence,” Bahgat said.

“Lina herself spoke up to object to this lawyer being appointed to represent her, which the judge refused to record in the court minutes.”

“In an even more shocking turn, the judge proceeded to dictate motions on behalf of this lawyer — who had not uttered a single word — and entered them into the official record,” he added.

The judge then announced the fine and ordered Mada’s closure “amid shouts and protests from the defence”, before Attalah was detained by the security personnel in the room.

– ‘Wiping out’ free press

This was the sixth case brought against Attalah and Mada Masr in as many years, but none had ever gone to trial.

Egypt is currently holding 26 journalists in connection with their work, according to an EIPR tally.

The crackdown “can only mean that Egypt’s security agencies are moving from years of harassing independent media to wiping them out completely”, Bahgat had told AFP when Attalah was referred to trial.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) branded the court’s decision “outrageous” and “shameful”, urging authorities to release Attalah “at once”.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also condemned the verdict.

“If Egypt can put in custody one of its most respected editors and shut down her newsroom, no independent journalist in the country is safe,” CPJ regional director Sara Qudah said in a statement.

Earlier this month, six journalists from fact-checking platform Matsadaash were charged with terrorism offences, after being arrested in a series of raids in September.

EIPR, which represents the journalists, said they had reported torture following their arrests, allegations denied by the interior ministry.

Authorities accused them of links to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and spreading “rumours and false news” to undermine confidence in state institutions and incite people to protest.

They are currently being held in pretrial detention, which rights groups say can be extended for months or years before detainees are released or face trial.

Lagos gives residents December 31 deadline to get health insurance

Published

on

The Lagos State Government has given residents until December 31, 2026, to obtain health insurance, with enforcement of the mandatory coverage policy commencing on January 1, 2027.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated this on Tuesday while flagging off the enforcement of mandatory health insurance under Executive Order EO/BOS/01 of 2024.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Sanwo-Olu also unveiled the Lagos Private Health Plans, designed to extend health insurance coverage to salaried workers and corporate organisations.

The statement said the new plans would complement the existing Ilera Eko scheme for vulnerable residents and the informal sector.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu gave every resident until 31 December 2026 to obtain insurance cover, with enforcement commencing on 1 January 2027,” the statement read.

Speaking at an event attended by government officials, health practitioners and stakeholders from the public and private sectors in Victoria Island, the governor said the objective of the executive order was to ensure that every Lagos resident had health insurance and could access quality healthcare services without financial hardship.

He said, “The ultimate objective of the Executive Order went beyond enforcement, noting that it was to ensure that every Lagos resident was covered by health insurance and could access quality healthcare services without suffering financial hardship.”

The statement added that Sanwo-Olu said every resident, employer and worker in Lagos was required to have social health insurance, noting that the executive order placed responsibilities on individuals, employers and the government.

The governor explained that while Ilera Eko catered to vulnerable residents and the informal sector, the new health insurance plans would address the needs of salaried workers and employers.

He also stressed that employers must consider workers’ healthcare a necessary cost of doing business, just as they made provisions for pensions and other employment-related obligations.

On emergency medical care, the statement said the governor emphasised that no healthcare provider should turn away residents requiring emergency medical attention because of financial constraints, stressing that patients must first be stabilised before issues relating to payment or insurance coverage were addressed.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that 21 health maintenance organisations had endorsed participation in the new plans, describing the arrangement as a partnership between the government and private operators to expand coverage and strengthen healthcare delivery.

He also urged medical professionals considering emigration to reconsider, arguing that improved healthcare financing could strengthen the sector and make it more sustainable for practitioners.

Speaking at the event, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said advances in medical technology, including artificial intelligence, robotic science and modern diagnostic equipment, had significantly increased healthcare delivery costs.

He also emphasised the importance of a strong and inclusive health insurance system to protect residents from rising medical expenses while ensuring access to quality healthcare services.

Abayomi described the launch as a major shift in healthcare financing, arguing that the current dependence on out-of-pocket payments placed excessive financial pressure on households and healthcare facilities.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Lagos State Health Management Agency, Dr Adebayo Adedewe, said the state government had increased its Health Equity Fund from N1bn to N3bn to provide health insurance coverage for more than 500,000 vulnerable residents who could not afford the required premiums.

He said LASHMA would continue to expand enrolment, strengthen public awareness and ensure that the new policy translated into accessible healthcare for residents.

Adedewe added that the agency had intensified community engagement through radio campaigns, billboards, digital advocacy and partnerships with traditional rulers, market associations, transport unions and other grassroots organisations.
