A 28-year-old school bus driver, Onome Ughagha, has been arrested by operatives of the Delta State Police Command for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old female student in Sapele.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect was arrested after reportedly demanding and collecting N503,000 in ransom from the student’s father.

The spokesperson for the command, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

According to the PPRO, the incident was reported at the Sapele Area Command on Tuesday by the victim’s father, who alleged that the suspect abducted his daughter while she was preparing to leave for school.

“The suspect subsequently contacted him (the father), demanded N503,000 and threatened to kill the minor if the ransom was not paid,” the police statement added.

The statement noted that following the payment, the victim was reportedly abandoned along Oton Road, Sapele, where she was reunited with her family in a traumatised condition, with indications of sexual assault.

Upon receipt of the report, the statement added that the operatives of the Sapele Area Command immediately commenced investigations, while the victim was taken to a medical facility for examination and treatment.

The school principal and vice-principal were invited for questioning, while efforts were intensified to apprehend the suspect, who had abandoned the school bus and fled, the police further stated.

However, acting on credible intelligence, the operatives subsequently traced the suspect to his hideout in the Ajimele area of Sapele, where he was arrested on Friday.

During preliminary interrogation, he reportedly confessed to his involvement in the crime.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Samuel Erale, has condemned the incident and reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting children from all forms of violence and exploitation.

The CP assured that “investigations will be thorough and that anyone found culpable will be brought to justice.”

The police boss further called on school authorities, parents and transport operators to “exercise greater vigilance in safeguarding children,” stressing that the safety of every child entrusted to their care must remain paramount.

SEE FULL LIST: FBI says six most-wanted fraudsters captured, $17bn seized

Published

on

The Director of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kash Patel, says six of the bureau’s most-wanted fraudsters have been captured across four continents, while its global crackdown on scam networks has resulted in the seizure of about $17bn.

Patel disclosed this in separate posts on his official X account on Sunday, highlighting the reported achievements of the FBI’s international fugitive-hunting efforts and Operation Blackout, its campaign against global scam centres.

According to Patel, the “six fugitives collectively spent more than 4,000 days on the run,” while fraud cases linked to the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters list involved more than $2bn.

He said the suspects had believed that fleeing the United States and hiding abroad would put them beyond the reach of American law enforcement.

“They were wrong,” Patel wrote, adding that the FBI and its international partners would continue pursuing people accused of defrauding Americans, regardless of where they were hiding.

In a separate update on Operation Blackout, Patel said the campaign had resulted in the seizure of nearly $17bn, the arrest of hundreds of alleged scammers and the freeing of thousands of trafficked workers.

He added that more than 10,000 Americans had been warned before losing their money, helping to prevent an estimated $670m in financial losses.

“We’re not just investigating these criminal enterprises.

“We’re dismantling their networks, disrupting their finances, rescuing victims, and holding those responsible accountable,” he said.

Patel described the scam centres as criminal operations that exploit victims and target Americans through international fraud schemes.

He said the FBI would continue working with international partners to disrupt the networks and pursue those responsible.

“To every criminal organization targeting Americans: Justice will find you,” he added.

The wider operation has also involved raids on suspected scam centres, the disruption of online infrastructure used for fraud and efforts to identify people trafficked into working for criminal networks.

Based on Patel’s provision, here are the six names listed:

1. Manjit Singh Bedi

2. Elaine Agene Esco

3. Khalid Ahmed Satary

4. Herbert Leon Kimble

5. Sahid Abdullahi Ereg

6. Emylee Thai

PHOTOS: South African woman, US-based grandma arrested with large cocaine, loud shipments

Published

on

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 34-year-old South African woman, Qhina Beauty, with 36.65 kilograms of cocaine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, and a 62-year-old Nigerian-American grandmother, Anetor Gloria Ubong, with 9.45kg of high-grade cannabis, loud, imported from the United States.

A statement from Femi Babafemi, spokesperson of the anti-drug agency, says Qhina was arrested at the departure hall of the Lagos airport on October 7 while trying to board a Qatar Airways flight to South Africa via Doha. A search of her two travelling bags led to the recovery of 30 blocks of cocaine weighing 36.65kg, laced with dried pepper, wrapped in cello tape and packed into seven separate parcels.

During her interview, Qhina told operatives she arrived in Nigeria on 30th September specifically to pick up the consignment. She said she was recruited by another South African lady, who promised her R20,000 on successful delivery. She claimed she was introduced to two other members of the syndicate: one based in the United States and the other a Lagos-based car dealer.

Investigations later led to the arrest, on 14th October, of the 46-year-old car dealer Uchenna Victor Umunnakwe, who was intercepted at Apple Junction, Ago Palace Way, Lagos, after days of surveillance at his Shasha residence. He admitted receiving Qhina at the airport, lodging her at Santiago Hotel in Amuwo-Odofin, and later moving her to Cynarisso Hotel near the airport, ahead of her departure.

In another interdiction operation at the Lagos airport, NDLEA officers on Wednesday, 21st October, arrested a 62-year-old grandma Anetor Gloria Ubong, a realtor based in Richmond, Texas, who holds both Nigerian and US passports. Authorities arrested her after she arrived on a United Airlines flight from Houston. A search of her two checked-in boxes uncovered 18 parcels of loud, a synthetic cannabis weighing 9.45kg, concealed with gift wrapping paper in a box. She claimed her daughter and the daughter’s future brother-in-law delivered the box to her home in the US for onward delivery in Nigeria to her daughter’s fiancé, Jibola
