Lagos policemen treated us like criminals, says tech worker

Published

on

A Lagos-based tech expert, Caleb Okechukwu, has accused policemen attached to the Orile Police Division of abducting him and his friend, Christopher Onyejekwe, on their way back home from their business place.

Okechukwu, who narrated his ordeal in a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday, titled “How Orile Police Division, Lagos, Kidnapped Me and My Friend”, claimed that the incident occurred on Sunday, November 2, 2025.

He stated that he and his friend were heading home when a Sienna bus double-crossed them in the process.

According to him, armed policemen suddenly emerged from the vehicle in what he described as a “commando style” and bundled them into the vehicle without any explanation.

Okechukwu added that the officers also assaulted him in the vehicle while attempting to seize his phone from him.

He also accused the policemen of abducting some other people in the same manner, while giving them no space to identify themselves.

The post partly read, “On November 2, 2025, while rounding off my engagements in the ever-busy city of Lagos, I and my friend, Humble Chris, headed to retire for the day. Having alighted the booked rider, we walked to connect to the street. While on that, a Sienna bus double-crossed us in a commando style. Christopher Onyejekwe and I maintained calm while holding our belongings tightly.

“Before we could say a word, the men forced us into their Sienna bus without allowing us to identify who we are. These men were well armed with AK-47 rifles with 3 extra magazines each. While they drove us, I asked them who they were; one of them said harshly, “When you get to where we are going, this your English won’t save you.

“They seized my friend’s phone. Immediately, the phone rang while the other man, believed to be in his late 50s, wanted to forcefully take my phone, which faced resistance from me, and he gave me an uppercut on my jaw before I succumbed to his use of force. These men drove and got some other people kidnapped in such a commando style, while giving them no space to identify themselves. Some of the victims were strongly brutalised, while some were given blown eyes and physical injuries.”

Okechukwu alleged that the men eventually drove them to the Orile Police Station, seized their phones, and detained them overnight without interrogation.

While he further likened their operation to that of kidnappers demanding ransom, the victim said the officers released their phones to them the next morning and asked them to call their relatives to come forward to bail them.

He, however, identified two of the officers they encountered at the station as Mary Abimbola and one Kally, while accusing them of unprofessional conduct.

“When we were brought into the station that night, it was Inspector Mary Abimbola who wrote our names, and in the morning, it became so obvious that she is everything a good police officer should NEVER be; her conduct was rude even to the elderly.

“Another officer who accused me of trying to be the smart one is Kally, believed to be an inspector. He is fair, slim, inhumane, and unprofessional. He slaps at anyone at will. Very wicked man that has children. He attacked even the people who came for my friend and me,” he stated.

Okechukwu said it took the intervention of traders and community leaders from the Oduade Market before they were eventually released, adding that the incident caused significant financial loss to their businesses.

Onyejekwe, who confirmed the development while sharing the post on his Facebook wall, wrote, “How my friend Caleb Okechukwu and I were kidnapped by Orile Igamnu police division in Lagos.”

When contacted, the state police command spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said efforts were ongoing to identify the officers.

“Efforts are currently underway to identify the officers. We will communicate the outcome of the investigation to you.”

The alleged abduction comes amid growing public criticism of police misconduct in the state, with several residents in recent times accusing operatives of harassment, extortion, and illegal detention, especially at night patrol points.

PUNCH Metro reported in September that a student, Olawale Ayomide, accused officers attached to the Igbeba Police Station in the Ijebu Ode area of Ogun State of extorting N99,000 from him.

The victim, who narrated his ordeal to PUNCH Metro, said one of the officers forgot his official cap in his vehicle after allegedly perpetrating the act.

According to Olawale, the policemen stopped him while he was travelling in his mother’s vehicle from Sagamu to Ijebu-Ode and accused him of driving a car without a number plate.

He said that despite explaining that the car belonged to his mother, who was still processing the registration documents, the officers ignored him and insisted he should follow them to their station.

NDLEA warns Nigerians against fake ‘medicinal cannabis’, arrests suspect

Published

on

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has issued a public alert over the circulation of illicit drugs being sold as medicinal cannabis.

The agency said credible intelligence led to the arrest of a 28-year-old suspect on November 1, 2025, at 2 Akala Street, Idi Oro, Mushin, Lagos.

A statement released on Wednesday by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said Salisu was allegedly packaging and distributing synthetic and high-potency cannabis strains in designer pouches and cups labelled as medicinal cannabis.

He said 16.4 kilograms of substances, including strains identified as Colorado, Arizona, Canadian Loud and Ghana Loud, were recovered from the location.

“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has alerted the Nigerian public about the circulation of dangerous illicit substances being falsely packaged and marketed to the public as medicinal cannabis.

“The public alert comes on the heels of credible intelligence, which led to the arrest of a 28-year-old drug kingpin Afeez Salisu (a.k.a Malu) on Saturday 1st November 2025 at his 2 Akala Street, off Umoru Street, Idi Oro, Mushin-Lagos enclave from where he was packaging and distributing the fake medicinal cannabis in designer pouches and cups.

“A total of 16.4 kilograms of dangerous and synthetic strains of cannabis, including Colorado, Arizona, Canadian Loud and Ghana Loud packaged in designer pouches and cups labelled as medicinal cannabis, were recovered from his store, ” the statement partly read.

He warned that the seized products, marketed as medicinal cannabis, were instead dangerous and highly potent psychoactive substances.

Babafemi said, “The Agency therefore wishes to warn Nigerians, especially the youth, that these so-called medicinal products are, in reality, adulterated and highly potent strains of dangerous psychoactive substances, and are not the regulated, safe pharmaceutical preparations they are purported to be.

“Investigations by the Agency have confirmed that the seized and recovered products being peddled under the guise of therapeutic cannabis contain dangerously high concentrations of illicit and harmful strains of cannabis, including Loud, known for its extreme potency and severe psychological effects; Arizona, a highly concentrated and destructive variant of cannabis; and Colorado, a potent, often synthetic, strain with devastating consequences on the user’s mental and physical health.

Rather than the purported medicinal cannabis in the designer pouches and cups, the strains are highly addictive and pose a significant, immediate threat to public health and safety because they are associated with severe mental health issues, including psychosis, acute anxiety, paranoia, and other long-term cognitive impairments, especially among young people.

NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), said the suspects were exploiting public interest in medicinal cannabis to sell illegal drugs.

He noted that cannabis remains prohibited in Nigeria.

” The criminal elements behind this deceit are only exploiting the global conversation around medicinal cannabis to push their illicit and life-destroying products into our communities. Cannabis remains a prohibited substance in Nigeria, and as such, any product being sold locally under the guise of ‘medicinal cannabis’ is not only fake, but also dangerous and illegal, ” Marwa was quoted as saying.

He urged Nigerians, particularly young people, not to be swayed by packaging or health claims and encouraged the public to report anyone involved in the distribution of such products to the nearest NDLEA office

“Please do not consume it, report any person or group involved in the illicit trade of these dangerous substances to the nearest NDLEA office”, he added.

The PUNCH reports that the NDLEA’s latest alert follows a pattern of arrests involving substances marketed as wellness or therapeutic products, even though no medicinal cannabis product has been approved for use or sale in Nigeria.

DSS Dismisses 115 Personnel, Warns Public Against Impostors

Published

on

The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced the dismissal of 115 of its personnel as part of what it described as an ongoing internal reform aimed at strengthening professionalism and integrity within the agency.

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday evening, the secret police said the decision followed a review of misconduct cases and disciplinary actions carried out over a period.

“As part of the ongoing reforms in the Department of State Services (DSS), the public is hereby informed that a total of 115 personnel have been dismissed over a period,” the statement read.

The agency further cautioned members of the public against dealing with individuals parading themselves as DSS operatives, warning that some of the dismissed officers were still posing as active personnel.

“In addition to earlier disclaimers on the duo of Barry Donald and Victor Onyedikachi Godwin, the Service finds it necessary to warn citizens of the fraudulent activities of some of these persons still posing as DSS personnel,” the statement continued.

The DSS advised Nigerians to exercise caution and verify the identities of anyone claiming to be an operative of the Service before engaging in any official or personal dealings.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to desist from any official dealing with these individuals who have been dismissed by the Service,” it warned.

For transparency, the agency said it had published the names of all affected officers on its official website — dss.gov.ng/media/more/4.

UK court jails Nigerian Chiemka Okoronta, a postgraduate student for rap!ng 17-year-old girl

Published

on

A Nigerian man, Chiemka Okoronta, has been jailed for rap!ng a stranded 17-year-old girl in Bradford, United Kingdom,

Okoronta and the teenage girl were on board a night bus service unexpectedly terminated in Morley, Leeds, with both requiring transport home to Bradford on 25 March.

He tricked her into sharing a taxi before luring her into his accommodation and attacking her in a locked toilet, Bradford Crown Court heard.

Okoronta, who was convicted of multiple r*pe offences, was told he was likely to be deported to Nigeria following his sentence.

Okoronta must also serve three years on extended licence and register as a s*x offender for the rest of his life.

The court heard the teenager’s phone d!ed after alighting the bus, with Okoronta offering to share a taxi to Bradford Interchange.

Prosecutor Graham O’Sullivan said the vehicle instead went to the defendant’s flat, with the teenager persuaded to go inside and subsequently locked inside a toilet.

Following the attack, the girl stopped a passer-by outside and used their phone to call police.

In a victim impact statement read out in court, the girl said: “This incident has turned my life upside down. I have flashbacks of what happened to me, I have nightmares – one minute I feel fine and the next minute it all comes back.”

Judge Sophie McKone told Okoronta: “I am satisfied that when you asked if she wanted to share your taxi to Bradford you formulated a plan that would get her back to your flat where you could r*pe her.

“You concocted a reason for her to come into your flat. You are, I am clear, a dangerous s3xual predator.”

Det Con Sue Sutcliffe, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “I would like to commend the victim in this case for her immense bravery in coming forward straight away to report this horrific crime.

“I would urge anyone who has been the victim of a s3xual offence, to please report it to us so we can take action.”
