The National Universities Commission has approved 34 undergraduate programmes for the newly established Federal University of Science and Technology (FUSTECH), Epe, Lagos State.

The approval, conveyed in a letter dated October 23, 2026 and signed on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, followed a resource verification exercise conducted by panels of experts to assess the human and material resources available for the proposed programmes.

According to a statement made available to The PUNCH, on Monday, the approved programmes will be offered on a full-time basis at the university’s take-off campuses, effective from the 2026/2027 academic session.

LASU and FUSTECH had noted that the arrangement would continue temporarily pending FUSTECH’s relocation to its permanent site.

A 26-year-old Nigerian student who was preparing to celebrate his birthday suddenly passed away in London, United Kingdom after suffering an asthma attack while his friends helplessly watched on.

Obanyeli Jesse Chima had recently finished his studies and was set to celebrate his birthday with his friends, MyLondon reported on October 2026.

On Saturday, September 19, 2026, Chima was meeting up with his friend Eva and her partner to celebrate their birthdays together.

As he was waiting in the lounge, Chima told his friend he needed to go outside for some air because he was having an asthma attack.

His friend called an ambulance, yet while his friend was on the phone with the operator, he collapsed.

As he was waiting in the lounge, Chima told his friend he needed to go outside for some air because he was having an asthma attack.

Eva told MyLondon: “Our friend started CPR after being guided by the ambulance operators. Multiple ambulances came, and they spent around two hours working on him to stabilise his heart. They finally got him to the hospital and told us he’s on life support. They said he might only have memory loss, but he will be fine.”

“Two days later, they said he’s not getting better. There was no improvement. They eventually did a brain test on him and confirmed that he was brain-dead. On September 25, we lost him. It’s horrible because we were just laughing, and four days later, we had to see his lifeless body.

“The weekend he suffered was the only weekend we all had free – all our birthdays are in September. He, my partner, and I all have our birthdays one day after another. That weekend was our chance to hang out, but instead we ended up at the hospital.”

Chima had only recently completed his master’s degree in Public Health and was awaiting graduation.

“His family had saved money for his graduation, and now that money needs to be used to bury their child. It’s horrible”, Eva continued.

Chima and Eva became friends because they had both left Nigeria to study in London.

Chima had worked at Chelsea Football Club, the team he supported, and Eva described him as a ‘beloved and cherished friend who was the life of the party.”

Friends are now trying to raise enough money to transport his body to Nigeria do his family can finally lay him to rest.

A GoFundMe account was set up by Eva, to raise £9,000 for repatriating his body to Nigeria.

“Our £9,000 target will help cover the necessary arrangements and transportation to return Jesses body to Nigeria for burial. The money raise will be given to Jesse’s father to help pay for these arrangements,” the statement partly read.

“Your contribution will bring us closer to bring Jesse home and ease the financial burden on his family.”

So-Safe Corps busts students’ hideout, intercepts seven during school hours

Published

on

The Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, So-Safe Corps, has intercepted seven students during a routine patrol in Obantoko, Abeokuta.

The students, five females of Nawairudeen Secondary School, Obantoko, and two males said to be school dropouts, were found in a room within Agogo Ide Community Development Association, CDA, area.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Corps’ Director of Information and Public Relations, ACC Adegunwa Adegbuyi, on behalf of the State Commander, Commander (Dr) Soji Ganzallo on Saturday.

Adegbuyi said the incident occurred on Thursday, at about 10:00 a.m., when a team of operatives from the Area Command led by ACC Babatunde Ogunseye encountered the seven individuals during patrol.

According to him, the five female students (name withheld) are in SS2 while the two male students had reportedly dropped out of school.

Following the encounter, all seven were taken to the school principal for appropriate attention and further action.

The principal, who appreciated the Corps for its vigilance, assembled the students before their schoolmates and asked the Area Commander to address them on discipline and responsible conduct.

Addressing the students, Ogunseye counselled them to remain focused on their studies, uphold good moral values and shun activities that could jeopardise their future.

He particularly warned them against loitering around Agogo Ide CDA and other locations that could expose them to security risks or inappropriate conduct during school hours.

He emphasized the importance of parental guidance, school discipline and community cooperation in protecting young people.

The State Commander reaffirmed the commitment of the Corps to community safety, youth protection and crime prevention, and urged parents, guardians, school authorities and community leaders to work together to guide young people towards responsible behaviour.

Student loans voluntary, not compulsory for tertiary students — NELFUND

Published

on

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has said that accessing student loans is voluntary, urging tertiary institution students to apply only when they genuinely need financial assistance to pursue their education.

The clarification was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Strategic Communications, NELFUND, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, in Abuja on Wednesday.

The fund explained that the student loan scheme was established to remove, “financial barriers to higher education and ensure that eligible Nigerian students were not denied educational opportunities because of financial constraints.”

It stressed that students who could afford their educational expenses were under no obligation to apply for or access the facility.

NELFUND said making the loans compulsory for all students, irrespective of their financial circumstances, would contradict the purpose of the scheme, which is to support those who need financial assistance rather than encourage indiscriminate borrowing.

“The student loan scheme is a support mechanism, not an obligation,” the fund stated.

It urged tertiary institutions, student leaders and other stakeholders to provide accurate information about the scheme and guide students who require financial support on how to access it.

The fund added that the facility was interest-free and intended to help beneficiaries overcome financial difficulties associated with pursuing higher education.

However, it cautioned prospective applicants that the loans came with repayment obligations in line with the provisions of the Student Loans Act, advising students to understand the terms and conditions before applying.

NELFUND maintained that its objective was to ensure that financial hardship did not prevent eligible Nigerian students from pursuing their educational aspirations.

The scheme is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to expand access to tertiary education by providing financial assistance to students who may struggle to meet the costs of their studies.

While the interest-free arrangement reduces the cost of borrowing, the fund’s latest clarification underscores the importance of ensuring that students understand that the facility is optional and that beneficiaries are expected to fulfil the applicable repayment requirements.
