Barely two weeks after operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, also known as KAI, rescued four nursing mothers and their children from a dumpsite along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, another five-month-old baby girl and her mother have been rescued from a canal along the same expressway.

PUNCH Metro gathered in a telephone conversation with the spokesperson for the agency, Lukman Ajayi, on Wednesday that the operatives found the duo while carrying out routine clearance operations in the Abule-Ado area of the expressway.

According to Ajayi, the mother could not explain the circumstances that brought them to the canal, while the child was found in a poor state of health.

He noted that the operatives, who were concerned about the safety of both mother and daughter, immediately rescued them and took them to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Ajayi said, “Today, our operatives rescued a mother and her five-month-old baby girl from a canal at Abule-Ado during routine clearance operations on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

“The mother could not give a satisfactory answer as to why they were there, and she only said she was running from her husband, who lived in FESTAC.

“Both the mother and the child have been taken to the hospital. The child was not in a good state of health when they were rescued.”

The latest incident has again drawn attention to the vulnerability of mothers and young children found living or seeking refuge in unsafe environments along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, with previous rescues by KAI highlighting concerns about sanitation, child welfare and access to necessities.

The repeated discoveries also underscore the need for agencies responsible for environmental enforcement and social welfare to work together to identify vulnerable families and provide them with appropriate shelter, healthcare and other support rather than leaving them exposed to hazardous environments.

PUNCH Metro reported on August 12 that the agency rescued four nursing mothers and their babies from an illegal dumpsite at Agboju along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.

According to a statement on the agency’s X page, one of the babies rescued was only nine days old and had been living in an environment characterised by filth, poor air quality and inadequate access to necessities.

The agency had also identified the rescued women as Fareedat Muyideen, 23, from Kwara State, with her two-year-old child; Ayomide Ayomoke, 25, from Ondo State, with her 10-month-old baby; Amanda Oziema Abalihi, 20, from Anambra State, with her nine-day-old baby; and Chisom Ugo, 24, from Imo State, with her 11-month-old child.

The wife of embattled Delta State content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as Odogwu of Asaba, has defended her husband against allegations that he raped 20-year-old Favour Agbro, saying he only had an affair with the deceased.

The woman, whose name was not stated, made the claim in a video uploaded on the content creator’s page on Wednesday, while insisting that she would continue to stand by her husband.

The Delta State Police Command had arrested Ogbonna, 40, in connection with the alleged rape of Favour, who later died after ingesting a toxic substance.

The police said the suspect allegedly invited Favour to Asaba under the guise of teaching her content creation and subsequently took her to a hotel, where he allegedly raped and physically assaulted her.

But speaking in the video, Ogbonna’s wife rejected the rape allegation, saying, “Odogwu Asaba did not kill anybody. I know my husband…. Odogwu Asaba did not rape Favour. Odogwu Asaba only had an affair with the girl.”

She added, “He cannot rape, he has never. Even when he did not have fame, he did not rape anybody, is it now?”

The woman said she had been following developments surrounding the case and had chosen to speak after learning more about the matter.

“I am trying to follow the matter the right way; I have not been silent. I want to let you people know that no matter what happened, he is my husband and I stand with him 100%. I’m not going to turn my back on him,” she said.

She also urged people not to treat social media discussions as a substitute for the legal process.

“How I feel, what I feel, how I see it is my personal decision. Everything is not actually the way they presented it. Before I could come out to talk, I have learnt a lot about this matter. Social media is not a courtroom. You people should bear that in mind,” she said.

The woman further acknowledged Favour’s death, saying it was the reason she had approached the matter cautiously.

“Yes, someone has died and that is why we are taking it easy. But Odogwu Asaba did not kill anybody,” she said.

She also said Ogbonna would have the opportunity to give his own account of what happened when he returns.

The woman said she had been married to Ogbonna for eight years and that they had four children together.

The police had earlier said Favour travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after Ogbonna allegedly offered to train her on how to monetise her TikTok and Facebook pages through content creation.

According to the police, Favour later returned home distressed and narrated the alleged incident to her parents before recording a video about her ordeal.

She subsequently ingested a toxic substance and died while receiving treatment.

The police said the arrest followed a petition by the deceased’s family and that investigations were ongoing.

The command later said Ogbonna would be charged to court.

Ogbonna has not been convicted of any offence, and the rape allegation remains subject to investigation and determination through the appropriate legal process.
