2027: MURIC seeks religious balance, urges Ogun Christians to support Muslim candidate

Published

on

Ogun State chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged Christian leaders to back a Muslim candidate for governor in 2027, citing fairness and equity.

They argued that it’s time for a religious balance in leadership, given the state’s Christian governor currently.

According to them, since the creation of the state in 1976, Muslim civilian governors have only ruled for eight years, while Christian governors will have held office for 26 years by the end of Abiodun’s tenure.

The group raised the concern in a statement signed by MURIC Ogun State Chairman, Tajudeen Alao, and the Secretary, Olaleye Damilare on Wednesday.

They recalled the role Christian leaders played in the 2019 governorship election, saying “We vividly recall that Christian leadership in Ogun State urged the Muslim electorate to vote for Prince Dapo Abiodun, a Christian, despite the outgoing governor, Ibikunle Amosun, being a Muslim.

“Their call was rooted in fairness and sensitivity to the principle of religious inclusiveness.

“Since Ogun State’s creation in 1976, Muslim civilian governors have only ruled for eight years, while Christian governors will have held office for 26 years by the end of Abiodun’s tenure.

“By 2027, should 26 years wait for eight, or eight years wait for 26? Would it not be anomalous for Christians to extend their 26-year rule with another eight years while Muslims remain at just eight years of leadership?” It asked.

According to MURIC, a large number of Muslims backed Abiodun in good faith and now want Christian leaders to support a Muslim candidate in the upcoming election in return.

“Justice and equity demand that Christians support a Muslim candidate for the next governorship to restore balance and inclusivity,” the statement added.

The group emphasised that its call was “without malice,” characterising it as Christlike and intended to advance inclusivity, love, and harmony.

They insisted that supporting a Muslim candidate would ensure fairness, uphold religious equity, and prevent an imbalance in the political leadership of Ogun State.

Natasha begins re-election campaign in Kogi ahead of 2027 elections

Published

on

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on Sunday commenced her re-election campaign across Kogi Central ahead of the February 6, 2027 senatorial election, with her supporters and Peoples Democratic Party candidates joining the campaign engagements.

The campaign featured roadside receptions across communities in Okene and other parts of the district, culminating in a gathering at the senator’s residence in Obeiba, Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area.

Her media aide, Mike Idoko, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

The campaign activities attracted party members, community leaders, political stakeholders and supporters, while PDP candidates contesting National Assembly and Kogi State House of Assembly seats in the district also participated.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, accompanied by her husband, Emmanuel Uduaghan, and other political associates, used the engagements to reaffirm her commitment to quality representation, constituency development, and legislative advocacy.

She said her relationship with the people of Kogi Central went beyond elections, adding that their support remained a source of motivation for her public service.

“My relationship with the people of Kogi Central goes beyond elections. These are my people, my family and the very reason I remain committed to public service. I do not need an election season to remember where I come from or who entrusted me with the responsibility of representing them.

“What we witnessed today is a reflection of the bond we have continued to build over time. I am deeply grateful to everyone who came out, not because they were compelled to do so, but because they believe in the journey we have undertaken together. Their love and confidence mean a great deal to me, and I will never take them for granted,” she said.

The senator also pledged to intensify efforts to attract infrastructure, economic opportunities and other development projects to the district, particularly the Ajaokuta area, whose development concerns she said required sustained attention.

She stressed that effective representation should go beyond occupying public office to include regular engagement with constituents, responsiveness to their needs and purposeful legislative interventions.

Among those who participated in the campaign were PDP candidates for the House of Representatives seats representing Adavi/Okehi, Ajaokuta and Okene/Ogori-Magongo Federal Constituencies, as well as the party’s candidates for the various Kogi State House of Assembly constituencies in Kogi Central.

Their participation provided an opportunity for party members and candidates to strengthen their cooperation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The statement said thousands of supporters gathered at the senator’s Ihima residence, with many remaining there late into the night.

Kogi Central comprises five local government areas: Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi, Okene and Ogori-Magongo.

Tinubu favoured to win in 2027, says Barau

Published

on

Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election, citing assessments by political analysts and the prevailing political situation in the country.

Barau spoke on Sunday at the inauguration of campaign committees for Dawakin Tofa, Tofa and Rimin Gado Local Government Areas in Kano State, where he urged All Progressives Congress members to unite and work towards victory for all the party’s candidates in the forthcoming general elections.
Barau, according to a statement by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, said the foundation laid by Tinubu during his first term would yield positive results in his second term.

“Based on the assessments of political analysts and the current state of Nigerian politics, all indications suggest that, by Allah’s grace, Bola Tinubu will win the presidential election,” he said.

Barau commended party leaders, elected representatives, local government chairmen, Governor Abba Yusuf and other stakeholders for their support for the APC, expressing confidence that the party’s unity and cooperation in Kano would be sustained.

He said Kano, which he described as one of the country’s largest states and second only to Lagos in the number of registered voters, deserved greater attention and development opportunities from the Federal Government.

The Deputy Senate President said Yusuf’s decision to move from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC was a strategic step that had enhanced Kano’s political relevance and improved its prospects of attracting development.

He added that the alignment of the governor, local government chairmen, councillors, state lawmakers and members of the National Assembly under the APC would help translate the party’s political strength into tangible benefits for the people.

Barau said the forthcoming elections would provide an opportunity for elected representatives to contribute more to the development of their constituencies.
He explained that the campaign committees were constituted to include party leaders, executive members, former and serving lawmakers, councillors, local government chairmen, new members and respected elders.

He urged the committee members to mobilise voters and campaign vigorously for the party ahead of the elections.
“What is required of you is to play your part actively in securing victory. Mobilise, campaign and ensure that all APC candidates emerge victorious from top to bottom. May Allah grant us success and enable us to achieve our goals,” he said.

Abure rejects Obi, considers Tinubu, Atiku ahead of 2027, read details

Published

on

The immediate past National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has declared his readiness to align with President Bola Tinubu or former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election, while ruling out support for the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi.

Abure, however, said his decision to support any candidate would depend on the outcome of a pending Supreme Court case involving the leadership of the Labour Party, his political interests and ideology, as well as the candidate’s acceptability.

He also vowed to mobilise his supporters against Obi, insisting that the former Anambra State governor had squandered the goodwill and political structure that contributed to his strong showing in the 2023 presidential election.

However, the NDC and Obi’s camp dismissed Abure’s position, saying they had moved on from the former LP chairman and were focused on the 2027 presidential contest.

In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, Abure said he would consult his supporters and decide on a preferred candidate if the Supreme Court failed to deliver its judgment before the end of November.

Asked which of the three leading presidential contenders he was willing to support, Abure said, “As for me, we are waiting for the Supreme Court to decide our case, and if the judgment is not coming before the end of this November, we will rationalise the offer of whoever wants our support.

“However, it must tally with our interest and ideology, and he must be a sellable candidate. Once these are settled, our faces will be everywhere. I am talking about the same faces that took Peter Obi everywhere in 2023.”

He added, “We are open to working with any of the major candidates, but as former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, said, ‘I know whom I will not hand over to. But I don’t know who I will hand over to.’ So, similarly, I am very sure that I wouldn’t support Peter Obi for the 2027 general election. But I am open to an alignment with others.”

Abure, who insisted that the NDC was not among the parties he would consider supporting because of Obi’s presence, said he was not yet negotiating with any presidential candidate.

“Yes, obviously the NDC is not included. I don’t see any reason to support Peter Obi again. I will not. And I am saying this with conviction and without any fear of contradiction. However, as of now, I am not in talks with any candidate yet. This is because it’s not just about me. It’s also about my followers and their interests,” he said.

The former LP chairman said his supporters remained loyal to the party structure he controlled, despite the defection of some members to other platforms.

He accused Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti of undermining the party’s leadership, alleging that the structure was dismantled from the ward to the national level.

“Right now, they are standing by the structure of the party, the same one Otti and the illegal leadership he forced on the Labour Party sacked from wards, states to national level. What these people did to this party was a big disservice. But we know that I was their target,” Abure said.

The dispute between Abure and Obi followed prolonged leadership crises in the Labour Party, including disagreements over the conduct of its national convention and control of its organisational structure.

While Abure accused Obi and Otti of worsening the crisis by establishing a parallel National Working Committee in Owerri, allies of the former LP presidential candidate argued that Abure breached an earlier agreement to conduct an inclusive convention beginning at the ward and state levels before the national convention.

The disagreement eventually widened the gap between Obi and the Abure-led faction, with Obi moving away from the Labour Party structure and pursuing a new political platform.

Abure argued that the crisis exposed Obi’s leadership shortcomings, questioning how the former governor could lead the country after failing to manage a political party.

“Obi’s behaviour in the Labour Party is now what people are using to assess if he can truly lead the country. This is because if you can’t lead a micro, there is no way you can lead a macro,” he said.

He also criticised Obi’s movement from the Labour Party towards the African Democratic Congress before joining the NDC, alleging that the former presidential candidate expected to reproduce the leadership struggle in his previous party.

Abure said Obi eventually left the ADC after realising he could not secure his desired political outcome there, adding that some of his supporters remained in the party while others followed him to the NDC.

On whether Obi would enjoy the freedom he had under his leadership, the former chairman said the situation in the NDC was different, arguing that its national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, remained firmly in control.

“No way! Let Obi compare the freedom and leverage he enjoyed under our leadership to what he is experiencing in the NDC; he already knows the difference. You can see that Senator Dickson is fully in charge and he’s not giving up the party’s leadership,” he said.

Abure added that Dickson had learnt from the Labour Party crisis and was determined to prevent a similar situation in the NDC.

Asked to assess Obi’s chances in the 2027 election, Abure predicted that the former governor would perform below his 2023 showing.

“Let me say clearly that Obi will not record the successes he recorded in the 2023 general election. That is because he has squandered his goodwill, human capital, resources, and mismanaged all the gains he had in 2023,” he said.

Abure claimed that Obi’s departure from the Labour Party had cost him the organisational structure and campaign machinery that helped him secure more than six million votes in the last presidential election.

Reacting, the spokesperson for the NDC Presidential Campaign Council, Constance Ikokwu, dismissed Abure’s position, saying the party was concentrating on issues of national importance.

Ikokwu told The PUNCH that Obi was focused on his campaign and efforts to secure victory in 2027.

She said, “Mr Peter Obi is fully occupied with the campaign trail, focused on the important task of leading a national effort towards the 2027 presidential contest, an election that offers Nigerians an opportunity to rescue the country and change its direction.

“In the light of that, all we can say is good luck to Mr Julius Abure in his new ventures.”

Similarly, Obi’s media aide, Idris Zekeri, said the former LP chairman was no longer relevant to the campaign’s immediate priorities.

“We no longer talk about Abure. We have moved on from them. We have an election less than 70 days away, and then we are campaigning,” Zekeri said.

He called on Nigerians who believed in equity, justice, fairness, capacity, compassion and competence to support Obi, whom he described as the most qualified candidate to move the country forward.

Zekeri, however, acknowledged that not every Nigerian would support Obi, describing such differences as part of the democratic process.

He said Abure’s decision not to support Obi was driven by personal grievances rather than the national interest.

“The individual you mentioned (Abure) has now said he doesn’t want to support Obi, and his reason for that was that he has an axe to grind. I think he should be asking himself why he should place his personal sentiment and belief above national interest. But that is up to him.

“However, we are not discussing him. He is not critical to what we are doing at this time,” he added.
