El-Rufai may miss ADC presidential primary, see why

Published

on

A Kaduna State High Court on Tuesday ordered that former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, pending a ruling on his bail application.

The trial judge, Darius Khobo, fixed the first week of June for ruling after listening to arguments from both the prosecution and the defence on the bail request.

With the development, the former governor may not participate in the activities leading to the presidential, governorship and National Assembly primaries of the African Democratic Congress.

By the Independent National Electoral Commission timetable, party primaries are to commence on April 23, 2026 and end by May 30, 2026.

The ADC has yet to fix a date for its presidential primary, as the David Mark-led faction and the Nafiu Bala-led faction battle at the Supreme Court over the party’s authentic leadership.

The apex court fixed today (Wednesday) for the hearing of an appeal arising from the leadership crisis in the ADC.

El-Rufai is standing trial on an amended nine-count charge bordering on alleged fraud, abuse of office and corruption.

The anti-graft agency had earlier amended the charge, leaving the former governor as the sole defendant before the Kaduna State High Court.

A Federal High Court earlier granted the former governor N200m bail, with additional conditions.

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, proceedings were dominated by arguments on the defendant’s application for bail.

Counsel for the ICPC opposed the application, arguing that granting bail could undermine ongoing investigations, alleging that the defendant might interfere with witnesses or evidence.

However, the court declined to deliver an immediate ruling, instead ordering that El-Rufai be remanded in ICPC custody pending its decision.

Reacting, counsel for the defendant, Ubong Akpan, faulted the court’s position, describing it as unjustified and suggestive of deeper concerns.

He argued that the refusal to grant bail appeared to be premised on the assumption that his client’s status as a former governor could enable him to tamper with investigations.

“The court, in its wisdom, decided that because Nasir El-Rufai is a former governor, he is going to interfere with the investigation. Therefore, he is not entitled to bail in an allegation of financial impropriety. We respectfully disagree,” he said.

Akpan stated that the defence team would review the ruling and take appropriate legal steps to challenge it.

“The next step is to take the legal steps required to challenge it. We will respond through the proper legal process. That is what the law requires,” he added.

The defence lawyer further maintained that the case had political undertones, but stressed that the team would remain guided by the rule of law.

“From the beginning, everything about Nasir El-Rufai’s travails has always been political. This is mainly the legal arm of it,” he said.

He also urged supporters of the former governor to remain calm and law-abiding.

“Don’t allow fear to take over. Don’t act as if something fatal has happened. Nobody has died.

“In a conflict, you have gains and setbacks. Sometimes things work against you, but you must not be frightened. Sit up. We are going to take this battle on, and we are going to win,” he said.

The matter was adjourned to the first week of June for ruling on the bail application and continuation of proceedings.

El-Rufai, who returned to the country from Cairo, Egypt, on February 12, 2026.

Following his arrival, he has been involved in multiple legal proceedings, including investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and subsequently the ICPC, and the Department of State Service.

2027: No presidential candidate including Peter Obi can improve Nigeria – Datti Baba-Ahmed

Published

on

Former Labour Party, LP, presidential running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has disclosed that none of the candidates running for the presidency in 2027 can improve Nigeria.

Datti expressed this opinion during an interview on Mic On Podcast.

Making reference to his former principal, Peter Obi, Datti said the now NDC presidential candidate left his comfort zone when he abandoned the Labour Party.

He said: “None of the people contesting will improve Nigeria, including Peter Obi. Peter Obi left his comfort zone; he was adopted as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party as far back as 2024.

“When he was going to join ADC, I had to go to Yar’Adua Centre ahead of him, called him aside, and they were worried: why is Datti calling Obi aside?

“I told him that this is the last time that I’m coming to this place, but I want to tell you that this is not a place for you. Was I proven wrong? I was proven right, and within four months, Obi left ADC.

“I don’t like people who contradict themselves, and I don’t want to go into criticising the politics of Atiku because that’s not what I’m about.”

2027: They’re looking for any means to eliminate Peter Obi, Atiku – Primate Ayodele

Published

on

The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has alleged that some unnamed persons are looking for any means to eliminate former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

In a video posted on X, Ayodele warned the two politicians to be conscious of their security.

While he did not name those he alleged were plotting to eliminate Obi and Atiku, the cleric said God would not allow it to happen.

“Obi and Atiku, be very conscious of your security. They are looking for any means to eliminate Obi and Atiku.

“But God will never allow it to happen. Watch out and be cautious of your security,” he warned.

It was reports that while Atiku is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Peter Obi is the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, ahead of the 2027 polls.

The cleric also urged President Bola Tinubu not to visit the United States, alleging that America was after his downfall.

Atiku decries economic hardship driving youth to sell kidneys

Published

on

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised alarm over what he described as a growing trend of young Nigerians selling their kidneys to survive amid the country’s cost-of-living crisis, blaming President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies for the development.

The Africa Democratic Congress presidential candidate, in a post on X on Thursday, said he had heard “disturbing stories” of young Nigerians resorting to selling body organs, particularly kidneys, in desperate attempts to raise money.

“I have heard disturbing stories about the extent to which young Nigerians are being driven simply to survive. Perhaps the most horrifying are the growing reports of young people selling parts of their bodies: kidneys in particular, in desperate attempts to raise money,” Atiku wrote.

He said young Nigerians ought to be “selling dreams, ideas and innovation, not their body organs,” adding that the trend should “offend the conscience of every Nigerian.”

Atiku claimed that young Nigerians were reportedly being driven to sell their kidneys for as little as ₦1.7m, a figure he did not attribute to any specific report or agency.

PUNCH could not independently verify the figure as of the time of this report.

The former Vice President linked the trend to the rising cost of living under the Tinubu administration, listing food, transport, rent, school fees, medicine and electricity as items that have become increasingly unaffordable for ordinary Nigerians.

He said, “In Tinubu’s Nigeria, almost everything required to live with dignity is becoming more expensive by the day: food, transport, rent, school fees, medicine and electricity.

“Yet young Nigerians are reportedly being driven to sell their kidneys for as little as ₦1.7 million.

“That should break the heart of a nation.

“Young Nigerians should be building careers, starting businesses, raising families and pursuing their dreams, not calculating how much parts of their bodies can fetch simply to stay alive.

“When young Nigerians begin to see their kidneys as emergency savings, we are no longer talking about ordinary economic hardship. We are talking about desperation at its most frightening.”

Atiku acknowledged that Nigeria already has laws prohibiting commercial organ sales and organ trafficking, but argued that “laws alone cannot cure the poverty and desperation that make vulnerable young people easy prey for criminal networks.”

He called for economic reforms with “a human face,” including affordable food, cheaper transportation, accessible healthcare, decent jobs and “renewed hope for the next generation.”

The former Vice President capped the statement with a direct jab at the President: “Tinubu made Nigeria expensive. I will make Nigeria affordable again.”

Atiku’s remarks come amid a spate of reports and unverified claims about organ trafficking in parts of the country in recent weeks.

The Nigeria Police Force recently paraded four suspects, including two nephrologists, over the alleged operation. Police said one of the suspects, Emmanuel Ode, allegedly admitted to recruiting victims and disclosed that a 22-year-old man had been lured to a hospital in Abuja in April, where his kidney was allegedly harvested for $1,250, equivalent to about N1.7m.

Investigators said the alleged syndicate targeted vulnerable and financially desperate young people in Nasarawa and neighbouring areas.
