Democracy Day: Analysts give verdict on Tinubu’s handling of insecurity

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day today, political analysts have expressed differing views on the current state of insecurity across the country.

In recent months, national discourse on insecurity has dominated both traditional and social media platforms, raising concerns about the security situation and its potential impact on President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing re-election in 2027.

A political analyst, Kabiru Ojo, has criticised the state of security in Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the situation has worsened over the past three years.

Ojo revealed this in an exclusive interview .

He said insecurity, which was previously concentrated in a few states, has now spread across the country.

“I will say the security situation in Nigeria has gone from bad to worse. It is getting worse day by day,” he said.

He explained that before the current administration, kidnapping and banditry were mostly limited to states like Zamfara and parts of the North-East, but have now spread to many parts of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory.

“Before Tinubu took over, these issues were mostly in some states like Zamfara and Maiduguri, but now it has spread to all regions. It has even entered Abuja,” he said.

He cited recent incidents, including the reported abduction of a student on the way to write WAEC examinations in Abuja, as well as similar cases in Kogi and Kwara states.

“Just recently, a student going to write WAEC in Abuja was abducted. The same thing happened in Kogi. Kwara used to be peaceful, but now there are abductions and killings,” he said.

Ojo also said rural communities have been badly affected, with many residents forced to flee their homes due to fear of attacks.

“Rural communities are not safe. People are running away from their homes because of bandits. Attacks are happening frequently, and nobody is being caught,” he said.

He accused the government of failing to take decisive action, claiming that citizens are increasingly being left to protect themselves.

“People are now being advised to defend themselves. Even clerics and ordinary citizens are telling people to protect themselves because the government is not doing enough,” he said.

Matawalle appointment first indicator Tinubu not ready to tackle insecurity

While criticizing President Tinubu’s approach to tackling insecurity, Ojo said the appointment of former Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle as the state minister of defense, has raised serious doubts about the government’s commitment to addressing the crisis.

He argued that the decision sends a wrong signal at a time Nigerians are facing widespread kidnappings and banditry.

“Appointing Matawalle raises doubts about the fight against insecurity,” he said.

He questioned the rationale behind the appointment.

He noted that Matawalle’s tenure as governor of Zamfara State was widely associated with insecurity challenges, which eventually led to his defeat at the polls.

“Zamfara was one of the worst-hit states during his time, and the people voted him out because of insecurity,” he said.

Ojo argued that bringing him into a key security role shows that the government may not be serious about resolving the insecurity it inherited.

“This shows that Tinubu is not ready to solve the insecurity he inherited,” he said.

He further referenced the Obasanjo-Atiku era, claiming that firm directives were once given to security agencies to tackle emerging threats quickly.

“Atiku told Obasanjo that when Boko Haram was emerging, there was a clear instruction to security agencies to act within a time frame and eliminate the threat,” he said.

Ojo added that he had also heard similar suggestions being made in the current national discourse, including from religious leaders.

“Even Pastor Adeboye made similar suggestions that government should give a 90-day ultimatum to dislodge bandits and insurgents,” he said.

He, however, lamented that such proposals are not being implemented under the current administration, which he believes has not shown enough urgency.

“But Mr President will not listen because of politics and interest,” he said

Ojo also accused the government of focusing more on political survival than on security reforms, suggesting that more urgency is being placed on politics than on protecting lives.

“If the same energy being used for politics is used to tackle insecurity, Nigeria would be safer,” he said.

He rated the government low on security performance, insisting that the current approach has failed to produce meaningful results.

“If I am to score them on security, I will give them 2 out of 10. It is a complete failure,” he added.

Ojo expressed deep concern that the security situation in Nigeria may not see any major improvement before the end of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure.

He said that although the government may attempt to reduce attacks, the scale of the crisis has already gone beyond quick fixes.

“Before the end of Tinubu’s administration, he will try to do his best to reduce insecurity, but I need to be sincere with you, the damage has been done,” he said.

“The insecurity in Nigeria has gone viral to a different dimension,” he added.

He argued that kidnapping and banditry have now become more organised and financially driven, making the problem even more difficult to eliminate.

“They have made it a lucrative business,” he said.

While acknowledging that some efforts may be made, he insisted that the impact would not be significant enough to fully restore peace before the end of the current administration.

Tinubu era seeing quicker hostage recoveries – Keshinro

Another activist, Muhammad B. Keshinro, said that while insecurity remains a major challenge in Nigeria, there has been a noticeable improvement in the speed of rescue operations under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Keshinro revealed this in an exclusive interview .

He said that although insecurity has not been completely eliminated, it has been considerably contained compared to previous years.

“After three years in office, insecurity has been considerably contained, not erased,” he said.

He explained that his assessment is based on the speed at which security forces now respond to high-profile kidnapping cases, noting that several victims have been rescued faster than in the past.

“The comparison I’m making is specifically about high-profile rescue outcomes. We are seeing quicker recoveries,” he said.

He cited the March 2024 abduction of schoolchildren in Kuriga, Kaduna State, as a key example.

According to him, the incident, which drew national attention, was handled with urgency by the authorities.

“President Tinubu ordered security agencies to prioritise the rescue operation immediately, and within about 17 days, 137 hostages were rescued,” he said.

He noted that the outcome was widely seen as faster compared to previous incidents such as the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, where many victims remained in captivity for years.

Keshinro also pointed to other rescue operations, including the recovery of 16 Almajiri pupils in Sokoto State during the same period, as well as the rescue of 38 worshippers abducted in Kwara State in November 2025.

“In the Kwara case, all 38 victims were freed within days of the abduction,” he said.

He further mentioned the rescue of 24 schoolgirls abducted from a boarding school in Kebbi State.

He described it as another example of improved response by security forces.

According to him, the military has also recorded broader successes in counterinsurgency operations, including the rescue of hundreds of abducted persons in Borno State.

“There have been larger operations where about 360 abducted persons were rescued from terrorist captivity,” he added.

Comparing the current administration with that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Keshinro said both governments recorded some successes, but noted differences in response time.

“Under Buhari, there were major recoveries, including some Chibok girls and Dapchi students, but many victims stayed long in captivity and kidnappings continued,” he said.

“Under Tinubu, security challenges remain and kidnappings have not disappeared, but several major abductions have been followed by relatively rapid rescue operations,” he added.

Despite the improvements, the analyst stressed that insecurity is still a serious concern, with reports of kidnappings and bandit attacks continuing in some parts of the country.

“It is important to note that insecurity is still a major issue. The problem has not been eliminated,” he said.

He, however, maintained that the speed of response in recent high-profile cases shows some level of progress.

“From the standpoint of speed of response, the Kuriga rescue in particular shows a more rapid recovery compared to what we saw in the past,” he said.

Atiku decries economic hardship driving youth to sell kidneys

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised alarm over what he described as a growing trend of young Nigerians selling their kidneys to survive amid the country’s cost-of-living crisis, blaming President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies for the development.

The Africa Democratic Congress presidential candidate, in a post on X on Thursday, said he had heard “disturbing stories” of young Nigerians resorting to selling body organs, particularly kidneys, in desperate attempts to raise money.

“I have heard disturbing stories about the extent to which young Nigerians are being driven simply to survive. Perhaps the most horrifying are the growing reports of young people selling parts of their bodies: kidneys in particular, in desperate attempts to raise money,” Atiku wrote.

He said young Nigerians ought to be “selling dreams, ideas and innovation, not their body organs,” adding that the trend should “offend the conscience of every Nigerian.”

Atiku claimed that young Nigerians were reportedly being driven to sell their kidneys for as little as ₦1.7m, a figure he did not attribute to any specific report or agency.

PUNCH could not independently verify the figure as of the time of this report.

The former Vice President linked the trend to the rising cost of living under the Tinubu administration, listing food, transport, rent, school fees, medicine and electricity as items that have become increasingly unaffordable for ordinary Nigerians.

He said, “In Tinubu’s Nigeria, almost everything required to live with dignity is becoming more expensive by the day: food, transport, rent, school fees, medicine and electricity.

“Yet young Nigerians are reportedly being driven to sell their kidneys for as little as ₦1.7 million.

“That should break the heart of a nation.

“Young Nigerians should be building careers, starting businesses, raising families and pursuing their dreams, not calculating how much parts of their bodies can fetch simply to stay alive.

“When young Nigerians begin to see their kidneys as emergency savings, we are no longer talking about ordinary economic hardship. We are talking about desperation at its most frightening.”

Atiku acknowledged that Nigeria already has laws prohibiting commercial organ sales and organ trafficking, but argued that “laws alone cannot cure the poverty and desperation that make vulnerable young people easy prey for criminal networks.”

He called for economic reforms with “a human face,” including affordable food, cheaper transportation, accessible healthcare, decent jobs and “renewed hope for the next generation.”

The former Vice President capped the statement with a direct jab at the President: “Tinubu made Nigeria expensive. I will make Nigeria affordable again.”

Atiku’s remarks come amid a spate of reports and unverified claims about organ trafficking in parts of the country in recent weeks.

The Nigeria Police Force recently paraded four suspects, including two nephrologists, over the alleged operation. Police said one of the suspects, Emmanuel Ode, allegedly admitted to recruiting victims and disclosed that a 22-year-old man had been lured to a hospital in Abuja in April, where his kidney was allegedly harvested for $1,250, equivalent to about N1.7m.

Investigators said the alleged syndicate targeted vulnerable and financially desperate young people in Nasarawa and neighbouring areas.

FG counters Obi, Kwankwaso over Tinubu’s re-election chances

The Federal Government has dismissed claims by presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi and his running mate, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, that President Bola Tinubu would be defeated in the 2027 general elections, insisting that the All Progressives Congress remains confident of retaining the Presidency.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, said the APC would win the presidential election as well as the governorship and other elective contests in Kaduna State, rejecting suggestions of growing opposition to the ruling party in the North.

Musa spoke on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, hours after Obi and Kwankwaso told their supporters that they were prepared to resist any attempt to manipulate the 2027 polls.

While Obi warned that voters would not allow their votes to be subverted at polling units, Kwankwaso argued that the APC could lose despite controlling more than 30 states, citing the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

Musa, who was responding to a suggestion that voters in Kaduna might punish the APC and President Tinubu over the performance of the administration.

Rejecting the suggestion, Musa described the perceived rejection of the APC in the North as a matter of perception.

“That’s a perception. It’s a perception, and I mean, everybody has his own perception to deal with. People will always have the good, the bad, and the ugly,” he said.

Asked whether the APC could lose Kaduna State in 2027, Musa said he was certain the party would win the state.

“I cannot say cannot lose. APC will win in Kaduna. That I know,” he said.

Asked if he was referring to the governorship election, the minister replied, “Definitely. Presidential, governorship, and all levels.”

Musa, who is from the North, was also asked about the reported growing sentiment against the APC and Tinubu in the region.

He dismissed the suggestion, saying some people were attempting to exploit public sentiments because they were dissatisfied with their current circumstances.

“That’s why I said there are some people, because probably they are not where they think they are, the tendency is they want to whip up sentiments. APC is this, APC is that,” he said.

The minister defended Tinubu’s policies, saying the President had taken difficult decisions that would gradually produce results.

“But I can tell you this, the President has taken very painful decisions, and I can tell you these are decisions that are coming in gradually,” Musa said.

He said Nigerians would eventually appreciate the rationale behind some of the administration’s decisions, particularly its economic policies.

“I mean, you can look at the economy and all these things, we’re coming in gradually. At a time, people will now realise that, look, this thing we thought was like this, this is actually how it’s going,” he said.

Musa concluded his argument with a firm prediction: “And I can tell you, APC will win.”

Obi, Kwankwaso

Earlier on Thursday, Obi and Kwankwaso assured supporters and party faithful that nobody would intimidate them or subvert their will at the polling booths during the general elections in 2027.

This is as Obi vowed that anyone who attempted to prevent votes from being counted in the poll would himself be counted.

He spoke during a Town Hall Meeting with voters tagged “Obi Talks Nigeria’ held in Port Harcourt.

Fielding questions from the supporters, Obi said it would be delusional for anyone to think that the 2027 election would easily be manipulated like that of 2023.

“Nobody will intimidate us again at the polling booth. If you get to any polling booth today, the highest number of officials you see in any polling booth is five.

Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, where he finished third behind Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Tinubu defeated 17 other candidates after securing 8,794,726 votes, the highest tally in the election, and meeting the constitutional requirement for victory.

He also won at least 25 per cent of the votes in 30 states, exceeding the constitutional threshold of 25 states.

Atiku came second with 6,984,520 votes, while Obi polled 6,101,533 votes.

Despite the official declaration of the results, Obi alleged that the election was marred by manipulation and the intimidation of his loyalists, and he, alongside many of his supporters, has continued to maintain that he won Rivers State and the 2023 presidential election.

Obi declared that anyone plotting to manipulate the 2027 election would find it difficult to succeed.

He stated, “No one will intimidate us again at the polling booth. If you get to any polling booth today, the highest number of officials you see at any polling booth is five.

“The average number of voters is 40 to 50. There’s no way five people will intimidate 50 people. And we will make sure we have coordination to ensure that such intimidation does not arise.

“The people who are in these polling booths are from families that are suffering from hunger. Some of the policemen’s children are not in school. All they want is for you to defend and demand that your vote must count.

“And that is the demand we are going to make aggressively. Yes, they will try to manipulate the IReV. But let me tell you, it will not be easy this time,” Obi stated.

The NDC presidential candidate further said voters would resist any attempt to manipulate results through the INEC Result Viewing Portal, adding that multiple portals would be provided.

According to him, “There will be so many IReVs this time. This time around, if there is a network glitch, we will give them another one that has no glitch.

“By allowing them to continue, that glitch will glitch our lives. That’s what we are suffering today. This time, all of us will rescue our country. Somebody said, ‘We are ready to die.’ Let me tell you, I’m ready to die too.”

The party’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, said Nigeria needs a committed, strong and energetic president capable of addressing the country’s challenges and meeting the needs of its citizens.

On his part, Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to make the right choice of leadership, noting that many of those seeking the presidency lacked the necessary experience to effectively govern the country.

He said: “I believe that Nigerians must not make mistakes again. This is the time to get it right. And anything to the contrary, I believe people, if they make a mistake, certainly people will regret making that mistake. Because it will be too costly for the people and the country. Many of these people have no experience, or they want to forget history.”

Kwankwaso noted that the ruling party would lose the election despite having 30 state governors, recalling that former President Goodluck Jonathan lost the election even while in power.

He stated, “Jonathan was the president, the sitting president lost the election. I’ve given you an example, especially those who think because they have over 30 governors, they cannot lose the election. That was a very big mistake.

“By the grace of God, all of them (governors), especially the ones in the North, because I studied the trend.

“The trend is those governors and their party have performed woefully, to the extent that it is very difficult for them even to come out and campaign. Why? Because from top to bottom, did absolutely nothing,” he said.

Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of the NDC in Rivers State, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, thanked the party and its members for showing resilience and patience at the meeting.

Lulu-Briggs said the party would transform the country into a nation that works, adding that Rivers supporters have the courage to work for the party.

“We want to thank you for your sacrifice. I want to assure you that we shall have a Nigeria that works. I want to thank your excellencies, the leadership of our great party, for giving us this platform.

“I want to assure your excellencies that we are not afraid. Courage is not the absence of fear. But fear that has set us free,” Chief Lulu-Briggs stated.

APC reacts

However, the APC described Obi and Kwankwaso’s statement as cheap talk and wishful thinking.

The National Secretary of the party, Ajibola Basiru, who spoke with The PUNCH on Thursday, reminded both Obi and Kwankwaso that former President Muhammadu Buhari won his re-election while the APC also won in many states.

He said, “Talk is cheap, and they are poor students of history. Buhari was a sitting President and won re-election and his party won under him. Maybe they are suffering from partial amnesia.

“Their party does not even have governorship candidates in at least 12 states and National Assembly candidates in a large number of constituencies. Presidential election is not won on empty rhetoric or wishful thinking. We are confident that Nigerians will re elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

ADC dismisses Wike

Meanwhile, the ADC in Rivers State has dismissed FCT minister Nyesom Wike’s claim of winning the state in next year’s election.

Wike had on Thursday claimed that the ADC and NDC would lose in Rivers State and Abuja.

An ally of Rotimi Amaechi, the ADC running mate to Atiku Abubakar, and State Publicity Secretary of the ADC in Tivers State, Chizi Enyi, in an interview with The PUNCH, said Wike said Wike had betrayed all those who assured him to limelight.

While alleging that Wike had a penchant for violence, the Rivers ADC spokesman said the party was not perturbed by his rantings.

Enyi stated, “Wike has consistently been saying he will win Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja just to please Tinubu. And we all know that Wike is one man who will say one thing and does another.

“He is someone who has consistently said that the only thing he owes himself on earth is always to please Dr Peter Odili. Today where is Odili? Wike also believed that former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan is God on earth when he was contesting for governor. Today where is Jonathan?

“So, for President Bola Tinubu it will be the same thing and when he (Tinubu) leaves office he will be the way Odili and Jonathan are currently.”

“For the ADC in Rivers State we are not disturbed because while we are busy campaigning, we have information that they are busy lobbying INEC, changing Electoral Officers and all that.

“So, we are not disturbed. We know and we believe that from what we have seen and from the what we have done, talking to people and the personality of our candidates we are confident that we will win the general election in Rivers State and Nigeria in general.

“Everybody knows that Wike is synonymous with violence. He always intimidate people, talks one thing and does another. However we are not disturbed because the 2027 general elections Wike will be a thing of the past.

“We strongly believe that the Abubakar/Amaechi ticket the ADC is the party to beat. In Rivers State Amaechi did very well as governor and his records are there for all to see,” he said.

Reps deputy spokesman warns opposition against damaging Nigeria’s image

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has urged United States President Donald Trump and his administration to ignore what he described as politically motivated lobbying over historical US law enforcement records relating to President Bola Tinubu.

Agbese also warned opposition politicians against, in his words, damaging Nigeria’s international image in their bid to gain political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Benue lawmaker spoke to journalists in Abuja on Thursday while reacting to recent lobbying activities in Washington aimed at drawing the attention of officials in the Trump administration and members of the US Congress to allegations concerning Tinubu.

Agbese said political disagreements should not be pursued at the expense of Nigeria’s reputation or the well-being of citizens living, working and doing business outside the country.

He said, “This has gone beyond politics. When desperate politicians begin to export their political battles and package Nigeria as a country whose leadership is allegedly built around criminality, they are not hurting President Tinubu alone.

“They are damaging the image of every Nigerian who travels, studies, works, does business or seeks opportunities abroad.”

The Labour Party chieftain consequently urged Trump and his administration to scrutinise the motives and credibility of individuals and groups presenting themselves as advocates for Nigeria before acting on information supplied through political lobbying.

“We call on President Trump and his administration to ignore elements whose new responsibility appears to be blackmailing the Federal Government of Nigeria and, by extension, the Nigerian people who are earnestly earning a living abroad.

“America and Nigeria have a relationship that is far bigger than the ambitions of desperate politicians. That relationship should be built around security, trade, investment, development and the mutual interests of both countries, not opposition-sponsored campaigns designed to influence Washington against Nigeria,” he said.

Continuing, Agbese said opposition politicians were entitled to criticise the Federal Government and challenge the policies of the Tinubu administration, but insisted that foreign governments and institutions should not be used to settle domestic political disputes.

The deputy spokesman further warned the Federal Government not to let itself be distracted by what he described as politically motivated attempts to create international controversy around the President as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Political competition is legitimate, but there must be a line that every responsible politician must refuse to cross. You cannot spend your time telling the world that your own country is being led by criminals simply because you want to defeat the person in power.

“At some point, you must ask what happens to the Nigerian student seeking admission, the entrepreneur looking for an international partner, the professional applying for a job and the millions of Nigerians whose identity is tied to this country,” he said.

The lawmaker also questioned the reliance on decades-old documents arising from a civil forfeiture proceeding to define Nigeria’s current political leadership, particularly as the materials were being promoted against the backdrop of the approaching general elections.

According to him, Nigerians should be concerned about the wider consequences of political campaigns that portray the country negatively before foreign governments and international institutions.

He said, “We must stop treating Nigeria’s international reputation as collateral damage in our political contests. Whoever wins an election will still inherit the same country, and whoever loses will remain a Nigerian.

“You cannot destroy the country’s reputation today and expect ordinary Nigerians to escape the consequences tomorrow. The damage will show up in business relationships, immigration decisions, investment opportunities and the treatment of our citizens abroad.”

Agbese said the House of Representatives would continue to defend Nigeria’s national interest while encouraging political actors to pursue their disagreements through the country’s democratic and judicial institutions.

The development comes barely 48 hours after the Presidency dismissed reports and lobbying activities surrounding calls for the release of historical United States law enforcement records relating to Tinubu, describing the campaign as politically motivated.

The Presidency had also criticised a Washington-based lobbying firm reportedly engaged by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in connection with the campaign for the release of the records, alleging that the development was aimed at generating political controversy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, stated the Presidency’s position in a statement issued on Tuesday and titled, “Speculation as Classified Information: Atiku’s $1.2 million Lobbying Gamble Exposed.”

Dare accused the Washington-based Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., of presenting political claims as intelligence reports and attempting to create the impression that its statements represented the position of the United States government.
