Report reveals 7,825 abducted, N7.8bn ransom paid in one year

Published

on

A report by SBM Intelligence has revealed that no fewer than 7,825 people were abducted in 1,713 kidnap and kidnap-related incidents between July 2025 and June 2026, while at least 1,142 people were reported killed.

The report, titled The Capture of the Kidnap Economy, also disclosed that N7.8bn was paid as ransom during the period under review.

Security experts have, however, condemned the growing kidnap-for-ransom economy in the country, warning that the payment of billions of naira to criminal groups was strengthening their capacity to acquire arms and sustain violent operations.

According to SBM Intelligence, ransom demanded by kidnappers dropped from N48bn to N22.9bn, while actual payments rose from N2.56bn to N7.78bn, increasing the collection rate from 5.35 per cent to 34 per cent.

The report attributed 90 per cent of the ransom paid to the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad faction of Boko Haram, which reportedly collected N7bn from only eight incidents.

It said two major abductions accounted for almost the entire amount, including the N5bn ransom reportedly paid for 416 captives abducted from Ngoshe, Borno State, and N2bn for 315 pupils and staff of St Mary’s School, Papiri, Niger State.

SBM Intelligence said mass abduction had become the most frequent mode of operation among kidnappers, with Zamfara recording 92 mass abductions and Sokoto 76 during the period.

It noted that the resurgence of school abductions, particularly the Papiri incident, had broader consequences for education, agriculture and public confidence.

The report also warned that ransom payment did not guarantee victims’ survival, noting that in at least six cases, hostages were killed after ransom had been paid.

It recommended disrupting the financial flows sustaining insurgency while addressing the economic conditions that supply recruits to criminal groups.

“Without a coordinated strategy that targets both the profitability of the crime and its roots, Nigeria risks entrenching kidnapping not merely as a criminal industry but as a funding mechanism for the very groups that most threaten its stability,” the report warned.

Reacting to the development, security expert, Jackson Ojo, described Nigeria as an “unsafe territory,” blaming the worsening kidnapping crisis on what he called the lackadaisical attitude of some government officials.

Ojo said the failure of the state to mount sufficient resistance had allowed terrorists, bandits and kidnappers to transform abduction into a major revenue-generating enterprise.

“Due to the lackadaisical attitude of some persons in government, they have now helped the terrorists, the kidnappers, and the bandits to turn the kidnapping industry in Nigeria into one of the highest industries and economic revenue-generating industries in Nigeria,” he said.

The security expert stressed that the primary responsibility of government was to protect citizens, arguing that Nigerians remained vulnerable while being legally restricted from bearing arms for self-defence.

He also expressed concern over the increasing sophistication and audacity of criminal groups, citing instances where bandits allegedly issued advance notices to communities and demanded specific items, including motorcycles and call cards, as ransom.

Ojo further raised concern over the number of military personnel killed in the fight against terrorists and bandits, saying the loss of senior officers had become alarming.

“It has degenerated to the extent that we have lost about four generals, we have lost about three or four colonels, and countless numbers of majors, captains, and others,” he said.

Also reacting, a former Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory and security consultant, Lawrence Alobi, described the huge ransom payments as exploitative and a major driver of organised crime.

Alobi said the funds paid to kidnappers were being used to acquire more weapons and strengthen criminal networks.

“In fact, kidnapping has now become like a lucrative business for the huge amount of money that has been given to bandits.

“By paying these ransoms, it strengthens them because they go and get more arms, get empowered, and so forth. It emboldens criminality,” he said.

Alobi advocated measures to stop ransom payments, saying the practice had turned kidnapping into a commercial venture.

He, however, acknowledged the difficult position of families whose relatives were held hostage, noting that victims’ relatives were often compelled to pay because they wanted to save their loved ones.

“If it’s possible, the issue of ransom should not be paid to anybody,” he said, adding that families were often forced to pay because “the victim is always at the mercy of the family.”

The FBI Director, Kash Patel, disclosed this in a post shared on his official X account on Thursday.

Patel said the operation, codenamed “Operation Blackout”, was carried out in the week as part of the FBI’s efforts to dismantle global scam centres.

“OPERATION BLACKOUT: This is the FBI’s global scam-centre fraud demolition. Another takedown this week out of Ghana,” Patel wrote.

Police arrest prophet’s son in Ogun over N18m online fraud

Published

on

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspect, Adewale Arojah, identified as a prophet’s son, for allegedly impersonating a renowned cleric on Facebook and defrauding multiple victims of over N18m under the guise of offering prayers and spiritual assistance.

According to a statement by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, on Thursday, the arrest followed a complaint lodged on October 3, 2026, by Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun”.

The command said Akogun alerted the police after members of the public complained about “fraudulent activities being perpetrated in his name through a duplicated Facebook profile.”

“Upon receipt of the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer, Ilaro Division, immediately detailed intelligence and detective operatives to track down the perpetrator,” the statement said.

It added that “through sustained technological monitoring and intelligence-led analysis, the suspect was tracked to a nearby village in Ajegunle, via the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where he was successfully apprehended.”

The police said the suspect confessed during interrogation to impersonating the cleric on Facebook.

“During a rigorous interrogation, the suspect confessed to impersonating the real Prophet Akogun on Facebook.

“He admitted to using the cleric’s identity to deliver fake prophecies and offer prayer services to vulnerable individuals, thereby defrauding victims residing both within Nigeria and in the diaspora,” Babaseyi said.

The command said preliminary investigations showed that the suspect allegedly targeted people seeking spiritual assistance through the prophet’s Facebook page.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect systematically targeted victims seeking spiritual assistance on the said prophet’s Facebook page, gains their trust and swindled them of funds amounting to over ₦18 million,” it said.

The suspect has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

The command said the investigation would be used to ascertain the extent of the crime, identify potential accomplices, and ensure possible prosecution.

The command said the arrest was part of its efforts to tackle online fraud and identity theft in the state.

“The swift arrest highlights the Ogun State Police Command’s resolve to dismantle online fraud networks, curb identity theft, and deny cybercriminals safe space to operate across the state,” Babaseyi said.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ilaro operatives for what the statement described as their “vigilance, tactical discipline, and swift response”.

The CP also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting residents from digital and physical threats.

The command advised members of the public to exercise caution when dealing with religious leaders and public figures on social media.

“The Command advises members of the public to exercise caution and due diligence when engaging with religious leaders or public figures on social media platforms,” the statement said.

Adeleke summons security chiefs over Osun cult killings

Published

on

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has summoned heads of security agencies in the state to a meeting following a spike in security breaches, particularly recent killings involving rival cult groups in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Samuel Ojo, disclosed this during an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, saying the meeting would be held on Wednesday.

Ojo said the meeting would deliberate on and address the killings by suspected cultists in the state.

He added that the meeting would also discuss measures to make forests in the state safer, in view of the recent killing of an ISWAP leader in Owo, Ondo State.

“We are holding a security meeting on Wednesday, by the special grace of God, to reassure our people and put our security agencies on their toes.

“What happened in Ondo is a lesson to those criminals hibernating in the forests.

We will not take it lightly with anyone using the forest as a hideout,” he said.

He further said, “Aside from that, we are also using the meeting to address the incessant killings by rival cult groups in the past weeks.

“We need to meet and discuss how to stop these killings by cult groups or any other violent crimes hiding under that canopy.”

The governor’s aide, who stressed the need to stop the killings to protect Osun’s corporate image, warned perpetrators of violent crimes to desist or face dire consequences.

“We need to stop it, so as not to give our state a bad name, because nobody knows what they are fighting for or why they are killing themselves,” Ojo said.

The PUNCH reports that two separate attacks by members of rival cult groups, which occurred in Osogbo, the state capital, between last Friday and Sunday, left two people dead and about five others injured.

In reaction to the latest cult attack, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, subsequently ordered tactical teams to raid suspected criminal hideouts in Osogbo.
