Marriage can begin with love, excitement and big dreams—but over time, everyday behaviour can determine whether that marriage becomes a place of peace or a source of constant pain.
One uncomfortable question every husband should occasionally ask himself is:
“If my wife could choose again today, would she still choose me?”
That question is not meant to create fear. It is meant to encourage reflection.
A husband may provide financially and still fail to provide emotional support. He may pay the bills and still make his wife feel unseen. He may work hard for the family but rarely communicate, appreciate or spend meaningful time with his wife.
Providing is important—but marriage involves more than provision.
A healthy relationship also requires respect, communication, affection, honesty, trust and appreciation.
Don’t take your wife for granted
Some problems in marriage do not begin with one dramatic event. They develop gradually.
A husband may stop listening.
Conversations become arguments.
Appreciation disappears.
Affection becomes rare.
Small disagreements become permanent resentment.
Eventually, two people can live under the same roof while feeling emotionally distant.
That is why husbands should never assume that because their wives are still at home, everything is fine.
But this responsibility is not one-sided
Marriage is a partnership.
Wives also have a responsibility to respect their husbands, communicate honestly, show appreciation and contribute to building a peaceful home.
The goal should not be to ask, “Who is to blame?”
The better question is:
“What can both of us do differently to make this marriage stronger?”
Before you criticize your spouse, look at yourself
Are you listening to your partner?
Do you appreciate what they do?
Do you speak to them with respect during disagreements?
Do you make time for each other?
Do you apologize when you are wrong?
Do you make your spouse feel loved and valued?
Sometimes, the biggest change in a marriage can begin when one person becomes willing to honestly examine their own behaviour.
THE BIG QUESTION
If you have been married for years, ask yourself:
Has your marriage become better because of the way you treat your spouse—or have you slowly made your spouse unhappy?
There is no perfect husband and no perfect wife.
But there should always be a willingness to listen, learn, apologize, improve and love better.
