PDP convenes emergency meeting after court halts convention

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party has summoned an emergency meeting of its National Working Committee following Friday’s judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja halting its planned national convention billed for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

A member of the NWC, who spoke to Saturday PUNCH on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly, said the meeting would hold on Saturday at the party’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

“That’s the judgment. However, I know that the NWC has summoned an emergency meeting tomorrow. The leaders will review what transpired throughout the process and determine the next line of action,” the official said.

“The party is set for a very serious deliberation, which will shape its next steps and provide members and Nigerians a clearer sense of direction in the coming days.”

The emergency session comes after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, stopped the opposition party from holding the convention over alleged violations of the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and the party’s own internal constitution.

Delivering judgment in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, the judge held that the PDP failed to conduct valid state congresses in several states and also breached the law by failing to issue the mandatory 21-day notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before convening the convention.

Omotosho ruled that the irregularities were fundamental and rendered the entire process leading to the proposed convention invalid.

“The failure of the PDP to comply with the law has put the planned convention in jeopardy. The party must do the needful before going ahead with the election,” he declared.

He further ruled that all convention notices must be jointly signed by the National Chairman and National Secretary, adding that the signing of such documents by the chairman alone was unlawful.

The judge consequently restrained INEC from monitoring, recognising, or publishing the outcome of any PDP convention that did not meet the legal requirements.

“INEC is not entitled to give effect to the outcome of any political party convention that does not comply with the provisions of the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and relevant party guidelines,” Omotosho said.

The suit was filed by three aggrieved PDP members — Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP Chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia PDP Chairman), and Turnah George (South-South Zonal Secretary).

They asked the court to halt the planned convention on the grounds that it violated both the Electoral Act and the PDP’s internal rules.

They alleged that no valid congresses were conducted in at least 14 states before the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee issued notice for the convention.

The nine defendants in the suit include INEC, the PDP, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, the NWC, the NEC, Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum, Ali Odefa, and Emmanuel Ogidi.

In rejecting the PDP’s preliminary objection that the case was an internal affair, Justice Omotosho ruled that compliance with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines transcends party matters.

“Non-compliance with the rules and regulations of INEC and political parties cannot be regarded as an internal affair of a political party. INEC has the power to issue subsidiary legislation for the conduct of political parties, and such subsidiary legislation has the force of law,” he said.

The verdict sparked mixed reactions in the courtroom, which was filled to capacity by lawyers, journalists, and party members. Despite the hum of a heavy-duty air conditioner, the atmosphere turned hot and tense as the judge read his ruling.

As soon as the judgment was delivered, the plaintiffs’ supporters broke into songs and dances, while the PDP delegation filed out in silence, their faces grim.

Damagum: Judgment a threat to democracy

Speaking with journalists after the proceedings, the PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum condemned the ruling as a setback for democracy vowing that the party would appeal immediately.

“This is not what we expected. We will appeal it. You cannot stop a whole political party from exercising its legal rights. This judgment today is a panacea to annihilating democracy in this country,” he said.

In a statement later on Friday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba described the judgment as an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process but insisted that the ruling would not derail the party’s plans.

“The judgment does not vitiate our ability to proceed with the processes and activities towards electing new national officers. Our lawyers have been directed to appeal immediately,” Ologunagba stated.

He urged all members and party organs to stay focused on preparations for the convention, promising that the PDP would defend its rights within the bounds of the law.

“The PDP charges its members, chapters, and organs to remain steadfast and focused on preparations for the National Convention. We are committed to upholding and promoting multiparty democracy in Nigeria,” he added.

Second suit by Lamido

In a separate development, another suit seeking to stop the same convention was filed by former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido before Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Lamido, through his counsel Jeph Njikonye (SAN), had sought interim orders restraining the PDP and INEC from going ahead with the convention pending the hearing of his main motion.

However, Justice Lifu declined to grant the ex parte motion, instead directing the defendants to appear within 72 hours to show cause why the reliefs sought should not be granted.

The case was adjourned to November 6 for hearing.

Lamido, a founding member of the PDP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, said in his filing that the party’s leadership was violating its constitution and denying him the right to contest for the position of National Chairman.

He argued that the court had an obligation to preserve the subject matter of the suit until a substantive hearing.

Party leaders preach calm

Following the rulings, senior PDP officials called for calm and unity, describing the judgment as both a challenge and an opportunity for introspection.

The Deputy National Youth Leader and NEC member, Timothy Osadolor, said the decision offered the party a chance to address long-standing grievances and rebuild internal cohesion.

“It may not be the best of judgments, but it’s an opportunity to put our house in order. We’re depleted enough already and should stop entertaining divisions. We need to reflect and come out stronger,” Osadolor said.

Another NEC member, who also serves on the National Working Committee but was not authorised to speak publicly, described the court’s decision as a “wake-up call” for reform.

“This is not the end of the PDP; it is the beginning of a reformed PDP. We must regroup, reconcile, and prepare for the challenges ahead,” the official told Saturday PUNCH.

He added that the leadership would soon convene a meeting of key stakeholders across the country to evaluate the party’s next steps and consider an appeal.

Despite the court battles, deep divisions persist within the party, particularly between allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and supporters of the acting chairman.

The disagreements centre on the control of party structures in the South-South, the zoning of national offices, and the micro-zoning formula ahead of the planned convention.

These long-standing disputes, which began after the 2023 general elections, have continued to undermine efforts to stabilise the opposition party.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Pledges Full Support For Tinubu’s Re-election

Published

on

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has vowed to support President Bola Tinubu until 2031.

The organisation declared its support in a statement issued over the weekend by Ohanaeze’s factional Deputy President-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Chinenyeze Ohia.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo called for the completion of all significant projects in the South-East zone ahead of 2027 elections.

The group hailed Tinubu for his decision to appoint David Umahi to serve as Minister of Works, noting that this marks the first instance in 74 years, since 1951, that an Igbo individual has held the vital position.

Ohanaeze said that for the temporary opening of the Lagos-Calabar coastal Highway, Umahi has distinguished himself.

The organisation said, “Without hesitation, we, the Ndigbo, declare forthrightly: for the first time since 2015, we are witnessing a political landscape where all five Southeast Governors, all five Igbo Ministers, and the entire Southeast region stand unwaveringly loyal to President Tinubu’s re-election campaign for 2027.

“In recognition of the recent temporary opening of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on the 12th of December 2025, Ohanaeze Ndigbo acknowledges this remarkable achievement.

“It is a significant milestone that enhances festive season travel and provides much-needed relief to millions of Nigerians, particularly commuters in Lagos.

“The year 2025 has been characterised by an unprecedented transparency in governance, exemplified by the Federal Government’s proactive engagement of the nation’s anti-graft agencies, the EFCC and the ICPC.

“Their audits of financial transactions and contractor performances have paved the way for timely payments and enforced accountability, thereby reinforcing adherence to contractual agreements between the Federal Government and both domestic and foreign contractors.”

Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged the Federal Government to create opportunities in 2026 for local Nigerian contractors to compete on an equitable basis with foreign counterparts.

“As we reflect on the substantial infrastructural investment of 1.5 trillion Naira, directed toward road projects in the Southeast region, we commend President Tinubu for his unparalleled benevolence,” it further stated.

Ondo APC, PDP clash over N10,000 handouts by Aiyedatiwa

Published

on

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has denied allegations that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa distributed N10,000 handouts to residents during his visit to the Akoko area on Monday.

The Peoples Democratic Party, through its Director of Media and Public Communications, Wande Ajayi, claimed the governor shared cash and tokens with people in the four local government areas of Akoko.

The PDP stated, “At this point in his tenure, the governor ought to be embarking on a statewide commissioning tour of completed projects rather than parading communities to share N10,000 handouts and token gestures that insult the dignity of the people of Ondo State. Our people are not beggars, and Ondo State is not a charity home.

“After two years in office, the governor must account for the billions of naira that have accrued to the state, including federal allocations, internally generated revenue, and special intervention funds.

“What Ondo people deserve are functional schools, equipped hospitals, motorable roads, job opportunities, and a revitalised economy, not envelopes and handouts meant to mask governance failure.”

Reacting, APC’s Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, said the governor’s visit did not involve charity or serve as a substitute for governance.

He explained that such tours were a longstanding democratic tradition, allowing elected leaders to engage citizens, listen to concerns, assess projects, and express appreciation for public support.

Otaloro added, “Contrary to the PDP’s claims, this administration has not reduced governance to handouts or optics.

“The modest support extended to vulnerable citizens during the tour must be understood within the broader framework of social intervention and compassionate governance, particularly in a period of national economic adjustment.

“A government that acknowledges hardship and provides relief alongside long-term development planning is acting responsibly, not insultingly.

“On project delivery and fiscal accountability, the APC-led government has nothing to hide. Since assuming office, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has prioritised continuity, fiscal prudence, and the orderly execution of inherited and newly initiated projects.

“Across education, healthcare, road infrastructure, agriculture, and urban renewal, projects are at various stages of execution, many of which are verifiable on the ground.

“The opposition’s blanket claim that projects are below 20 per cent completion is not only inaccurate but intellectually dishonest.

“It is also disingenuous for the PDP to suddenly assume the posture of defenders of civil servants, pensioners, and public infrastructure.

“Ondo people are well aware of the legacy of abandoned projects, unpaid entitlements, and policy inconsistency that characterised PDP administrations in the state.”

Aiyedatiwa, on Monday, December 15, 2025, began a statewide tour of local government areas to thank the people at the grassroots.

The tour started with the four Akoko local government areas of Akoko North-West, Akoko North-East, Akoko South-East and Akoko South-West, where the governor thanked residents for their support and galvanised backing for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

“I am here to greet you and thank you. Some people say politicians do not return after elections. I have no election now. I only came to appreciate you all for your support for my administration,” he said during the visit.

Osun 2026: Anti-Adeleke forces attempting to hijack Accord Party, says spokesman

Published

on

The national leadership of the Accord Party has accused opposition elements in Osun State of sponsoring what it described as a “charade” aimed at hijacking the party ahead of the 2026 governorship election, following the conduct of a disputed parallel primary in the state.

The National Publicity Secretary of Accord, Joseph Omorogbe, stated this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

While emphasising that the exercise was illegal and unauthorised, Omorogbe claimed the parallel primary in Osun was staged by some fun-seeking fellows making a mockery of the nation’s democracy.”

He said, “Those behind the exercise were sponsored by some opposition figures in the state who are jittery of the emergence of the action Governor of Osun State, His Excellency Ademola Adeleke, as the flag bearer of Accord.”

The party spokesman noted that the alleged attempt to create confusion was short-lived, as the Independent National Electoral Commission promptly distanced itself from the exercise.

“The sham those political hirelings staged to hoodwink unsuspecting members of the public has been swiftly disowned by the Independent National Electoral Commission as null, void, and of no effect in the upcoming gubernatorial election in the state.

“Accord will not dissipate energy responding to frivolities from jokers and political nomads roaming the democratic space in search of elusive greener pastures,” Omorogbe said.

According to him, they were happy the electoral umpire made it clear that the commission was “not aware of the kangaroo exercise aimed at confusing the state that has been peaceful, stable, and safe for citizens since Adeleke assumed office.”

Reaffirming the party’s support for Governor Ademola Adeleke, the spokesman said the governor remained focused on governance rather than political intrigues.

“As a compassionate leader, Governor Adeleke is focused on delivering dividends of democracy to the good people of Osun State and will not be distracted by the antics of the main opposition party in the state,” he said.

He described Adeleke as “a man of the people and the only leader citizens trust and followed him to Accord, the platform that will protect their interests and well-being.”

Omorogbe concluded with a call for unity, urging members and supporters to “remain in one accord for unity, stability, security, and prosperity.”

The statement comes barely 24 hours after INEC publicly disowned a factional governorship primary reportedly conducted by a group claiming to be members of the Accord Party in Osun State.

On Sunday, the faction was said to have held a primary election in Osogbo, the state capital, which reportedly produced Bamigbola Clement as its candidate for the August 8, 2026, governorship election.

The exercise reportedly featured the accreditation of delegates and the presence of armed police operatives at the venue.

Bamigbola, who was presented as the sole aspirant, confirmed his emergence, saying, “It is true. We had our primary, and I emerged as the consensus candidate.”

However, INEC swiftly distanced itself from the exercise.

The PUNCH reported the commission’s Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Musa Olurode, as saying the electoral body was only aware of one Accord Party primary.

“We have monitored the only Accord Party primary a few days ago. The report has been submitted. INEC is not aware of any other party’s primary,” Olurode said.

INEC had monitored the earlier Accord primary held last Wednesday in Osogbo, where Governor Ademola Adeleke emerged unopposed as the party’s candidate for the 2026 poll.
