The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on Friday urged Nigerian workers to use their voting power in the 2027 general elections to elect leaders committed to improving their welfare through a living wage and people-oriented policies.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, made the call in a statement issued in Abuja to mark the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.
The NNPP’s message comes amid mounting economic pressure on workers, with rising inflation, high transportation and energy costs, and growing concerns over the widening gap between wages and the cost of living across the country.
Johnson, however, stressed that beyond commendations, workers must begin to assert their political strength by supporting leaders who prioritise their welfare.
He said, “As we move further into this critical electoral cycle, the NNPP urges every worker, from the civil servant in the city to the labourer in the field, to recognise their collective power.
“To transform the standard of living in Nigeria, workers must move beyond mere survival and embrace political organisation. We must ensure that the next crop of representatives and leaders are individuals who prioritise a living wage over a minimum wage, implement policies that drastically reduce the cost of living, and invest in social safety nets and infrastructure that ease the burden on the common man.”
The NNPP, however, warned that workers’ resilience should not be a substitute for prosperity.
According to him, Nigerians deserve a country that works for the benefit of all.
“Despite the daunting economic headwinds, the rising cost of living, and the daily struggle to make ends meet, your dedication to keeping the wheels of this country turning is nothing short of heroic.
“We recognise that this May Day comes at a time of profound reflection. The average Nigerian worker is currently navigating unprecedented inflationary pressures on food and essential services, a high cost of transportation and energy, and a widening gap between stagnant wages and the skyrocketing cost of survival,” Johnson added.
Reaffirming its position, the party said it remained committed to championing the interests of ordinary Nigerians and improving their quality of life.
