Character is one of the most powerful things a person possesses. Your appearance may attract attention, your wealth may impress people, and your position may give you influence, but your character determines the kind of reputation you build and how people respond to you over time.
A person who consistently demonstrates honesty, humility, kindness, self-control, and respect will usually earn the trust and respect of others. On the other hand, someone who is dishonest, arrogant, disrespectful, or unreliable may eventually lose the confidence of the people around them.
1. Your character speaks when you are not present
You may not always be around to explain yourself, but your character follows you wherever you go. People remember how you treated them, whether you kept your promises, and how you behaved when nobody was watching.

Do not live your life simply trying to make people like you. Instead, develop qualities that make you worthy of trust and respect.

Keep your promises.
Admit your mistakes.
Respect people who cannot benefit you.
Control your temper.
Help others without always expecting something in return.

If you want people to treat you with dignity, begin by treating others with dignity. If you want respect, demonstrate respect. If you want trust, become trustworthy.
