PDP rejects Lamido’s call for NWC dissolution

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the call by a former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, for the dissolution of the new National Working Committee and the appointment of a caretaker leadership.

The party stated that Lamido’s proposal contradicted the party’s constitution and could not stand while ongoing court cases remain unresolved.

Lamido had on Thursday issued a 10-day ultimatum to the party’s leadership to resolve its internal crisis after dragging the PDP to court over the national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in mid-November.

While addressing his supporters at his Sharada Office in Kano, Lamido called for the dissolution of the NWC and the immediate formation of a national caretaker committee for the party.

He stressed that Umar Damagum and Samuel Anyanwu remained the legitimate Chairman and Secretary of the party until their tenure expires on December 8, 2025.

But reacting, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP produced by the Ibadan convention, Ini Ememobong, said it was surprising that Lamido, who originally chose to take his grievances to court instead of using the party’s internal conflict-resolution channels, is now urging the party to rely on internal mechanisms to resolve the same issues.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Ememobong said Lamido’s position was against the current legal reality, explaining that several factions have already secured different court judgments, all of which are now before the Court of Appeal.

“He (Lamido) went to court and got a judgment. The Anyanwu group also has a judgment. Others have cases at the High Court. All of us are now before the Court of Appeal. With valid court orders already in place, his suggestion is practically impossible,” he said.

Ememobong stressed that the PDP constitution does not provide for a national caretaker committee, and the party cannot create one while the appellate court is handling appeals that have already been entered.

He added that if Lamido had opted for internal engagement earlier, the party would likely have settled the matter without litigation.

On the party’s efforts to reconcile with aggrieved leaders, Ememobong said Lamido was aware that party stakeholders had made attempts to reach him and others.

He explained that reconciliation would only succeed if all sides were willing to engage honestly.

“The elders, the Board of Trustees, and the NWC have all shown commitment to reconciliation. But both sides must be ready. It cannot be a case of insisting that things must go one person’s way,” he said.

According to him, governors in the party, the national chairman, and members of the NWC have been holding meetings with aggrieved members across the country in a bid to unify the party, “but it is up to those being contacted to confirm whether they accept the peace efforts.”

“Moves were made towards him. There is a disposition for reconciliation, but reconciliation must come when both parties are ready. You cannot reconcile on the basis of ‘my way or the highway’,” he said.

Ex-APC Chairman, Oba Adegboyega Famodun Is Dead

Published

on

The Gbeleru Royal Family of Igbajo has announced the death of the 30th Owa of Igbajo and former Osun All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman, Oba Adegboyega Famodun, who passed away at 67.

A statement signed on Sunday by Prince Adekunle Famodun, in Osogbo, confirmed that the monarch “passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025, after a brief illness.”

“As you may recall, Oba Adegboyega Famodun was installed and presented with the staff of office on November 24, 2022, by former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola,” the statement said.

The statement further noted that although his position was initially challenged through a white paper by the PDP-led state government, the Osun State High Court reinstated him on January 30, 2025.

“During his reign, Oba Famodun worked tirelessly to unite the people of Igbajoland, promoting peace, understanding and progress,” the statement said.

It added that, “His leadership and vision have left an indelible mark on the community, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. He will be remembered for his peaceful nature, exceptional wisdom and tireless efforts to promote community development.”

It was recalls that on March 12, 2024, the state announced the appointment of a new Owa, Prince Ademola Makinde.

The announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Local Government and Public Enlightenment, Mr Kolapo Alimi.

But APC, through its state chairman Tajudeen Lawal, faulted the decision at the time, arguing the stool was still a matter for the courts.

The Owa stool had initially become vacant in November 2022, when the PDP government led by Ademola Adeleke removed the then-installed monarch, setting off rival kingship claims anchored on the policies of the administration that preceded it, under Adegboyega Oyetola, who had initiated the 2022 installation.

‘If Peter Obi Does Not Make Up His Mind, Atiku Will Pick Amaechi As Running Mate’ – Momodu

Published

on

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar’s bloc within the African Democratic Party (ADC) has begun searching for a southern politician to serve as his running mate in the 2027 presidential election.

According to Sunday Punch, the bloc had narrowed its focus to Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party candidate.

There are indications that if Obi declines the offer, Atiku would consider former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

Speaking with Punch, Atiku’s political friend, veteran journalist Dele Momodu, publicly urged Obi to join Atiku in forming a strong opposition pact to dislodge the ruling party.

Momodu described Atiku and Obi as the two figures capable of delivering the strongest alliance Nigeria has seen since the 2019 election.

Recall that Atiku and Obi previously ran on the joint People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ticket in 2019, but lost to then-incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.

Momodu expressed frustration over what he described as public pushback from Obi’s supporters, whom he blamed for the reluctance to finalise the prospective match-up ahead of 2027.

He said, “That is why they are trying to make every party have only southern candidates. They don’t want any strong opposition from the opposite direction (North). There is no way any Southern candidate can defeat Tinubu.

“I have said this to Peter Obi. We have met several times at my houses in Lagos and Ghana. If Peter Obi does not take advantage of a ready-made union between him and Atiku, it would be very unfortunate. It would be as good as working for Tinubu to come back.”

Warning that delay could cost Obi a significant political opportunity, Momodu said Atiku may settle for Amaechi as his running mate.

He said, “A lot of people are underrating Amaechi. Amaechi single-handedly handed power to Buhari. What the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, is doing now, though in an unruly manner, Amaechi did quite well when he was governor of Rivers State. Amaechi mobilised more than any other person for Buhari, even more than Tinubu. If Obi does not make up his mind or chooses to run alone, then I believe the mantle might fall on Rotimi Amaechi.”

On efforts to reconcile both men politically, Momodu said, “I have told Obi. There is no time.

“The person you want to dislodge is already the President. He has everything. He is either coercing or cajoling the governors and senators to join him. He wants to present a false alibi that everybody loves him. He knows what he is doing.

“He wants to create a false image of someone who cannot be defeated, so that when they succeed at doing their manipulation, they will say, ‘What did you expect?’

“Despite all their shenanigans in 2023, they lost Lagos to Obi. They lost Osun to Gov Ademola Adeleke. Obi needs to make up his mind. For now, I don’t know his party. PDP is crumbling, LP has crumbled. Where does he want to go?”

Tinubu lacks understanding of insecurity, says opposition

Published

on

President Bola Tinubu’s call on herders to end open grazing, surrender illegal weapons, and transition fully to ranching has triggered criticisms from major opposition parties in the country.

In an exclusive interview with Sunday PUNCH, spokespersons for the Labour Party, African Democratic Congress, and Peoples Democratic Party accused the Tinubu administration of pushing “rhetoric,” lacking strategy, and misdiagnosing Nigeria’s security crisis.

The President had, on Wednesday, unveiled a new national livestock plan aimed at curbing the farmer–herder conflict and reducing armed violence in rural communities.

The policy, which forms part of the government’s broader security reforms and the work of the new Ministry of Livestock, also urges herder associations to embrace ranching and cooperate with security agencies.

Tinubu’s directive came amid renewed abductions of students in Niger and Kebbi schools and persistent farmer–herder clashes across the North Central region, where hundreds have been killed in recent months.

But opposition parties say the directive shows that the President misunderstands the nature of Nigeria’s insecurity.

“It is an organised criminal invasion,” said the spokesperson for the LP, Obiora Ifoh.

Ifoh said the insecurity ravaging the country was being perpetrated by terrorists.

“It is a case of terrorists invading the serenity of the nation. It’s not about the herders. Yes, I agree some terrorists disguise as herders, thereby making it difficult for you to isolate or differentiate who is genuinely a herder and who is a terrorist. But it’s the work that government must do.”

Ifoh argued that many of the recent attacks, including school invasions and church assaults, were carried out by armed groups who had nothing to do with cattle rearing.

“Did the people who came to invade the schools in the North come with any herd? No. What about the ones who attacked the church in Kwara? They are not herders.

“The terrorists doing these things are doing it because they want to make more money to buy more arms to control the invasion. So, it is up to the Federal Government to up the ante and do something good about it. But if they are willing, they can do something,” he stated.

Similarly, the African Democratic Congress described the President’s directive as empty talk.

ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, questioned the practicality of the policy.

He said, “Have you seen any herder carrying weapons? The ones they claim move around with firearms—are they carrying them about in the city? Some of these announcements are declarative, just for newspaper headlines.

“They don’t even have an idea how they want to implement it. For instance, they just declared a state of emergency on security. What does that mean in real terms? What should we expect to see?”

The ADC imagemaker argued that the government’s recent security declarations, including a state of emergency, have not translated into visible action.

“When you woke up this morning, is your life different than it was yesterday? It’s just another rhetoric to grab newspaper headlines, that’s all.”

Abdullahi also criticised the Tinubu administration’s plan to hire 30,000 new police officers, saying there is not enough infrastructure or ammunition to train them.

He said, “You are announcing that you want to hire 30,000 more policemen. Where will you put them and the existing policemen? Go and check their barracks. Where will they get the ammunition to even train them? Meanwhile, they train them with sticks.

“Even the existing policemen, you need to see how they count bullets to give them. So, a lot of very terrible things are going on. When they make this kind of statement, I doubt if the President is even aware of the depth of the decay. You are building an army when the war has already started.”

The Peoples Democratic Party took a tougher stance, accusing Tinubu of being out of touch with realities on the ground.

PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Tim Osadolor, said the President’s directive lacked depth.

“The President is just coming down to talk without even knowing what is happening around him. I am sure somebody told him that if he says something like that, it will resonate with the Nigerian people.

“Tinubu doesn’t even know what is happening. That is the truth. The problem is not armed herders,” he lamented.

Osadolor insisted that open grazing remains a major driver of tension and urged herders to acquire land or return to their ancestral communities.

“Animal husbandry is a private business, and until it is treated as such, we will continue to have problems. Like farmers and other businesses, let these herdsmen also purchase land for grazing or go back to their ancestral communities to rear them. May God help anybody who comes to my ancestral land in the name of pacifying herders,” he warned.

The PDP chieftain also mocked the practicality of the policy.

“So how does Tinubu plan to go about his policy? Is he going to queue up all the herdsmen in this country and start asking them one after the other if they own arms?” he queried.

Referencing a recent viral video of a Customs officer claiming to have distributed seized rice to bandits, Osadolor argued that the government itself appeared seemingly aware of the whereabouts of criminal groups.

“These are issues that should be taken seriously in a sane society. They should have invited that Customs officer to come and show us the location of the bandits they gave the bags of rice. It means his government knows where they are.

“If a senior government official in the Customs can be saying they know where they are and even give them a treat with illegal rice they impounded, it means there is a problem. So as 2027 approaches, Nigerians should brace up for more rhetoric and grand speeches. We should be able to demand accountability and ask for change,” he argued.

The criticisms came in the wake of renewed calls by Senator Francis Fadahunsi (APC, Osun East) for the National Assembly to legalise controlled civilian gun ownership to counter rising insecurity.

Fadahunsi told his colleagues during plenary that Nigeria is “at war” and must consider measures adopted in “about 120 countries” that allow citizens to carry arms.

“If the elite and a few of us who are okay are carrying guns, it will be war against these criminals, and they will run away because they are not many,” he said.

He also demanded death penalties for kidnappers and negotiators while questioning the competence of the current defence leadership.

“The Commander-in-Chief needs to look at the military architecture around him and do the needful.”

As debate deepens, the Tinubu administration insists that ranching, tighter border controls, and the disarmament of armed herders remain the only sustainable pathway to ending the farmer–herder crisis and restoring rural security.
