Opposition seeks credible polls as INEC releases timetable ahead of 2027

Published

on

Nigeria’s major opposition parties have expressed readiness for the 2027 general elections following the release of the timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, while demanding credible and transparent polls.

The Peoples Democratic Party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party and the African Democratic Congress said they were prepared to participate, but stressed that the integrity of the process would determine the legitimacy of the outcome.

According to INEC, the presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on February 20, 2027, while governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.

Campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly polls will run from November 18, 2026, to February 19, 2027. Governorship and state Assembly campaigns will begin on December 15, 2026, and end on March 5, 2027, 24 hours before the elections.

Political parties are expected to conduct primaries between July 1 and September 30, 2026, and submit their candidates’ lists between October 1 and October 31, 2026.

PDP declares readiness

The PDP National Caretaker Committee, aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said the party was fully prepared for the elections.

In a statement, the committee’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, urged members and aspirants to remain focused, assuring them that internal disputes and pending litigations would be resolved ahead of the primaries window.

“The PDP is fully prepared to meet all constitutional and regulatory requirements within the stipulated timelines,” the statement read, while reaffirming the party’s commitment to offering what it described as credible leadership in 2027.

Separately, the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee of the PDP also declared readiness for the polls, provided INEC guarantees free, fair and credible elections.

Its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said, “Whenever INEC is ready for the elections, the PDP will be ready, provided it can guarantee free, fair and credible elections.”

NNPP faults election budget

The NNPP welcomed the timetable but urged INEC to use the intervening period to prepare for an election acceptable to Nigerians and the international community.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, the party’s spokesperson, Ladipo Johnson, expressed concern over the N873.778bn budgeted for the elections, describing it as excessive.

“What are they using that huge amount for? Are they building new mobile phone towers to transmit results? I don’t know what they budgeted N800bn for, but it sounds ridiculous,” he said.

ADC seeks real-time transmission

The ADC also welcomed the timetable but said the credibility of the elections would depend on transparent procedures, particularly the real-time electronic transmission of results.

In a statement, its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said while the early release of the timetable allows for proper planning, public confidence would rest on INEC’s commitment to transparency and technological integrity.

He urged the commission to clarify its readiness to adopt real-time transmission if legal amendments are enacted and called on the National Assembly to remove ambiguities in the Electoral Act.

“Nigerians have shown, time and again, that they are ready to defend the sanctity of their votes. What is now required is for the electoral umpire to match that civic vigilance with institutional clarity, operational transparency and administrative excellence,” he said.

2027: Declare your intentions, Makinde tells appointees eyeing elective offices

Published

on

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has asked political appointees in his administration with aspirations for elective offices to openly declare their ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Makinde gave the directive on Thursday at the Oyo State Government-organised 2026 Iftar programme held at the frontage of the Banquet Hall, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.

In a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, the governor directed the aspirants to pursue their ambitions on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Makinde said such aspirants could count on his support as long as their loyalty and commitment remained with the people and the development of the state.

He noted that the directive became necessary following claims that he had not given clearance to aspirants seeking political offices, especially those serving in his administration, despite the election timetable having been released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“I have read on social media that I have not given the go-ahead to political appointees who have ambitions to hold different political offices, including the governorship seat.

“So, henceforth, you are free. Whoever wants to contest for any position should bring out their billboards. And those of you who are bothered about the PDP crisis, add the party’s logo to the billboard, nothing will happen.”

The governor used the occasion to appreciate Muslim faithful in the state for their prayers, support, and cooperation with his administration, noting that these had contributed to the state’s development, progress, and growth.

Earlier in his lecture, the guest lecturer at the Iftar programme, Fadilat Onihantu, commended Makinde for his leadership qualities and dedication to his family, faith, and the people of the state.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states, Daud Akinola, thanked the governor for consistently organising the Iftar programme since the inception of his administration and for his continued support for the Muslim community in the state.

He also called for more prayers for the state and the country.

In his vote of thanks, the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, appreciated Makinde and urged Muslims in the state to continue supporting the government.

The event was attended by a former governor of the state and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja; former Deputy Governor, Hamid Gbadamosi; Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Debo Ogundoyin, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Mohammed Fadeyi; the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Iyabo Yerima; member representing Ibadan South-West/North-West Federal Constituency, Dhikirulahi Olajide; and member representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency, Shina Oyedeji.

Also in attendance were the Secretary to the State Government, Musibau Babatunde; President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Tajudeen Abdulganiyu; Chief of Staff, Segun Ogunwuyi; Head of Service, Olubunmi Oni; Deputy Chief of Staff, Kazeem Adeniyi; and the Senior Executive Assistant to the Governor on General Duties, Bayo Lawal.

Others present included the Co-Chairman of the Oyo State Elders’ Council, Wole Oyelese; Chairman of the Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), Hashim Atere; Oyo State PDP Deputy Chairman, Wasiu Adeleke; Chairman of all Local Government Chairmen in the state, Sikiru Sanda; K.K. Shettima mocks ADC over flawed digital membership registration

Published

on

Vice President Kashim Shettima has mocked the African Democratic Congress over its online membership registration, saying that it has been inundated with fake identities.

He also taunted the opposition party over its longstanding demand for real-time electronic transmission of election results.

PUNCH Online reports that the ADC had, on March 1, commenced online membership registration nationwide ahead of the 2027 general election, in compliance with the amended Electoral Act.

The party also instructed existing members to update and revalidate their details in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

However, the registration exercise has been marred by several incorrect details, including fake names, National Identification Numbers and mismatched photographs, raising concerns about the integrity of the process.

In a statement on Tuesday, the party said it had corrected observed anomalies on its digital membership registration platform following widespread reports of fake entries.

Speaking on Wednesday during an interfaith breaking of fast attended by federal ministers and hosted by President Bola Tinubu, Shettima claimed that the party’s registration portal had been overwhelmed by fictitious entries.

“The same Alliance for Democratic Confusion that was adamant that we must have electronic transmission of votes opened their portal for membership registration, and it was overwhelmed by an avalanche of fake names and fictitious identities,” he said.

The vice president accused the opposition of peddling falsehoods and spreading misinformation about the policies of the Tinubu administration.

“You and I know that, as Winston Churchill once said, ‘truth is so precious that it must be surrounded by a bodyguard of lies’. Lies, lies, lies — that is what is driving the opposition in this country,” he said.

Shettima also called on political officeholders to defend the policies and achievements of the current administration as the next election cycle approaches.

“Excellencies, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, the political season is around the corner. We are all political actors. We have to sell our government. We have to stand behind our administration,” he said.

The former Governor of Borno State added that the ruling party is now in a stronger position than it was during the 2023 general election.

“Politically speaking, we are in a more comfortable position now than in 2023,” he said.

Shettima further dismissed claims that state governors were being pressured to defect to the ruling party.

“Nobody is coercing the governors of Rivers, Delta, Kano or any other state to join the APC. It is of their own volition because they have seen the light,” he added
