Enugu govt rescues banished teenager allegedly impregnated by father

Published

on

The Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development has rescued a 16-year-old girl following her public banishment from the Nenwe community over allegations of abuse involving her father.

The intervention followed a viral video showing the teenager and her father being forcefully marched out of the village by local elders. In the footage, community members were seen raining curses on the duo, who were draped in palm fronds—a traditional symbol of abomination in Igbo culture—with elders declaring their alleged actions a taboo in the land.

Reacting to the incident, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, confirmed that the ministry has placed the teenager in a safe shelter. Meanwhile, a law enforcement manhunt has been launched to apprehend the father.

Commissioner Enih assured the public that the survivor’s physical health, emotional well-being, and overall welfare remain the state’s top priorities. She noted that the girl will receive comprehensive psychosocial support to navigate her trauma and begin her recovery journey.

“No child should ever be blamed, rejected, or punished for being a victim of such abuse,” Mrs. Enih emphasized.

Israel opposition brands Netanyahu ‘toxic’ after Democrats seize US Congress

Published

on

Israeli opposition leaders have intensified their criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of damaging Israel’s relationship with the United States after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the US midterm elections.

The Democratic victory on Tuesday, November 3, is seen as a major setback for US President Donald Trump and could complicate Washington’s traditionally strong support for Israel, particularly amid growing opposition to the US-Israeli war with Iran and Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said the election results showed why Netanyahu could no longer remain in office, warning that his continued leadership threatened Israel’s security, democracy and international standing.

“It endangers our security, it jeopardizes our democracy, and it will ruin our standing on the global stage,” Lapid wrote on social media.

Lapid also accused Netanyahu of abandoning Israel’s longstanding bipartisan approach to Washington by openly aligning himself with Republicans. He recalled Netanyahu’s controversial 2015 address to the US Congress, in which he opposed then-President Barack Obama’s proposed nuclear agreement with Iran.

Meanwhile, opposition politician Yair Golan described Netanyahu as increasingly unpopular across the American political establishment, saying the election exposed “just how toxic Netanyahu has become” among Democrats and Republicans.

Golan warned that retaining Netanyahu and his far-right government could push Israel towards international sanctions, diplomatic isolation and a confrontation with the United States.

Another opposition figure, Gadi Eisenkot, pledged to restore Israel’s bipartisan relationship with Washington if he succeeded in forming the next government.

The criticism comes as Netanyahu faces political difficulties at home following Israel’s October 27 election, in which his bloc secured 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, falling short of the 61 needed for a majority. The opposition bloc secured 48 seats, while Arab-led parties won 19, leaving the country facing difficult coalition negotiations.

The Democratic takeover of Congress could also have significant consequences for Israel’s military and diplomatic relationship with Washington, as some Democratic lawmakers have increasingly questioned continued military assistance to the country.

Trump, who openly backed Netanyahu during Israel’s election campaign, also pledged to end the annual US military aid to Israel, worth about $3.8bn, arguing that doing so would remove an issue Democrats had used against his administration.

Despite the criticism, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) congratulated pro-Israel candidates who won their elections, saying 234 candidates it supported had secured victories.

Netanyahu had not immediately responded to the opposition’s latest criticism.

Bomb threats disrupt more than 15 flights across Europe, trigger emergency landings

Published

on

More than 15 passenger flights across Europe were disrupted by bomb threats on Thursday, November 5, forcing several aircraft to divert, make emergency landings or receive military escorts.

The incidents affected flights operated by Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Wizz Air, Finnair and LOT Polish Airlines, with alerts reported across countries including France, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Finland, Belgium and the Czech Republic. All affected aircraft landed safely, while inspections carried out so far have found no explosives or suspicious materials.

One of the major incidents involved an Aer Lingus flight travelling from Dublin to Rome, which was diverted to the Évreux military airbase in northern France after a bomb threat. The aircraft landed safely with 151 passengers and six crew members on board, while military bomb disposal teams examined it.

Three Ryanair flights bound for Sofia, Bulgaria, also received threats. Two, from Copenhagen and Madrid, landed in Sofia, while another from London was diverted to Plovdiv. Bulgarian authorities said inspections found no security issues and airport operations later returned to normal.

Italian fighter jets also escorted a Finnair flight from Helsinki to Rome after a threat was reported, while other aircraft were subjected to security checks in Prague, Vienna, Brussels and Milan.

Britain’s Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, described the incidents as “malicious hoax threats”, adding that authorities had established procedures for handling such warnings.

European Union Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas said it was too early to determine whether the incidents were connected, confirming that an EU aviation security information-sharing mechanism had been activated as investigations continued.

The latest disruption follows similar bomb alerts earlier in the week, which affected at least seven flights and briefly disrupted operations at an airport near Warsaw, Poland.

The incidents have raised concerns about possible coordinated attempts to disrupt European transport infrastructure amid wider geopolitical tensions. However, authorities have not identified those responsible or established a link between the threats and other reported disruptions across the continent.

Kebbi govt threatens legal action against Malami over land dispute, read details

Published

on

Kebbi State government has warned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in the state, Abubakar Malami, to stop what it alleged is a campaign of calumny against the state government and Governor Nasir Idris.

Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, stated this at a press conference at the Government House, in Birnin Kebbi. He exonerated the government from the demolition of a plot of land on the bypass road, allegedly belonging to an associate of Malami, as claimed by the opposition ADC.

He said the government neither owned the disputed land nor authorised anyone to demolish it, adding that the owner of the land, Alhaji Ummaru Gulumbe, had explained his side of the story regarding the dispute.

The commissioner wondered why the ADC governorship candidate and his party had dragged the government into the land dispute, and gone as far as claiming that their office complex was the property demolished by the government.

The government demanded that the former minister and his party retract what it described as false allegations and apologise or face legal action.

Yakubu accused Malami of using every opportunity to portray the Kebbi government in a bad light in a desperate bid to win the hearts of voters in the state.

“Let us make it clear to the former minister and his party that they must retract their false claims regarding the demolition of the land and their obnoxious statements against the government or face legal action,” he said.

The commissioner cautioned Malami’s kinsman, Wambam Koko, to desist from making unprovoked verbal attacks against Governor Idris.
