Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu might be arrested or restricted if he visits the United States.

It was reports that Ibrahim was addressing renewed discussions over allegations relating to Tinubu’s past in the United States and claims that he could face legal action during his planned participation in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Speaking via a statement, Ibrahim said the Nigerian Mission to the UN had not received any communication from the United States government indicating that Tinubu would be subjected to restrictions during the General Assembly.

Ibrahim stated that the protections enjoyed by representatives of UN member states are provided for under Section 11 of the 1947 UN-US Headquarters Agreement.

According to him, the agreement protects representatives of member states and their families from impediments while travelling to and from the UN headquarters district.

“Where a conviction cannot be secured in a sensitive criminal matter, the consequences could include substantial compensation.

“Social media cannot criminalise or arrest President Bola Tinubu, no matter how much the opposition invested in it; those efforts will only end as an exercise in futility. He has immunity from arrest in the US during UNGA,” the ambassador said.

According to him, the provision also covers UN officials, officials of specialised agencies and persons invited to the headquarters district for official business.

Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri has debunked reports claiming she died, assuring fans that she is alive, safe and was not involved in any accident.

Kadiri addressed the reports in a video shared on social media, where she pleaded with her followers to report any pages spreading the false information.

“I AM ALIVE!!! Please help me report. Please, I’m begging you, help me report it,” she said.

The mother of two expressed sadness over what she described as the disturbing lengths some people go to on social media to hurt others and wish death on them.

Kadiri said she has chosen to stay out of other people’s affairs and urged those behind the reports to leave her alone.

“I stay on my lane. Leave me alone. I beg you all. It’s really becoming tiring and sad,” she added.

The actress’ clarification comes amid the continued spread of false death reports about public figures on social media, often causing unnecessary panic among fans and family members.

US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that his push to attach his name to major projects and landmarks in Washington, D.C., is partly driven by his belief that no one else will do so after he leaves office.

In an interview with New York Magazine, Trump agreed with Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff’s earlier suggestion that he appeared to be building monuments to himself because others would not do it for him.

“That’s true,” Trump told journalist Ben Terris. “Nobody will do it once I’m gone. When I leave here, nobody will.”

Trump has embarked on an extensive series of construction and redevelopment projects around the US capital, seeking to leave a lasting mark on the city before the end of his presidency.

Among the projects attracting controversy are plans involving a large ballroom at the White House, changes to the Kennedy Centre, renovations around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and the redevelopment of Washington’s golf course.

Several of Trump’s efforts have faced legal challenges, including his attempt to rename the Kennedy Centre and its campus after himself.

The moves have fuelled debate over the president’s efforts to shape Washington’s landmarks and cement his personal legacy while in office.
