Ajayi, Ochonogor, Olatoye Shine On Day One Of AFN National Trials In Lagos

Published

on

Kanyisola Ajayi, Prestina Ochonogor, and Sade Olatoye stole the spotlight on Friday as the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials kicked off at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

The event which was originally billed for Abeokuta, was relocated to Lagos at the last minute and now serves as the official qualification meet for Nigerian athletes eyeing a spot at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.

Ajayi, widely regarded as Nigeria’s current sprint sensation, lived up to his reputation by dominating heat one of the men’s 100m with a strong 10.05s finish on Friday.

However, the fastest time of the day came from Israel Okon, who stunned the crowd with a new personal best of 10.03s to win heat two. Fakorede Nicholas also set a personal best of 10.06s to top heat three.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic finalist Enoch Adegoke showed his experience in heat four, clocking 10.14s for the win. Alaba Akintola followed with a 10.08s performance in heat five, while Olaolu Olatunde shaved off time from his lifetime best to take heat six in 10.13s. Other heat winners included Seye Ogunlewe (10.18s), Temitope Bello, and John Caleb.

In the women’s 100m heats, 18-year-old Prestina Ochonogor continued her breakout season with an 11.48s win in heat one, holding off challenges from Precious Nzeakor and Faith Osamuyi, who finished second and third, respectively.

On the field, Chioma Onyekwere secured her third national title in the women’s discus with a consistent series that culminated in victory ahead of Obiageri Amaechi, who settled for second place with a 59.39m throw. Onyekwere’s triumph marked her third win in five national championship appearances.

Tobi Amusan Qualifies For 2026 Diamond League Final, Eyes Fourth Title

Published

on

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has qualified for the 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final after another impressive campaign in the women’s 100m hurdles.

The world record holder secured her place in the season-ending championship with 28 points from five Diamond League meetings. The final will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on September 4 and 5.

Tobi Amusan sits second in the standings behind American Masai Russell, who leads with 32 points.

Both athletes are still expected to compete in the remaining meetings in London, Lausanne, Silesia and Zurich before the battle for the Diamond League crown.

Russell remains the fastest woman in the event this season after posting 12.14 seconds. In comparison, Amusan’s season’s best of 12.28 seconds has been equalled three times during the campaign.

The Brussels final is set to reignite one of the sport’s biggest rivalries as Amusan bids to reclaim the title she won in three straight seasons from 2021 to 2023. A victory would hand the Nigerian a fourth Diamond League trophy.

Tobi Amusan also heads into the final as the women’s 100m hurdles world record holder.

She set the stunning mark of 12.12 seconds during her memorable run to the world title in Eugene four years ago, a performance that remains the benchmark in the event.

SEE FULL LIST: Unai Simón joins World Cup clean-sheet greats as Barthez, Shilton remain joint leaders

Published

on

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón has climbed into joint third place on FIFA’s all-time list of goalkeepers with the most clean sheets at the FIFA World Cup following Spain’s run to the 2026 final.

According to FIFA’s updated rankings after the semi-finals on Wednesday, Simón has kept eight clean sheets in 11 World Cup appearances, matching the records of Jan Jongbloed, Emerson Leão, Sepp Maier, Taffarel, Thibaut Courtois and Hugo Lloris.

FIFA’s all-time rankings continue to be led jointly by France’s Fabien Barthez and England’s Peter Shilton, who each recorded 10 clean sheets in 17 World Cup appearances.

Barthez | FIFA

Barthez achieved five shutouts during France’s triumphant 1998 campaign, one in 2002 and four in 2006, while Shilton registered four clean sheets in 1982, three in 1986 and three more in 1990.

England’s Peter Shilton | FIFA

Simón’s tally has been boosted by Spain’s 2026 campaign, during which he has kept six clean sheets in seven matches, having previously recorded two at the 2022 World Cup.

Behind the joint leaders, Brazil’s Alisson, Gilmar, Spain’s Iker Casillas, Uruguay’s Fernando Muslera and Germany’s Manuel Neuer are tied for 10th place with seven clean sheets each.

FIFA’s updated rankings were published after Spain’s 2-0 victory over France in the 2026 World Cup semi-final, with Simón conceding only four goals across his 11 World Cup appearances for a goals-conceded average of 0.36 per game, the best among the goalkeepers in the top tier of the rankings.

Here are the rankings:

2026 World Cup: 10 biggest VAR controversies so far

Published

on

Video Assistant Referee decisions have continued to spark debate at the 2026 World Cup, with several calls dividing players, coaches and fans across the tournament’s group stage and knockout rounds.

This is the third World Cup to feature VAR since its introduction, and officials have been granted extra powers this time around, including the ability to issue yellow cards in cases of mistaken identity.

Sports website Planet Football has now ranked the ten VAR incidents it considers the tournament’s most controversial so far.

10. Argentina v Egypt

Egypt saw a second goal chalked off by VAR for a foul earlier in the buildup after leading Argentina 2-0. Planet Football rated the call correct but noted Egypt’s frustration at how far back in the passage of play the offence was picked up, especially after the North Africans were denied a possible penalty shortly before conceding the winner. Egypt reportedly lodged a formal complaint with FIFA, with coach Hossam Hassan alleging bias in the officiating.

9. England v Ghana

Ghana were denied a penalty in a goalless draw after Ezri Konsa brought down Prince Adu inside the box. Planet Football described Konsa’s challenge as careless and potentially reckless, and one Ghana felt should have been punished.

8. Brazil v Scotland

Vinicius Junior had what would have been Brazil’s second goal ruled out for what Planet Football called the faintest of fouls on Jack Hendry. Brazil went on to win regardless.

7. Colombia v Portugal

Davinson Sanchez’s goal for Colombia was ruled out for offside by a matter of millimetres after a VAR review, despite appearing onside in real time. Former England striker Wayne Rooney criticised the decision on BBC punditry duty, saying: “It’s onside, I don’t care what they’re telling me.”

6. Ecuador v Germany

Germany were allowed to keep a goal that Planet Football argued deserved a VAR review, after Aleksandar Pavlovic caught Ecuador’s Pedro Vite in the face while going for the ball in the buildup.

5. Germany v Paraguay

Germany had a goal by Jonathan Tah disallowed in their round of 32 exit to Paraguay after VAR ruled that Waldemar Anton had held Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill unfairly at the corner. Planet Football called the decision soft, noting Gill was back on his feet by the time the header came in.

4. Portugal v Croatia

Croatia had a stoppage-time equaliser by Josko Gvardiol ruled out for offside, after officials determined Igor Matanovic’s touch on the ball, rather than a deflection off a Portugal defender, kept Mario Pasalic onside in the buildup — a decision Planet Football said divided opinion despite being consistent with the letter of the law.

3. France v Senegal

France were denied what Planet Football described as a clear penalty after Sadio Mane appeared to foul Kylian Mbappe without touching the ball. The referee not only upheld his no-penalty call after a VAR review but also overturned an earlier corner in France’s favour, ruling it should have been a goal kick.

2. USA v Bosnia and Herzegovina

USA striker Folarin Balogun was sent off following a VAR review for a challenge on Tarik Muharemovic that Planet Football said appeared to carry little real intent, in an incident that drew comment from United States President Donald Trump. Balogun’s suspension for the USA’s next fixture was later overturned.

1. Argentina v Algeria

Lionel Messi avoided a red card despite a challenge on Aissa Mandi that Planet Football said looked, by the letter of the law, worthy of a dismissal. VAR did not recommend a review, and the referee’s decision to award only a free-kick stood — topping the list of the tournament’s biggest VAR controversies.
