The Chief Magistrate court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, has remanded a 34-year-old lady, Deborah Ayeni, in prison for allegedly a new baby from a hospital in the state.

LIB reported that the suspect gained access to the maternity ward of Okeyimi Healthcare Centre in Ado-Ekiti on August 4, 2025 and stole the newborn baby.

She was subsequently arrested by the police after a discreet investigation.

The baby was recovered from her and reunited with the parents, Mustapha Aliyu and Salmatu Lawal.

During interrogation, Ayeni confessed to carrying out the criminal act to deceive her United Kingdom-based husband that she delivered a new baby.

She claimed that her decision to steal the baby was to cover up her lies about the fake pregnancy since she had already collected a lot of money from her husband.

The police prosecutor, Akinwale Oriyomi, informed the court that there is probable cause to order the remand of the defendant at the Correctional Service, Ado-Ekiti, who is reasonably suspected to have committed the offence.

The prosecutor pointed out that the offence is punishable under Section 292 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021 within Ado-Ekiti Magisterial District and requested that the application be granted.

He noted that the duplicate case file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

The defendant was represented by Stephen Ademuwagun.

The Chief Magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, granted the application for her remand and adjourned the case till September 12, 2025, for mention.

N36m fraud: Suspected fake Ondo cocoa farmer to face trial

Published

on

The Ondo State Police Command said it would arraign a suspect, Ilegbami Jacob, for allegedly falsely presenting himself as a cocoa farmer to obtain the sum of N36m from one Sunday Adegboyo, with a promise to supply 5.5 tons of cocoa beans, which he failed to deliver.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

Ayanlade noted that the suspect was arrested following a petition from the victim, who narrated that the suspect had failed to deliver on their agreement.

Following the petition, Ayanlade noted that police operatives tracked the suspect to his hideout in Akure, the state capital, after he had fled from the victim.

Ayanlade added, “Investigation revealed that in July 2025, the complainant entered into a business agreement with the suspect, who falsely presented himself as a cocoa merchant. Under this guise, he collected N36m from the victim with a promise to supply 5.56 tons of cocoa beans, but failed to deliver and subsequently absconded to an unknown destination, giving false assurances that the goods would be supplied from Taraba State.

“Leveraging technology and the expertise of the command’s Scorpion Squad, operatives identified and traced the suspect to his hideout in Akure, where he was arrested.”

He noted that the suspect would be charged in court upon the conclusion of an ongoing investigation, while assuring the command’s commitment to cracking down on criminal elements.

“The suspect is in custody and will be charged in court upon conclusion of the investigation.

“While appreciating the IG for his unwavering support and transformative leadership, the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Adebowale Lawal, assures residents that the command remains steadfast in dismantling criminal networks and safeguarding legitimate business interests across the State.

“He further advises business owners and investors to always verify the identities and credibility of partners before engaging in large financial transactions, as vigilance remains the first line of defence against fraud,” Ayanlade concluded.

PUNCH Metro reported a similar incident on May 15 that a Lagos Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja ordered the remand of a businessman, Moruf Gbadamosi, in prison custody for allegedly obtaining over N23m, under false pretence.

Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe remanded him after he was arraigned before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission alongside his company, Greenbil Mega Ocean Limited.

At least three Nigerians have been arrested in the Mwaliko Estate, Mwea Town, Kenya, on allegations of cyber fraud.

A report by Tuko News, a Kenyan digital news platform, revealed that the suspects were apprehended by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Wednesday.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Peter Chukwujekwu, Alazor Chukulute Sunday, and Nnalue Chiagozie Samwe.

According to the report on Thursday, the trio were flushed out of their apartment after members of the public raised concerns about suspicious late-night activities in the building.

The DCI confirmed the arrests, stating that they occurred during “a multi-agency raid targeting a cyber fraud ring” in the area.

The report quoted the DCI as saying: “Three Nigerian nationals nabbed in Kirinyaga multi-agency raid. A well-coordinated multi-agency raid in Mwaliko Estate within Mwea town has blown the lid off a suspected cyber fraud ring operated by three Nigerian nationals.”

The suspects, who claimed to be running an online business, were said to be living in Kenya illegally and lacked valid work permits.

This arrest is part of a broader trend of Nigerians being apprehended abroad for various criminal activities, including cyber fraud, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.

In June 2023, Kenyan police arrested 19 Nigerians in Nairobi for engaging in electronic fraud targeting Kenyans.

According to the DCI, the men, aged between 19 and 33, used social media to initiate their scam, swindling unsuspecting Kenyans under the guise of offering goods deliveries from abroad.

“The fraudsters start by befriending you on social media (Facebook), and once you accept the friend request, they initiate a friendly chat that promises the victim goodies to be sent through DHL at the airport,” the DCI explained.
