Former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, escaped injury yesterday, September 1, after his convoy was attacked by suspected political thugs in Birnin Kebbi.

Malami was returning after paying a condolence visit to a family in the state capital when the assailants attacked his convoy, destroying 10 vehicles in the convoy and leaving several of his supporters injured during the attack.

Malami who is a leader in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi, described the attack as “politically motivated”.

He said;

““I was in Birnin Kebbi solely to pay condolences to families who lost their loved ones. I was away, not for political campaign. It’s painful and unfortunate. Some thugs emerged from the APC state headquarters, armed with weapons and stones, and attacked our convoy, destroying vehicles and injuring our supporters.”

Malami further claimed said there would be “no retreat, no surrender” in politics in Kebbi.

Meanwhile, the APC party in the state has denied any involvement in the attack.

There was tension in the Mabushi area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Wednesday after three suspected touts, locally known as agbero, linked to the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), were set ablaze by an angry mob for allegedly causing the d3aths of a man, his wife, and their son.

According to an eyewitness, the tragic incident occurred when the touts allegedly dragged the car steering from the driver of the family’s car while attempting to extort money, leading to a fatal accident on the Mabushi Bridge.

The entire family reportedly d!ed on the spot.

A video sighted online shows the three suspects lying on the ground before an unidentified individual doused them with petrol and set them on fire.

“This is what Amac agberos have caused here in Abuja. They are causing a lot of harm. It’s high time we did something about it. Seriously. Both families died because of agbero. Imagine, they chased this man, entered his car, and dragged the steering from his hand. The man died, his wife died, and his son died. The FCT Minister needs to take action. Amac agberos must leave Abuja,” the witness said.

PHOTOS: EFCC declares ex-Abia commissioner and another wanted over alleged fraud

Published

on

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared a former Abia State Government commissioner, Christopher Enweremadu, and Abia resident Fortune Ozoemela wanted over allegations of criminal conspiracy, diversion of public funds, theft, and money laundering.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale made the announcement in a public notice posted on the commission’s website on Wednesday, September 3. Enweremadu served as commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters under former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu. His last known address was listed as the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Umuahia, Abia State.

Ozoemela, 40, is an indigene of Abia State with a last known address at 122 Ozoemila’s Compound, Amakama Olokoro, Umuahia. Oyewale urged anyone with information on their whereabouts to contact any EFCC zonal office, including locations in Ibadan, Uyo, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Benin, Makurdi, Kaduna, Ilorin, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Gombe, Port Harcourt, or Abuja.

The EFCC notice did not provide specific details of the transactions linked to Enweremadu. However, he is connected to an investigation into the management of funds allocated to Abia’s 17 local government councils.

In December 2024, a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja ordered a probe into allocations to the councils between 2019 and 2023 and directed the EFCC to submit its findings. The court also ordered the seizure of international passports belonging to Enweremadu, former aide Erondu Uchenna Erondu, and Joy Nwanju, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

The court action followed an ex parte application by an activist who alleged that billions of naira intended for Abia’s local government councils were diverted under the supervision of the officials.
