Ex-soldiers resume protest over unpaid benefits

Published

on

A group of discharged Nigerian soldiers on Thursday resumed protests in Abuja, demanding the payment of their entitlements.

The ex-soldiers called off their protest on August 4, after a meeting with officials of the Ministries of Defence and Finance, who assured them that their outstanding entitlements would be paid by August 10.

The ex-servicemen, who converged on the Ministry of Finance headquarters in the nation’s capital, accused the authorities of neglect and failure to honour promises made after their meeting last month.

One of the protesters, identified as Mama G, said they were forced to return to the streets after previous assurances yielded no results.

“We are here because the promises made to us were never fulfilled. We had no choice but to return to the streets. This time around, the protest will be massive”, Mama G said.

This is not the first time the group has demonstrated. In recent years, retired soldiers have repeatedly taken to the streets in Abuja and other cities over what they describe as unfair treatment and neglect.

The Ministry of Defence, Defence Headquarters and Military Pension Board have yet to issue an official response as of the time of filing this report.

on

A 29-year-old woman identified as Chisom Okonkwo has been arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Enugu after accusing her husband, Ozioma Okonkwo, of sexually assaulting their two daughters.

The incident reportedly happened during a marital dispute in August 2024 at Emene, Enugu, Leadership reported.

According to the charge sheet, Chisom allegedly went public with the accusation, claiming her husband defiled their 2-year-old and 5-year-old daughters. The police said the allegation damaged the man’s reputation and exposed him to ridicule.

Ozioma was arrested on October 25, 2025, based on the report. However, after medical examinations were carried out on the children, no evidence of abuse was found. He was later released.

The police also accused Chisom of providing false information to detectives at the State Intelligence Department.

The case is being treated under Sections 325 and 154 of the Criminal Code of Enugu State, which deal with defamation and giving false information to law enforcement.

As of now, the court has not released details of her plea or possible bail conditions.

The situation has sparked mixed reactions online, with many calling for thorough investigation in cases involving children, to avoid both false accusations and ignored abuse.

Published

on

The Edo State Special Security Squad, code-named “Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers”, on Wednesday, has disclosed that cultism has significantly reduced in the State since the assumption into office of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The squad’s coordinator, Noah Idemudia, also commended Governor Okpebholo for his outstanding leadership and achievements as he marks one year in office.

In a statement on Wednesday by Idemudia, the team congratulated the governor on his first anniversary, noting that his administration’s Shine Agenda has significantly improved peace, development, and public safety across the state.

Idemudia highlighted the noticeable decline in cult-related activities in Edo State as one of the significant indicators of the government’s success in addressing security challenges.

He further attributed this progress to the governor’s unwavering support for security agencies and his proactive approach to governance.

“The SHINE Agenda reflects a divine vision, meeting its targets and actively promoting peace and growth within our communities,” Idemudia said. “The decline in cult activism in Edo State is a testament to the governor’s commitment to effective governance.”

The security squad also reaffirmed its partnership with the Okpebholo administration in maintaining law and order through “Operation Flush out Cultists and Kidnappers”, an initiative designed to curb violent crimes and ensure a safer environment for residents.

As Governor Okpebholo celebrates one year in office, stakeholders in the security sector have continued to commend his government’s focus on community safety, development and good governance.

“Together, we will continue to safeguard our communities and nurture a safer Edo State for all,” the statement said.
