PHOTOS: Libya transfers 18 Nigerian migrants from Sirte to Sabha ahead of repatriation

Authorities in Libya have moved 18 undocumented Nigerian migrants from the Sirte Immigration Detention Center to the southern city of Sabha, where they are expected to be repatriated.

The transfer took place on Monday, September 15, under the supervision of the Libyan Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM).

This was disclosed in a statement by Migrant Rescue Watch, a humanitarian monitoring group.

According to the group, the migrants were transported by road in a security-controlled convoy, marking part of Libya’s broader strategy to facilitate the return of foreign nationals without legal status.

Libya remains a major departure point for migrants seeking to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

The country’s detention centers often hold large numbers of undocumented migrants pending deportation or repatriation.

In recent years, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has partnered with Libyan authorities to arrange voluntary repatriation flights, offering migrants the option to return to their countries of origin.

Attempted Coup in Benin Republic as military attacks President Talon’s residence, seizes national TV

Published

Reports from Beninese media indicate that a coup attempt is underway in Cotonou following an attack on President Patrice Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo neighbourhood early Sunday, December 7, 2025.

According to the outlet TchadOne, the assault was carried out by a group of soldiers led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri.

The situation escalated later in the morning when Tigri appeared on national television, reported to be under military control, declaring himself “chairman of the military re-establishment committee.”

Cotonou remains tense, with eyewitness reports of troop deployments around key strategic locations. No official reaction has been issued by President Talon or his administration regarding the attacks.

The development adds to a growing pattern of political instability in West Africa.

TchadOne reports that minute-by-minute updates will follow as the situation in Benin evolves.

ECOWAS condemns attempted coup in Benin, issues warning

Published

The ECOWAS Commission has expressed deep concern over reports of an attempted military takeover in Benin, describing the development as a grave and unacceptable assault on the democratic will of the people.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, ECOWAS condemned the unconstitutional action and called for the full respect of the country’s Constitution.

The Commission also commended the efforts of the government and the Republican Army in bringing the situation under control.

ECOWAS warned that the leaders of the plot, both individually and collectively, would be held responsible for any loss of life or property resulting from their actions.

The Commission further affirmed that it would support the government and people of Benin in all necessary ways, including the potential deployment of the regional standby force, to defend the Constitution and territorial integrity of the country.
