Gunmen have killed two persons, injured one and set houses ablaze in fresh attacks on Berom communities in Plateau State.

It was gathered that the attacks occurred on Tuesday night and were reported in at least four locations, including Gwa-Wereng Rim, Kyeng Village in Bachi District, Dorong and Jol Village.

The Berom Youth Moulders-Association confirmed the killings in a statement on Wednesday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong.

The association said gunmen attacked Gwa-Wereng Rim, killing Bulus Mwagwong, popularly known as Dikko, while his cousin, Yakubu, was fatally injured.

The statement added that “47-year-old Stephen Dachollom Kaze was also killed by suspected attackers at Kyeng Village, Bachi District, at about 8:30 p.m.”

A resident of the affected area, Lyop Gabriel, said the attack at Gwa-Wereng Rim “occurred at about 9:30 p.m., when gunmen reportedly invaded the community and opened fire on residents.”

According to the BYM statement, “another attack was recorded at Dorong, where attackers allegedly set houses ablaze, causing destruction of property and forcing residents to flee in fear.”

At Jol Village, the association said “armed attackers reportedly engaged local vigilantes in an exchange of gunfire, further heightening tension in the community.”

The National President of the BYM, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, who also confirmed the killings, condemned the attacks, describing them as “a disturbing threat to the lives, livelihoods and safety of rural communities.”

The association expressed concern over what it described as the increasing frequency of attacks on communities, particularly farmers and other residents who depend on their farmlands for their livelihoods.

BYM “called on security agencies to immediately strengthen their presence in vulnerable communities, intensify surveillance and pursue those responsible for the attacks.”

It also urged the security agencies “to ensure that perpetrators of the killings and destruction were arrested and brought to justice.”

The association further appealed to the Plateau State Government and other relevant authorities “to provide immediate assistance to affected families and communities, particularly those who lost loved ones, homes and other property in the attacks.”

BYM “extended its condolences to the families of Mwagwong and Kaze, while wishing Yakubu a speedy recovery.”

The association “urged residents to remain vigilant, peaceful and united, stressing that concerted efforts were required to prevent further escalation of violence in affected communities.”

It “called for urgent and decisive security action to protect lives and property and restore confidence among residents of the affected communities.”

Contacted, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, was not immediately available for comment on the killings, as his phone indicated that it was switched off.

The Lagos State Police Command has declared two men wanted in connection with conspiracy and alleged murder of a woman in the Ikoyi area of the state.

The command identified the suspects as 32-year-old Folawiyo Alagbado and 33-year-old Ajibola Obateru, both of whom it said had their last known addresses in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The police made this known in bulletins posted on the command’s X handle on Wednesday.

According to the bulletins, the suspects allegedly conspired with others to attack the victim, killed her and took away her body and personal belongings.

The police said the incident occurred in the Ikoyi axis of Lagos.

The bulletin on Alagbado stated, “The suspect conspired with others to attack the victim, allegedly killed her and made away with her body to an unknown location.

“The victim’s belongings were also stolen by the fleeing suspect and his cohorts.

“DESCRIPTION: Tribe: Yoruba, Age: 32, Height: Average, Face: Oval, Nose: Wide, Mouth: Long Wide, Lips: Medium, Eyes Colour: White, Complexion: Dark Colour, Chin: Round, Hair: Normal, Forehead: Smooth, Dress: Decent. Last Known Address: Ibadan, Oyo State.”

The police gave Obateru’s description as: “Tribe: Yoruba, Age: 33, Height: 5.9ft, Build: Thin, Face: Oval, Nose: Long, Mouth: Small, Lips: Thin, Eyes Colour: Black, Complexion: Fair, Chin: Pointed, Hair: Black Thick, Head: High, Forehead: High, Habits and Mannerisms: Appear Gentle, Dress: Decent. Last Known Address: Ibadan, Oyo State.”

The command urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of either suspect to report to the nearest police station or the Office of the Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, Musiliu Smith Street, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

The police also provided 08038843816 as a contact number for information that could lead to the suspects’ arrest.

The command advised members of the public who encounter the suspects not to take the law into their own hands but to alert the police.

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of nine bodies on the Wawa-Lumma road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The victims were suspected to have been killed by bandits while travelling on the road.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Minna that a team of police and military personnel was dispatched to evacuate the bodies after receiving the information on Tuesday.

He said clearance operations had been intensified to secure the area from any security threat.

“Police and military tactical teams were mobilised to the scene; the bodies recovered, while clearance operation was intensified to secure the area,” he said.

The development came days after security agencies rescued 308 persons abducted in separate attacks in Kwara and Niger states.

Of the 308 rescued victims, 163 were abducted from Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, while 145 others were kidnapped in a separate attack in Niger State.

The victims were rescued from the Kainji Lake National Park forest in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State during a coordinated, intelligence-led operation involving the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, the Armed Forces, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force.
