Groups deploy 687 monitors for Anambra poll

Published

on

An election monitoring group, Yiaga Africa, said no fewer than 687 observers would be deployed to ensure effective monitoring of the Anambra State governorship election on Saturday.

The Chair of the 2025 Anambra Election Mission, Yiaga Africa, Dr Asmau Maikudi, disclosed this in its pre-election press conference in Awka, on Thursday.

Maikudi said areas to focus on during the monitoring exercise include the Independent National Electoral Commissionโ€™s preparatory activities, election logistics management, election security, low voter enthusiasm and anticipated low voter turnout.

She added that efficiency test, integrity test and impartiality tests are the hallmarks of the election.

The pre-election press conference in Awka, titled โ€œAnambra 2025: Efficiency, integrity and impartiality will make or mar the electionโ€, was jointly addressed by Maikudi and the Executive Director, Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo.

According to Maikudi, Yiaga Africa has identified six local government areas, Orumba North, Orumba South, Ogbaru, Ihiala, Nnewi South and Aguata, as areas with possible security threats.

According to her, a pre-election observation highlighted that the mentioned LGAs are considered โ€œpotential hotspotsโ€, with some communities under threat from non-state armed groups that would require more deliberate and intelligence-informed deployment of security personnel.

She said, โ€œYiaga Africa is deploying โ€˜Watching the Voteโ€™ as part of a broader civil society election observation hub supported by the European Union under the EU Support for Democratic Governance Project. The Election Observation Hub comprises organisations such as Yiaga Africa, The Kukah Centre, International Press Centre, Centre for Media and Society, Nigeria Women Trust Fund, ElectHER and TAF Africa.

โ€œCumulatively, the Hub is deploying 687 observers across Anambra State, working in coordinated clusters that cover election integrity and results verification, disability inclusion, gender participation, peacebuilding, media and misinformation tracking, logistics observation, and real-time data reporting.

โ€œAhead of the governorship election, the Election Observation Hub issued a Joint Pre-Election Assessment Report. The report analysed the political climate, security risks, media environment, and levels of gender and disability inclusion and offered 66 actionable recommendations to strengthen electoral credibility, voter access, and institutional preparedness.

โ€œNotably, the pre-election observation highlighted possible security threats in Orumba North, Orumba South, Ogbaru, Thiala, Newi South and Aguata.

โ€œThese LGAs are considered potential hotspots, with some communities under threat from non-state armed groups that would require more deliberate and intelligence-informed deployment.

โ€œThe pre-election environment has remained relatively passive, with voters almost disinterested in participating in voter engagement activities. Specifically, narratives indicating the lack of trust in the electoral process and electoral outcomes are prevalent across different communities in the state.

โ€œThis is further observed with the low number of new registrants and the rate of Permanent votersโ€™ card collection. Yiaga Africa also observed in its engagement across the LGAs that a significant number of young people within the voting age were disinterested in registering as voters or participating in the election.โ€

According to Maikudi, given this trend and Anambraโ€™s historical record of low voter turnout, there are serious concerns that the election may witness turnout rates below 20 per cent, further weakening electoral legitimacy.

She further outlined three critical benchmarks that will shape the credibility of the electoral process, such as efficiency of logistics, integrity in electoral procedures, and impartiality of security agencies.

2026: Iโ€™m cruising to victory, Adeleke boasts

Published

on

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has expressed confidence that the internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party at the national level will not hinder his bid for a second term, declaring that he is โ€œcruising to victoryโ€ ahead of the August 8, 2026 governorship election.

Adeleke stated this in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, and obtained in Osogbo on Wednesday.

He described the lingering disagreements as a โ€œfamily affairโ€ that would soon be resolved, urging party members to remain focused and united.

โ€œI urge all members of our party, the PDP, to remain calm and be steadfast. We are cruising to victory next year and we must remain committed to ensuring that we rebuild this party for renewed landslide victory,โ€ Adeleke said.

He continued:โ€œThe ongoing disagreement within the party at the national level is a family affair and I want to assure all members both at the state and national level that it will soon be resolved.

All the stakeholders at the national level have the partyโ€™s progress and success at heart and are all looking at ways to resolve the crisis as soon as possible.โ€

The governor also directed PDP leaders across local governments and wards to intensify mobilisation ahead of the poll, insisting that the party remains the strongest force in the state.

โ€œI hereby direct all party leaders across wards and local governments to begin massive mobilisation for our party ahead of the 2026 governorship election. We are the party to beat and our party will come out stronger and better.โ€

Last week, after appearing before the PDP Governorship Screening Committee in Abuja, Adeleke insisted no candidate could defeat him in Osun.

โ€œThe people of Osun will choose me again because I have performed excellently. I introduced what I call fact-checking; anyone can go back and verify what is happening in Osun State.

We are in a technology-driven era; you can simply Google it and confirm that we are doing well.

I am very confident that I will win. If I could defeat an incumbent before, now that I am the governor, it will be even easier. In less than two years, we have achieved unprecedented progress in Osun State. I am so confident nobody can defeat us,โ€ he declared.

His remarks come amid deepening turmoil in the PDP, as rival factions suspend top officials.

A faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, recently announced the suspension of National Chairman Umar Damagum and five other National Working Committee members. This followed an earlier announcement by the Damagum-led NWC suspending Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), and two others.

At a briefing in Abuja on Saturday, Anyanwuโ€”speaking for the factional NWCโ€”named Mohammed Abdulrahman, the National Vice Chairman (North Central), as Acting National Chairman.

He said, โ€œUnfortunately, some people may say that the National Secretary, National Organising Secretary, who has the responsibility of monitoring everything, and the National Legal Adviser, who is responsible for all legal issues, were purportedly suspended.

On this note, we decided to suspend the National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Ilya Damagum, for incompetence, financial misconduct, and disregard for court judgment. He has been suspended for one month and should face the Disciplinary Committee.

Secondly, we also suspended the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, for issuing statements without the partyโ€™s approval, and the Deputy National Vice Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, has also been suspended.โ€

Power showdown: Wike bloc defiant as PDP BoT insists on convention

Published

on

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party is far from over as the faction loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, insisted that the national convention of the party slated for Ibadan, the Oyo State capital between November 15 and 16, will not hold.

Despite the position of the partyโ€™s Board of Trustees earlier on Wednesday, urging the National Working Committee to go ahead with the convention, the group led by the factional Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the event would not hold.

The national secretariat of the party remained sealed as the two factions resorted to the use of other facilities to run their respective groups.

Earlier on Wednesday, the BoT of the PDP, aware of the status of the secretariat, met at the Bauchi State Governorโ€™s Lodge, Abuja.

It was an event attended by the National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum alongside the BoT chairman, Adolphus Wabara, ex-Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Makarfi, and other party chieftains.

Similarly, Abdulrahman and his group met at the Wuye private office of embattled party secretary Samuel Anyanwu to brief the media about their activities since his emergence earlier in the week.

Abdulrahman said his group had gotten the Certified True Copy of Justice James Omotoshoโ€™s ruling, which last week put the convention on hold.

He said, โ€œThe national leadership of the PDP, under my humble self, in collaboration with our National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, hereby formally inform the Nigerian public that we have received the Certified True Copy of the recent judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, delivered by Honourable Justice Omotosho in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025.

โ€œWe are pleased to confirm that our esteemed National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN, has provided a thorough legal opinion on the implications of the judgment.

โ€œIn strict adherence to due process and our commitment to fairness, we have filed an appeal before the Court of Appeal to seek further judicial clarification and interpretation in the overall interest of our party, our members and Nigerian democracy.

โ€œConsequently, having filed an appeal and in line with our responsibility to uphold the rule of law in the PDP, we hereby suspend and cancel the proposed Ibadan national convention pending the decision of the Court of Appeal. Any continuation with the proposed convention at this time would amount to a violation of the rule of law and shall not be condoned.โ€

He noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission, a party to the suit, โ€œis fully aware of the judgment of the Federal High court.โ€

โ€œWe have deemed it necessary and responsible to formally communicate our position to the commission. Accordingly, we have notified INEC to suspend the national convention in strict compliance with the directive contained in the judgement,โ€ he added.

He further argued that the ex parte order granted by Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court, cannot override the earlier ruling of Justice Omotosho.

โ€œWe are also aware of an ex parte order recently issued by a High Court in Oyo State. While we await the Certrfied True Copy of the said order, we reiterate that an ex parte order cannot override a subsisting judgment of the Federal High Court.

โ€œWe shall continue to act only in accordance with valid judicial authority and the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

โ€œAs a responsible, law-abiding, and democratic institution, the PDP remains unwavering in its commitment to the rule of law, constitutional governance, and internal party democracy.

โ€œOur actions will continue to be guided by legal advice, by respect for our members, and by our duty to protect the integnty of our party,โ€ he added.

He assured Nigerians of the oneness of the PDP as one indivisible family despite its current travails.

โ€˜Convention must holdโ€™

However, the Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party said it was focused on mobilising party members ahead of its national convention in Ibadan and will not be distracted by โ€œcharlatans and political comedians.โ€

The Oyo PDP is loyal to the state governor, Seyi Makinde, who fell apart with Wike following the lingering crisis in the party.

Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Micheal Ogunsina, speaking with The PUNCH on Wednesday, dismissed those he described as suspended party members masquerading as an alternative faction.

Ogunsina said the PDP remained united under the leadership of Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.

He said, โ€œWe must stop listening to charlatans and political comedians. PDP is one, and the National Chairman is Umar Damagum. We should not give life to suspended national working committee members. Their words hold no water, and they are wasting their time.โ€

He said the NWC, BoT and other organs of the party were working towards the success of the convention in Ibadan next week.

โ€œIt is also critical to note that there is no division within our rank,โ€ he added. โ€œThe NWC, BOT and all other organs of the party are working very hard to ensure that the national convention holds.โ€

He expressed confidence that INEC would comply with Mondayโ€™s Oyo High Court order by Justice Akintola that the PDP and Damagum should proceed with the Ibadan convention.

He also admonished all aggrieved members of the party to be โ€œhumble with their excesses.โ€

โ€œThose who are aggrieved in the party must understand that if the party leadership under Damagum and Wabara will be magnanimous in handling their misdemeanours, they must be humble with their excesses,โ€ he stressed.

PDP secretariat sealed

Meanwhile, Anyanwu has given reasons why the gate to the national secretariat of the party remained locked.

On Monday, Abdulrahman, accompanied by Anyanwu and a team of policemen, took over the Wadata Plaza, where Abdulrahman attributed his emergence to the workings of God and promised to reposition the party.

The secretariat has remained sealed since Monday with Anyanwu insisting itโ€™s a move to protect workers in Wadata Plaza.

โ€œWhen I arrived at the office to do my normal job (Monday), I was almost attacked by hoodlums.

โ€œUnder the directives and instructions of Umar Damagu, the former PDP chairman, I heard them clearly asking the boys to attack. If not for the intervention of the police, most of the staff (members) would have been murdered,โ€ Anyanwu said.

โ€œAnd for that reason, as the custodian of the office, as the secretary, I asked everybody to stay away. Let us find a lasting solution to make the place safer for our people to do their jobs.โ€

Like Abdulrahman, Anyanwu said the Ibadan convention would not hold.

He stated, โ€œThe judgment of the Federal High Court supersedes the ex parte order by the Oyo court.

โ€œBoth the Federal High Court in Abuja and the State High Court in Oyo are equal. But as a matter of fact, the Federal High Court in Abuja has more powers.

โ€œThe State High Court order is just an ex parte order, which lasts only seven days. Before that ex parte order, the party had already filed an appeal at an Appeal court. When a new motion is filed in a new court, that means everything will stay, pending the outcome of the appeal. So, we shall wait for the appeal.โ€

Anyanwu further described the BoT meeting, which held at the Bauchi State Governorโ€™s lodge earlier on Wednesday, as a one-sided affair.

โ€œIt was a meeting of friends and associates compared to a Board of Trustees meeting,โ€ he stressed.

On the deployment of police personnel to Wadata on Monday, Anyanwu said he petitioned the police having gotten wind of plans to attack him and his associates.

โ€œYou recall what happened on November 1 (Abdulrahmanโ€™s takeover of partyโ€™s secretariat) because of what happened on October 31 when the former chairman, Umar Damagu, took some members of the NWC to the Legacy House to pronounce the suspension of the National Secretary, the National Legal Adviser, the National Organising Secretary and the Deputy National Legal Advisor.

โ€œThey did not come to Wadata to do that, because we had the information that they intended to attack the secretariat. On November 1, I wrote a letter to the Inspector General of Police, the Director of DSS, informing them of the information we got, that they wanted toย  attack PDP. Based on that, they deployed security personnel,โ€ he said.

With both sides taking opposition stands, the fate of the convention remains largely uncertain.

Published

on

The Kano State Government said it has received over 100 members of the All Progressives Congress from Tarai in Kibiya Local Government Area to the New Nigeria Peopleโ€™s Party.

The defectors, including an APC woman leader, were welcomed by the Kano State Commissioner, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Kibiya.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Balarabe Kiru, on Wednesday in Kano.

โ€œKano State Commissioner, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, has received over one hundred APC Supporters from Tarai in Kibiya Local Government Area under the party woman Leader who decamped into NNPP,โ€ the statement read.

Kiru said that the defectors, led by APC woman leader, Hajiya Sabuwa Tarai, cited the development projects and programmes executed by Gov. Yusufโ€™s administration as the reason for their decision to join NNPP.

โ€œWe are impressed by the numerous projects executed by Gov. Yusuf at the local government and state level,โ€ Tarai said.

The commissioner assured the defectors of equal treatment and welcomed them to the NNPP family, urging them to work together for the partyโ€™s progress.

In her part, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Enlightenment, Hajiya Bintoto, congratulated the members, assuring them that the NNPP party will find a better place for them to stay and give their maximum contributions.
