APC clears Peter Obi’s polling units as early results trickle in

Published

on

The All Progressives Congress (APC) posted a surprising win at the polling unit of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, as early results from parts of Amatutu village in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area, continue to emerge.

At Polling Unit 019, Umudimakasi, Amatutu village, the polling unit where Obi voted, APC secured 73 votes, defeating Labour Party (LP), which polled 57 votes.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) came third with 38 votes while four other parties: YPP, ZLP, APM, ADC and AAC, recorded one vote each.

The outcome marks a notable upset, given Obi’s deep political roots in Agulu and the wider Anaocha area, where he has historically enjoyed strong support.

Though Saturday’s election is not a presidential contest, the result at his polling unit drew attention from observers who had expected LP to dominate the area.

However, APC governorship running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, hails from the area.

Beyond Obi’s polling unit, early results from other units in Amatutu show the APC also leading.

At Polling Unit 015, located at Amatutu Village Hall, Agulu, APC won convincingly with 117 votes, far ahead of APGA’s 29 and Labour Party’s 10.

Similarly, at Polling Unit 023, situated at the Model Primary Health Care Centre, also in Agulu, APC again came out on top with 25 votes, followed by APGA with 8 and Labour Party with 7. YPP and ADC secured one vote each.

The consistency of APC’s lead across the three polling units suggests the party may be gaining ground in parts of Anaocha, traditionally considered stronghold territory for APGA and, more recently, LP.

Collation of results is still ongoing across the LGA and the State.

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has cast his vote in the ongoing governorship election in the state.

Obi voted at exactly 11:46 am.

Speaking with journalists after casting his vote, Obi lamented Nigeria’s deteriorating democracy.

He said: “Our democracy is deteriorating, and unfortunately, those who are benefiting from bad governance seem to be fueling it.

“I have been able to listen and move around to see what is happening, and it is bad that we still experience vote buying. Someone who is not employed collects N30,000 for his vote, that means you have sold your school, your hospital, your job opportunities and selling away your future. That is what is very worrisome about our democracy.

“Other countries, even west African countries that are close to us where I have observed election, I haven’t seen something like this happening. This must stop.

“I’m not on the ballot, but I’m a member of Labour Party and I support my candidate, Dr George Moghalu. All the people contesting are my friends and I wish them well.”

Anambra Election: Vote-Buying Rampant – LP Candidate, George Moghalu Says

Published

on

Moghalu said this on Saturday while addressing newsmen at his residence in Nnewi North Local Government Area of the state.

The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the ongoing Anambra election, George Moghalu, has alleged that widespread vote-buying is taking place in several parts of the state.

Moghalu said this on Saturday while addressing newsmen at his residence in Nnewi North Local Government Area of the state.

He stressed that despite the heavy deployment of security personnel for the election, he had received reports of widespread vote-buying.

“The situation is scandalous and very embarrassing. The issue of vote-buying is no more a speculation.

“It happened very aggressively in the last by-election. This time around, I’ve been receiving reports of the same thing happening,” he said.

Moghalu further stated that he expects security agencies to clamp down on those involved.

“With the quantity of security personnel that has been brought into Anambra state for the purposes of this election, I expect that vote-buyers by now should have been caught and stopped,” he said.

He described the trend as “most unfortunate”, and warned that the crime undermines the integrity of the electoral process.

“I’m very optimistic. I’ve done everything I should do according to the rules. I sleep peacefully. I watch everything play out. One of the things I present to the people is my experience, both in the public and private sectors. And I always ask people to verify who I am.”
