Kabiru Turaki assumes office as PDP Chairman as the party’s crisis deepens

Published

on

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kabiru Turaki, on Tuesday formally assumed office at the party’s National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

Turaki arrived in the company of Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed.

Speaking after assuming office, Turaki thanked PDP leaders for what he described as their “resilience” and “courage” in resisting attempts to destabilise the party.

“I want to thank all of you for your resilience, for your courage, for your resoluteness in this struggle to take over our party, our property, and in doing so, to save democracy,” he said.

Turaki claimed that for several hours, leaders loyal to him were engaged in a confrontation with “renegade members” who were expelled at the party’s national convention in Ibadan.

“For the past seven hours, Nigerians are living witnesses to the struggle we’ve been engaged in with those renegade members of our party that were expelled in our national convention in Ibadan. They came here with armed thugs, as we predicted, to disrupt our meetings, but we were able to contain them effectively,” he said.

Last Saturday’s Ibadan convention resulted in the expulsion of several high-profile members, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, Austin Nwachukwu, and others, for alleged anti-party activities.

The factional NEC loyal to Wike later announced the expulsion of Bode George, former BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara, and Turaki himself — a move that escalated tensions ahead of Tuesday’s parallel meetings at Wadata Plaza.

Turaki said his camp had now taken full control of the secretariat.

“Now, we have driven them out of the secretariat, and as you can see, I have entered my office. I have assumed leadership as the elected chairman.”

He insisted that the confrontation did not end the internal power struggle.

“This struggle is a continuing one. We will remain relentless; we will continue to fight,” he declared.

Turaki also directed strong criticism at the Federal Government, accusing a member of the President’s cabinet of leading the disruption.

“The president should call his minister to order. The kind of conduct that the minister got himself engaged in this morning is unbecoming. How can a serving minister lead thugs to disrupt a legally arranged meeting?” he asked.

He said the clash could have resulted in casualties.

“If we had not exercised restraint… There would have been bloodshed here. We were tear-gassed — more than 50 canisters were shot at us — but we remain relentless,” he added.

Turaki warned that his faction would not hesitate to mobilise supporters nationwide if the attacks continue.

“Should this continue, I will not hesitate to call all members of PDP in Nigeria to assemble here.”

He also appealed to the international community.

“You’ve seen what is happening… the attempts now openly being made to destroy and stifle democracy. We will defend democracy. We are prepared to lay down our lives to nurture this nascent democracy,” he said.

Turaki commended PDP members for staying calm despite what he described as severe provocation.

“This shows that we in PDP are peace-loving and law-abiding, but that does not mean we will not defend our integrity or our lives if threatened,” he stated.

Tuesday’s events followed a chaotic morning at Wadata Plaza as both factions—Turaki’s and Wike’s—arrived for separate NEC and BoT meetings, resulting in a showdown that required heavy security intervention.

Anti-Turaki protesters storm PDP headquarters as Wike faction takes over

Published

on

Supporters of the Nyesom Wike-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party have taken over the surrounding streets of Wadata Plaza, the edifice housing the Peoples Democratic Party headquarters, Wuse, Zone 5, Abuja.

Comprising largely women and youth groups, the protesters carried placards with inscriptions targeted at the PDP National Chairman, Mr Tanimu Turaki, SAN.

Some of the messages on the placards include “No to Turaki,” “Turaki must go,” among others.

Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, emerged as the National Chairman of the PDP in a disputed convention on Saturday, boycotted by the Wike-led faction.

On Monday, both camps gave notice of executive meetings at the party’s secretariat on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Wike-backed faction took over the secretariat as early as 9:45 am.

Led by the sacked Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, the bloc stormed the secretariat building, accompanied by a legion of heavily-armed police personnel.

The security personnel have taken strategic positions along the adjoining streets leading to the Secretariat and the edifice itself.

At the time of filing this report, no member of the Kabiru-led bloc had arrived at the party secretariat.

Wike-led PDP faction expels Makinde, Bode George, others

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party took another fiery turn on Tuesday as the factional National Executive Committee loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ratified the expulsion of Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State.

The NEC also expelled former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara; former National Vice Chairman of the party, Bode George, and the recently elected party National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, SAN.

The move comes just days after the controversial PDP national convention held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, last Saturday, which saw Wike and his loyalists expelled from the party.

The development triggered Tuesday’s heated confrontation between both camps at the party’s national secretariat in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, where the two factions had scheduled parallel NEC and Board of Trustees meetings.

The factional NEC, at its meeting held at the national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday, also dissolved the state executive councils in Oyo, Bauchi, Zamfara, Yobe, Lagos, and Ekiti States, directing the constitution of caretaker committees and the conduct of fresh congresses.

A communiqué from the meeting, read by National Secretary Senator Sam Anyanwu, stated, “NEC received the report of the Acting National Chairman, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, detailing breaches of Articles 58(1) and 59(1), including anti-party activities, disobedience to court orders, and conduct bringing the party into disrepute.

“NEC approved the commencement of disciplinary procedures against the following: Adolphus Wabara, Olabode George, Ben N. Obi, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, Bala Mohammed, Oluseyi Makinde, Dauda Lawal, Taofiq Arapaja, Setonji Koshoedo, Okechukwu Obiechina Daniel, Woyengikuro Daniel, Mohammed Kadade Suleiman, Emmanuel Ogidi, Sumaila Adamu Burga, Umar Sani, Udom Emmanuel, and Emmanuel Enorden.”

Osun 2026: INEC urges parties to conduct lawful, transparent primaries

Published

on

The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osun State, Dr Mutiu Agboke, has urged political parties in the state to conduct their primaries in accordance with the law.

Agboke, in a statement issued on Monday in Osogbo, the state capital, by INEC Public Relations Officer, Olurode Musa, said the lawful conduct of party primaries was critical ahead of the 2026 governorship election in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that INEC has fixed August 8, 2026, for the governorship election.

The REC appealed to all registered political parties in the state to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and the commission’s guidelines and regulations for the conduct of their primaries.

“The commission emphasises the need for the conduct of free, fair and peaceful primary elections that reflect the will of the party members as a panacea for the reduction of pre-election litigations.

“We observed that primary elections have often been a source of pre-election litigation, which can be avoided if parties follow the laid-down procedures and guidelines.

“INEC, therefore, urges all political parties to ensure that their primaries are conducted in a transparent, democratic and peaceful manner.

“All aspirants should be given equal opportunities to participate,” he said.

Agboke said that in line with the guidelines released by the INEC national headquarters, political party primaries for the 2026 governorship election in Osun are scheduled to hold between November 24 and December 15.

He added that the commission was prepared to provide the necessary support and guidance to parties to ensure that their primaries were conducted in accordance with the law.

“We call on all stakeholders, including security agencies, to support the Commission in its efforts to ensure peaceful and credible party primaries.

“INEC will continue to monitor the activities of political parties and take appropriate actions within the ambit of the law against any party that fails to comply with electoral laws and regulations,” he said.
