Early detection crucial to fighting cancer – Anambra first lady

Published

on

The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has said that early detection is crucial to fighting cancer, adding that there is an urgent need to evaluate common lifestyle choices, beginning with what people consume every day.

Mrs Soludo said cancer has gained unhindered access to many households and communities largely because of careless consumption habits and addictions.

The Anambra first lady, who is also the founder of Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, stated this in a press statement released on Wednesday to commemorate World Cancer Day, marked annually on February 4.

World Cancer Day is an international awareness day observed on February 4 to encourage cancer prevention, detection and treatment.

It is led by the Union for International Cancer Control in support of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008.

The primary goal of World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer and to rally the international community against preventable suffering associated with the disease.

The day is observed by the United Nations.

Soludo said the theme for this year, United by Unique, calls on the public to approach the fight against cancer more intentionally, noting that cancer is more than a medical condition but a deeply personal human experience that requires collective care and support.

She said, “Cancer is still stealing from us on an unimaginable scale. While we also share stories of triumph over this household enemy, a lot more emphasis must be laid on the disturbing numbers it leaves in its trail.

“Each year, the numbers keep getting scarier and more worrisome. All these point to how much we’ve lost consciousness of what truly matters: routine cancer checks and healthy living.

“Of course, at the heart of cancer care and advocacy remains the fact that early detection is key to achieving the right solution. Routine cancer screening is paramount here.

“Remember that cancer is only deadly if it is detected late. You don’t have to wait — take a step and get yourself screened.

“Also crucial to fighting cancer is the urgent need to evaluate common lifestyle choices, beginning with what we consume every day.”

Cancer, she said, “has had unhindered access to our households and communities largely because of some careless consumption habits and addictions. It’s really time to reassess certain unhealthy habits.

“The theme for this year’s World Cancer Day, United by Unique, calls us to approach the campaign against cancer more intentionally. Cancer is beyond just a medical discovery — it is a touching, distinct human story. People who are fighting cancer need our love, care and support.

“It’s not their burden alone — it’s our collective story of resilience and survival. Do whatever you can to support anyone fighting it. That’s how we can make a lasting difference.”

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the Anambra first lady urged residents, particularly women and mothers, to prioritise their health and overall wellbeing, emphasising that a healthy body is the foundation of a productive life and that health is the “greatest wealth.”

She said people must adopt a holistic health and self-care approach that includes physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing to reduce preventable, lifestyle-related illnesses.

Soludo urged individuals to nourish themselves well to think well, move well, work well, love well and sleep well.

VIDEO: Viral soldier who asked politicians’ sons to join Army dismissed after months in detention

Published

on

A Nigerian soldier, Lance Corporal Rotimi Olamilekan, has opened up on his arrest, detention, and eventual dismissal from the Nigerian Army after he made a viral video calling on politicians to allow their children join the military to fight terrorism.

In a fresh narration shared online, Olamilekan alleged that he endured months of humiliation, harsh treatment, and denial of basic rights following his arrest.

Arrest Over Viral Video

According to Olamilekan, his ordeal began after he recorded and shared a video last year urging ministers, governors, lawmakers, and local government chairmen to send their sons to the battlefield.

He said he was arrested directly from his duty post in the North-East, where he had been deployed for several years.

“I was arrested because of the video I made, saying politicians should send their sons into the army to fight terrorists,” he stated, adding that he was handcuffed and treated like a criminal during the operation.

Years Of Deployment In Conflict Zone

The dismissed soldier revealed that he had spent about four years and nine months in a remote bush location in Maiduguri without relief or recognition.

He explained that the prolonged deployment took a toll on him, especially as he witnessed the loss of several colleagues during operations against insurgents.

Reflecting on his service, Olamilekan insisted he had maintained a clean disciplinary record since joining the army in 2018.

“I have never been charged before. I never fought anyone, never stole, and never engaged in misconduct,” he said.

Transfers Across Detention Facilities

Following his arrest, Olamilekan said he was moved between multiple detention centres, including a military guardroom in Maiduguri and a facility in Abuja.

He claimed he spent over a month in detention in the capital, where he was allegedly kept in handcuffs on both his legs and hands.

“They moved me from Maiduguri to Abuja and back again. I was still locked up as if I had committed a serious crime,” he recounted.

Allegations Of Harsh Treatment

Olamilekan also accused authorities of subjecting him to degrading conditions during detention.

He claimed he was fed poorly, received limited meals daily, and was denied access to his phone or contact with his family and legal representatives.

“I really suffered. The feeding was just twice a day and not enough. I couldn’t talk to anyone because they collected my phone,” he alleged.

Dismissal Without Proper Defence

The former soldier said he was later formally charged with multiple offences but was not given adequate opportunity to defend himself.

According to him, his dismissal was announced after the charges were read out, which he described as shocking and unfair.

“It shows that in our country, we don’t have freedom of speech. I never expected this,” he lamented.

Public Disgrace And Expulsion From Barracks

Olamilekan further revealed that he was publicly marched out of the barracks after his dismissal, an experience he described as painful and humiliating.

He noted that he was taken to another military division before being expelled from the premises as a dismissed soldier.

“It is so sad. After eight years of service, this is how my career ended,” he said.

Appeal For Justice

The dismissed lance corporal has now appealed to Nigerians and civil society organisations to support his quest for justice.

He maintained that his viral message was motivated by concern over the increasing loss of soldiers on the battlefield.

“I don’t have anyone to fight for me, but I believe God will fight for me. I want people to stand for me because this is not right,” he said.

UK returnee attending wedding dies in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash

Published

A woman who had just returned from the United Kingdom (UK) to attend a wedding in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, has died in a road crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

PUNCH Online learnt from a statement on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, that the incident occurred at about 6 p.m. on Monday.

According to Akinbiyi, the victim, alongside two others, was travelling in a white Toyota Camry when the vehicle rammed into a moving truck.

He noted that the impact of the collision led to the death of the UK returnee, while the two other occupants — a male and a female — sustained injuries.

He said, “A fatal road traffic accident occurred at the Christopher University section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at about 17:48 hours on March 23.

“According to eyewitness accounts, the driver of the Camry drove at excessive speed and rammed into a moving truck.

“Three people were involved, including a male and two females. One female died, while the two others sustained injuries.”

He added that preliminary investigations revealed that the two female occupants had just returned from the United Kingdom to attend a wedding ceremony in Abeokuta before the incident.

He noted that the body of the deceased was deposited at the Redeemed Hospital morgue, while the injured were taken to hospitals for treatment.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the two female casualties were on their way from Lagos to Abeokuta, Ogun State, to attend a wedding ceremony after they had just arrived from the United Kingdom.

“While TRACE commiserates with the families of the deceased and injured, drivers are again admonished to avoid excessive speed in view of its attendant consequences,” the statement added.

This accident comes barely three months after world boxing champion Anthony Joshua and his friend were involved in a similar crash within the same section of the expressway.
