Doctors under siege: NARD condemns attack on colleague in Owo, demands compensation

Published

on

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has condemned the assault on one of its members, Dr Adeniyi A, while on duty at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owo, demanding immediate compensation for the pain and trauma he suffered.

Adeniyi was reportedly brutally physically attacked and assaulted in the line of duty by a group of individuals alleged to be relatives of a surgical patient.

NARD warned that this act of violence carried out while the doctor was discharging his duties, goes against every natural justice, describing it as reprehensible, barbaric, and a direct assault on the medical profession and the Nigerian healthcare system.

In a statement signed by the union’s executives and released by its Publicity Secretary Dr Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, NARD, lamented that the attack was even more disturbing considering that it occurred within the hospital environment, a place meant to preserve life, safety, and human dignity.

The union also regretted the recurring pattern of violence against healthcare workers across the country and the gross inadequacy of security measures in many health facilities.

It said the increasing tendency for members of the public to resort to physical aggression against doctors and other health workers is dangerous, unlawful, and must be decisively addressed.

“We can no longer tolerate a situation where resident doctors are exposed to harm while rendering essential services to Nigerians.

“We vow that assault on resident doctors will no longer be treated with silence or indifference.

“We demand full compensation for the pain, trauma, and suffering endured by our colleague as a result of this assault.

“Complete coverage of all medical expenses arising from the incident without delay.

“Immediate and comprehensive upscaling of security architecture around all entry points, clinical areas, and strategic posts within FMC Owo to prevent a recurrence.

“Prompt apprehension and diligent prosecution of all perpetrators involved in this criminal act, to serve as a deterrent to others.

NARD warned that failure to meet the demands will compel the association to take all legitimate actions necessary to protect its members and defend the sanctity of medical practice in Nigeria.

“The Era Of Monday Sit-At-Home Is Over” – Nnamdi Kanu

Published

on

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has ordered a total end to the weekly Monday sit-at-home in the South-East.

According to a statement on Sunday by IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the directive is effective Monday, February 9, 2026.

According to Powerful, all normal economic activities should resume tomorrow, adding that schools, workplaces, and markets should open without fear or intimidation.

According to the IPOB’s spokesperson, any attempt to enforce the sit-at-home going forward, would be considered opposition to Kanu’s orders and the Biafran cause.

“All markets, schools, offices, transport services, and economic activities must resume fully and normally from tomorrow. The era of Monday sit-at-home is over,” the statement read.

The pro-Biafra group also warned that no state governor has the authority to threaten or forcibly shut down the businesses of traders who may choose to observe personal discretion.

While urging citizens to remain vigilant, calm, and law-abiding, the statement stressed that any market renovations or relocations must involve stakeholder consent and provision of temporary trading sites before work begins.

Meanwhile, a legal consultant to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has criticised calls urging a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, to abandon his 2027 presidential ambition.

Ejimakor described such appeals as “cowardly and duplicitous,” insisting that claims about President Bola Tinubu’s alleged control of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies should not be used to discourage Obi from contesting.

It was  reports that in a statement shared via his 𝕏 handle, the lawyer argued that Nigeria’s political history contradicts the notion that incumbency guarantees electoral victory.

According to him, the belief that Obi cannot win because of the perceived influence of the ruling party over state institutions is both misleading and historically inaccurate.

‘Soldiers Withdrawn Before Attack’ – Kwara Village Head Breaks Silence On 10-Hour Bandits’ Massacre

Published

on

The Head of Woro Village, in Kwara State, Umar Salihu, has blamed inadequate security for the deadly bandit attack that reportedly claimed over 200 lives in the community, saying the assailants operated for nearly 10 hours without resistance.

Salihu disclosed that the attackers had earlier sent a letter to the community, claiming they were coming to preach before launching the deadly assault.

According to the village head, the letter was delivered on January 10, 2026, through a traditional leader from a neighbouring village who had allegedly been abducted and forced to deliver the message.

“I received the notification on the 10th of January around 7.45 from a man who came; he is the Hakimi of one small village about four kilometres from my community,” Daily Post quoted Salihu saying over the weekend.

“According to him, they abducted him and forced him to bring the letter or else they would kill him and that is why he brought the letter to me.”

He said he immediately reported the matter to security agencies and traditional authorities.

The village head said, “When the letter got to me, I went to the DSS in our local government headquarters and the following day I took the letter to the Emirate council and they wrote a letter in that respect to the various appropriate quarters.”

Salihu explained that the letter did not specify a date or time for the planned visit.

“The content of the letter said they were coming down to preach but there was no date and time, they just said they were coming down to preach,” he added.

The village head said the attackers eventually struck and operated freely for several hours, killing scores of residents and destroying property.

He attributed the scale of the attack to the absence of security personnel in the area.

“We have soldiers staying there but the bandits came over the night and there was gun exchange between the army and bandits; since then, they took away the soldiers and that place has remained open.

“There is no security presence and that is why they came and spent almost 10 hours,” he said.

Salihu described the incident as devastating, revealing that many victims were burned alive in churches and inside their homes.

“There are some that are buried according to Christian rites, there are some that have been affected and do not belong to the community and have to take their corpses to a different location.

“There are some that were burned down in the church. Some, they locked them inside their rooms and set them on fire. Those that were burned inside the church, we cannot identify some; we can’t count the number of people burnt down,” he lamented.

The community leader called for urgent security intervention to prevent further attacks and protect residents from continued threats by bandits.

Ghana Recalls High Commissioner To Nigeria Over Electoral Malpractices

Published

on

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate recall of the country’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Ahmed.

It was reports that he was recalled following allegations linked to irregularities during the National Democratic Congress parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

A statement released by the Presidency in Accra on Saturday said the decision was taken after concerns were raised about Mr Ahmed’s involvement in the primaries while serving as a public officer.

Mr Ahmed was one of the aspirants in the party exercise.

The presidency explained that the recall takes effect immediately and was made to prevent any appearance of wrongdoing or a breach of the government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.

It added that, given the situation, Mr Ahmed could no longer continue in his role as High Commissioner.

The statement also noted that allegations of vote-buying were reported against more than one aspirant who took part in the primaries held on Saturday.

These claims led to growing concerns within the party and the government.

The action by the president followed a public announcement by the General Secretary of the NDC that the party had begun its own investigation into the allegations arising from the primary election.

The presidency said the president had taken note of the party’s internal probe but decided that swift action was needed based on the standards expected of public officers.

As a result, the Minister for Foreign Affairs was directed to begin all required administrative and diplomatic steps to enforce the recall.
