Court remands four suspects over Plateau mass killing

Published

on

A Plateau State High Court on Thursday remanded four suspects in the custody of the Department of State Services over the March 2026 killings in the Angwa Rukuba community, Jos North Local Government Area, and adjourned the case until April 30, 2026, for arraignment.

PUNCH Metro reports that the arraignment of the suspects was stalled due to the absence of defence counsel.

Our correspondent reports that the killings, which occurred on March 28, left no fewer than 30 persons, including children, dead after suspected attackers invaded communities in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas.

Following the incident, Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attacks, describing them as attempts to destabilise the state and insisting that “life must go on” despite the violence.

“But I said no! Life must go on. Plateau must move forward by the grace of God. The genocide on the Plateau will come to an end. What is happening is not a farmer-herder conflict. Let me be clear: it is genocide, and I urge the international community to take note,” the governor said.

President Bola Tinubu, who visited the state earlier this month, also met victims and assured them that justice would be served.

“We are optimistic that ongoing interventions will help restore lasting peace,” the President said, while urging residents to remain vigilant.

The four suspects listed for arraignment in court in Jos on Thursday include Isa Umar Ibrahim, Auwalu Abubakar (also known as Auwalu Dogo), Musa Abubakar Ibrahim (also known as Yaroro), among others, who are alleged to have conspired to carry out the attack.

The Plateau State Government filed charges against the suspects over the March 2026 killings in Angwa Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area.

The government said the suspects were arrested by the DSS between April 3 and April 10, 2026, and charged with offences including criminal conspiracy to commit terrorism and other related offences.

According to the charge filed by the State Attorney General, Philemon Daffi, the defendants acted “contrary to Section 269 and punishable under Section 270 of the Penal Code Law of Plateau State, 2017.”

The charge states, “That you… did conspire among yourselves to commit offences relating to terrorism when you planned, organised, facilitated, aided, and contributed money to carry out the attack in Angwan Rukuba… which led to the death of over thirty (30) people.”

When the case resumed on Thursday at Court 12 of the Plateau State High Court in Jos for arraignment, the suspects, speaking through an interpreter, requested an adjournment to enable them to engage defence counsel of their choice.

The prosecution counsel and Solicitor General of Plateau State, Joel Tagven, did not object to the application for adjournment. He, however, requested that the suspects be remanded in DSS custody pending the next hearing.

His application was granted.

“Ordinarily, the matter is supposed to come up today, but in view of the request of the accused demanding lawyers, we can adjourn the case to enable them to get lawyers of their choice. I also appeal that the suspects be remanded in DSS custody for easy access and continuation of the investigation,” the prosecution counsel said.

The presiding judge, Justice Gidelia FomYom, adjourned the case until April 30, 2026, for arraignment.

The suspects were immediately moved out of the court in a bus to the DSS facility.

In an interview with journalists, the Solicitor General of Plateau State commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating what he described as an enabling environment for the prosecution of the suspects in accordance with the law.

“We appreciate Mr President for giving a marching order. In fact, we appreciate him for four reasons. First, for giving the marching order, which led to the DSS making efforts that resulted in the arrest of the suspects.

“Second, in the past, prosecutions were not conducted in the state; suspects were usually taken to Abuja. But today, we have been permitted to prosecute them here,” he said.

He added, “Third, you will recall that when Mr President came, he pledged that security materials like CCTV cameras would be provided to the state for security purposes. That will go a long way in helping secure the state. Fourth is the issue of prosecuting them here. This is not how it used to be.

“This is now happening here, and it is something to appreciate Mr President, the governor, and the DSS for their collaboration and support to enable this prosecution in the state,” the Solicitor General added.

PHOTOS: Edo State Govt uncovers adoption scam, shuts down illegal orphanage and arrests proprietress

Published

on

The Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has uncovered an alleged adoption scam following the closure of an illegal orphanage, Uwadia Children Home, in Afuze, Owan East Local Government Area.

The development also led to the arrest of the proprietress, an elderly woman, Mrs Grace Efe Uwadia who has been handed over to the Aideyan Police Station in Benin City for further investigation and prosecution.

Providing further insight into the case, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development revealed that the incident was triggered by a formal complaint from an alleged victim, Mr Monday Akpaduma who had approached the ministry after encountering irregularities in an adoption process.

According to the Commissioner, the man alleged that he initially applied to adopt a child through the orphanage and paid a sum of N250,000 as a processing fee.

He was subsequently asked to pay an additional N1 million before the child could be released to him.

After prolonged delays, he was allegedly informed that the adoption fee had been increased to N2 million by the ministry, a claim that raised suspicion and prompted him to report directly to the ministry.

The Commissioner explained that an internal investigation was immediately launched, which revealed that all documents presented by Mr. Akpaduma were fraudulent and did not originate from the ministry, despite being issued on an old ministry letterhead.

Further allegations by Mr. Akpadume, pointed to a staff member of the Social Welfare Department in Owan East Local Government Council, Mr Vincent Ogbodo as the source of the documents, suggesting possible collusion with the illegal orphanage in carrying out the alleged illicit activities.

She disclosed that the Local Government staff could not be arrested at the time of the operation, as he was not present in the office.

However, she assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend him, stressing that all individuals connected to the illegal operation will be brought to justice.

The Commissioner further stated that the ministry has evacuated the children from the orphanage to a safe location, adding that some of them are currently receiving medical treatment.

She emphasized that the Edo State Government has zero tolerance for exploitation, fraud, or any form of illegal practice involving vulnerable children, and reiterated that the ministry does not charge arbitrary or inflated fees for adoption.

She urged members of the public to always verify information directly with the ministry and report any suspicious activities, while assuring that the affected children are now in safe custody and receiving appropriate care.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Terrorists kill 20 in Borno, Adamawa border communities

Published

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have killed 20 persons in Pubagu, Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, and Mayo-Ladde in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Our correspondent gathered that the terrorists stormed the two border communities around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, overpowering local security operatives before killing residents.

Confirming the attack exclusively to PUNCH Online on Wednesday, the Chairman of Askira Uba Local Government Area, Mada Saidu, said 11 people were killed in Pubagu, Borno State, while nine lost their lives in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

He said, “Yes, there was an attack in Pubagu, Askira Uba, yesterday, Tuesday, around 4 p.m. Eleven people were killed. While in Mayo-Ladde, Hong Local Government in Adamawa State, nine people were killed.”

The two locations, according to him, are separated by a river.

“In total, we have 20 deaths, 11 from Askira Uba in Borno, nine from Hong Local Government, Adamawa,” he added.

Saidu noted that the insurgents overpowered local security operatives, gained access to the communities, and shot their victims.

“I later went there together with the Army. Initially, it was local security that was there, that is, hunters and vigilantes. But they were overpowered by the terrorists,” he stated.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the communities on motorcycles and operated for hours, destroying homes and looting property.

One of the survivors, who pleaded anonymity, said, “Yesterday evening, the terrorists stormed our community in Pubagu. They shot sporadically for hours, burning houses and shops. They killed both men and women after operating for over one hour.”

The source added that the terrorists operated with little resistance from security operatives.

“The local vigilantes and hunters tried their best. Unfortunately, the terrorists were well armed and in much greater numbers. The resistance was not strong enough. The hunters later fled for their lives, too,” the source added.

On April 16, PUNCH Online reported that Boko Haram terrorists killed four soldiers and one civilian in Mussa community in Askira Uba Local Government Area.

The Chairman of the local government, Mada Saidu, who confirmed the earlier attack, said the civilian casualty was a woman.
