INEC recognises Atiku, 470 ADC candidates ahead of the 2027 race

Published

on

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it will recognise only the candidates submitted by the Senator David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), confirming that the faction has already nominated candidates for 471 elective positions ahead of the 2027 general election.

INEC National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, told The PUNCH that the commission granted the Mark-led faction access to its nomination portal, following the Supreme Court judgment affirming its leadership, adding that the rival faction had no legal basis to submit candidates.

He said, “Yes, we gave the Mark-led faction the code based on the recent Supreme Court judgment that affirmed his leadership of the party and the faction has since submitted most of its candidates for a total of 471 – presidential (2), senatorial (109) and House of Representatives (360) constituencies.

“The court, however, did not say we should accept any submissions by the rival faction which, in any case, had lost its appeal for recognition.”

The ADC, however, called for the investigation and prosecution of its factional leader, Nafiu Gombe, following INEC’s clarification that claims that Gombe uploaded the party’s candidates for the 2027 general election through the commission’s nomination portal were false.

The Tuesday statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, followed INEC’s clarification that it did not grant Bala access codes to its restricted nomination portal and that only the Mark-led National Executive Committee was recognised by the electoral body.

Reacting to INEC’s clarification, the ADC welcomed the commission’s position and accused Bala of attempting to mislead Nigerians.

The party said the issue had gone beyond political disagreements and now bordered on an alleged attempt to deceive the public.

The statement read, “The African Democratic Congress (ADC) welcomes the prompt clarification by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which unequivocally confirmed that the document circulated by Mr Nafiu Bala purporting to show that he had obtained the commission’s access code and uploaded candidates on behalf of the ADC for the 2027 general election was forged, and that the claim itself was entirely false.

“The issue before us is no longer simply about the continuous false statements that have been issued by Nafiu Bala Gombe at the behest of his sponsors. It is about the clear and unmistakable attempt to mislead the Nigerian public.”

The ADC argued that falsely claiming access to INEC’s restricted nomination portal was a serious allegation that should attract the attention of security agencies.

The opposition party consequently urged the electoral commission to ensure that everyone connected with the alleged false claim is investigated and prosecuted.

“To publicly claim that one has gained access to INEC’s restricted nomination platform and exercised powers reserved for duly recognised party officials is a grave matter that deserves the immediate attention of law enforcement agencies.

“As a responsible party, the ADC therefore calls on INEC to take all the necessary steps to ensure that Mr Nafiu Bala and anyone else involved in originating or promoting this falsehood are investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the party stated.

The PUNCH earlier reported that Atiku Abubakar’s Media Office accused INEC of granting Bala access to the commission’s nomination portal, an allegation the electoral body subsequently denied.

Responding to Monday’s Court of Appeal judgment on the ADC leadership dispute, Haruna said the commission would withhold its position until it obtained and studied the Certified True Copy of the judgment.

He said, “INEC cannot say anything until we see the judgment. We have to see the details of the judgment first. Hopefully, in the next two days, within 48 hours, the court should release the judgment. We will study it, and then the commission will take a position.”

Haruna’s comments followed Monday’s Court of Appeal judgment affirming an earlier Federal High Court decision restraining INEC from recognising state congresses conducted by committees appointed by the David Mark-led caretaker leadership of the ADC.

The appellate court’s decision has reignited the party’s leadership dispute, although INEC maintained that its recognition of the Mark-led leadership and the nominations already submitted were based on the earlier Supreme Court judgment.

The appellate court, in a split decision of two to one, delivered on Monday, affirmed the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which held that the dissolution of the party’s state executives by the Mark-led leadership violated the ADC constitution and consequently restrained INEC from recognising the congresses conducted by the caretaker committees.

The appellate court, in its verdict, upheld the judgment of Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja, dismissing the appeal against the lower court, which the appellants had argued lacked merit.

Justice Abdulmalik had, in a judgment delivered on April 29, restrained INEC from giving recognition to the committee set up by the Mark-led leadership to conduct state congresses of the ADC.

The suit was filed by seven aggrieved state chairmen of the ADC, who had challenged their dissolution and the setting up of a state committee to conduct state congresses of the ADC, insisting that the action of the Mark-led leadership robbed them of the statutory powers to conduct congresses of the ADC.

In the judgment delivered on April 29, the trial court held that the Mark-led leadership was wrong to have dissolved the state’s leadership of the ADC and set up a caretaker committee for the conduct of the congresses.

According to the trial court, the ADC was wrong to have dissolved the state’s leadership when their tenure had not expired, and by so doing breached its own constitution.

Justice Abdulmalik held that the powers to conduct congresses belonged to the state executive, whose tenure was still running, adding that a mediation report showed that the tenure of the state executive was in 2023 extended by another four years.

Not satisfied with the judgment of the high court, the ADC, Mark, National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola and Abdullahi approached the appellate court to challenge the decision of the trial court.

They claimed, among others, that the trial court erred when it assumed jurisdiction over a matter that fell within the internal affairs of the ADC.

They also claimed that while the respondents in the suit lacked merit to institute the legal action, the fact that they did not exhaust the internal mechanism of the ADC for resolving party issues robbed the court of necessary jurisdiction to entertain the suit.

However, the appellate court in its majority decision held that it found no reason to deviate from the judgment of the trial court.

However, the latest appellate decision relates specifically to the parties’ state congresses and not the nomination of candidates for elective offices.

The ADC maintained that Monday’s Court of Appeal judgment did not affect the validity of its primaries or the emergence of its candidates.

In a statement issued by Abdullahi, the ADC said the judgment concerned only the conduct of ward, local government and state congresses and had no bearing on the direct primaries through which its candidates emerged.

Bode George warns against using judiciary, INEC to destroy PDP

Published

on

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olabode George, has warned against what he described as attempts to capture the opposition party through judicial manipulation and the misuse of state institutions.

George, in a statement on Tuesday, condemned the recent developments surrounding the party’s leadership crisis, alleging that some forces were working to destabilise the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recall that the Supreme Court, in a split 3–2 judgment delivered on April 30, nullified the PDP national convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, which was backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and produced the Turaki-led leadership.

Following the verdict, the Board of Trustees, chaired by Adolphus Wabara, reconstituted an Interim National Working Committee and retained Turaki and other members of the dissolved leadership. The group has continued to function alongside the PDP leadership recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission and linked to the Nyesom Wike-backed faction.

Meanwhile, the faction led by Mohammed Abdulrahman and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu moved ahead with preparations for the 2027 elections by selling nomination forms to aspirants. The faction’s activities received INEC recognition, including access to upload candidates’ details on the commission’s platform.

The Turaki-led faction, however, maintained its parallel structure and continued issuing nomination forms to aspirants despite not having INEC recognition for its activities. Amid the deepening crisis, several legal battles remain before different courts, with the outcome of the cases expected to play a major role in determining the future direction and leadership of the PDP.

Reacting, the elder statesman said the unfolding events suggest a worrying trend of political interference aimed at undermining opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He stated, “What is unfolding before our eyes is nothing short of an assault on constitutional democracy. There appears to be a deliberate attempt to weaponise institutions of state against opposition political parties because some people are afraid of allowing Nigerians to freely choose their leaders. That is not democracy. That is political intimidation.

“Let me be absolutely clear. There is nothing dishonourable about being a driver. Honest labour deserves dignity and respect. However, nobody becomes the National Chairman of one of Africa’s largest political parties by executive fiat or political manipulation. Leadership is earned through years of sacrifice, service, loyalty, commitment, and democratic legitimacy.

“The issue is not that this man (Abdulrahman Mohammed) was once a driver. The issue is that someone with no known democratic pedigree, no recognised history of building the PDP, no record of leadership within its structures, and no visible contribution to the party’s growth is suddenly being projected as National Chairman.

“Who knows him in our democratic struggle? Where was he when this party was founded in 1998? What sacrifice has he made for the PDP? Leadership cannot be manufactured overnight simply because powerful interests have decided to impose someone on a political party.”

George further urged the judiciary and INEC to uphold the Constitution and remain guided by the established principles of Nigerian law.

The statement added, “Every discerning Nigerian can see what is happening. This is not about promoting one individual. This is about infiltrating, destabilising, and ultimately destroying the PDP from within. Those behind this agenda are attempting to use one man as a vehicle to weaken the opposition. The law on this issue has been settled for decades.”

George cautioned that those who misuse political power often face the judgment of history.

He stated, “The message from our superior courts has been consistent for over forty years: political parties must be allowed to regulate their own internal affairs within the framework of their constitutions and the law.

“INEC itself is a constitutional umpire. Its responsibility is to register political parties, monitor their activities as provided by law, and conduct free, fair, and credible elections. It must never create the impression that it is determining who should lead a political party or taking sides in internal political disputes.

“Once institutions established to protect democracy begin to determine the leadership of political parties, the very foundation of constitutional democracy is placed in jeopardy. I have served this country under military rule and under democracy. I know what happens when institutions lose their independence. Power is temporary. Institutions must endure.

“Those who think they can capture every institution of state and suppress the opposition should remember that governments come and go, but history remains. Every abuse of power carries within it the seed of its own destruction.”

The PDP chieftain said no government has the right to determine opposition leadership or candidates, as such decisions belong to parties and voters.

He stated, “Finally, let me conclude with this solemn warning. At over eighty years of age, I have watched this nation through military rule, through the struggle for democracy, and through successive civilian administrations. I have seen governments come and go. One lesson history has taught me is this: no government has ever grown stronger by weakening democratic institutions.

“Democracy does not belong to the APC. It does not belong to the Presidency. It belongs to the Nigerian people. No government has the constitutional or moral authority to determine who should lead an opposition political party or who should contest an election. That decision belongs to political parties and ultimately to the Nigerian electorate.

“The continued weaponisation of institutions against the opposition is dangerous for our national stability. A democracy without a credible opposition is no democracy at all.

“I therefore call on the judiciary to remain faithful to the Constitution, on INEC to discharge its constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour, and on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that every institution of government remains above partisan interests. The enduring legacy of any President is not the number of political victories he secures, but the strength of the democratic institutions he leaves behind.”

The elder statesman pledged that they would continue to uphold and defend democracy through all legal and constitutional avenues.

The statement added, “History teaches one lesson that those intoxicated by power often forget: power is transient. Every abuse of power has an expiry date. Every attempt to subvert democracy ultimately collapses under the weight of justice and truth.

“We shall continue to defend democracy through every lawful and constitutional means. We owe that duty to those who fought for this democracy, to those who paid the supreme price for it, and to generations of Nigerians yet unborn.

“No individual is greater than Nigeria. No political party is greater than the Constitution. Democracy must prevail.”

2027: ‘Tinubu-Shettima zero-zero ticket, not Muslim-Muslim ticket’ – Adebayo

Published

on

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Adewole Adebayo, on Tuesday declared that there is nothing like a Muslim-Muslim ticket, stressing that Nigerians are not interested in such ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Adebayo maintained that Nigerians want a righteous leader who is fit for the job and is not one who emerges based on religious sentiments.

Appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show, the SDP presidential candidate described the President Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima ticket as zero-zero ticket.

He said: “There is nothing like the Muslim-Muslim ticket, even when the contraption was brought up four years ago and I was in Kano, I was asked the same question while meddling with the Ulamas and I let them know that if you are hoping for a Muslim-Muslim ticket in President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, you will be lucky to even have a single Muslim out of the two.

“And it turned out now that it’s not a Muslim-Muslim ticket, from the point of view of Muslims in Nigeria it’s a zero-zero ticket because in Islam what is expected of a leader in Islamic jurisprudence is not the religion of that leader but justice.

“The reason why Muslims get involved in politics is to have a just society and there are guidelines in Islamic jurisprudence regarding politics. In Islam, it’s expected that if you are a good Muslim you do not give public office or responsibility to anyone who is not fit for that, so you look among yourselves for the most suitable and committed person.”

He insisted that the concept of Muslim-Muslim ticket was created to defraud Nigerians.

“Second, you don’t give power based on favoritism or bias, and you don’t give power based on expectation of reward.

“So the whole concept from the beginning was just to defraud the populace by using religious sentiment. What the North and all Nigerians are looking for is a righteous leader no matter the person,” he said.

Noting that Nigerians are groaning due to the toMuslim-Muslim ticket, Adebayo said one of the proponents, Nasir El-Rufai and his family are crying, adding that Nigerians do not support it.

“So when you say you are looking for a Muslim-Muslim ticket and there is no justice anywhere, even one of the proponents, El-Rufai who was celebrating it, he and his family are now crying for justice and that is the biggest irony you can have.

“Nobody was more of a Muslim-Muslim ticket than El-Rufai who can’t get justice, so I don’t think that Nigerians are interested in that at all and the government and APC are just looking for what to say, there is no support for a Muslim-Muslim ticket anywhere,” he added.

APC, PDP complete candidates upload as INEC extends deadline

Published

on

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have confirmed the successful upload of their presidential, vice-presidential and National Assembly candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Candidate Nomination Portal, as the electoral body extended the submission deadline for political parties to July 14.

The development came as the APC mocked opposition parties that failed to meet the original July 11 deadline, saying their inability to complete the nomination process on schedule raised questions about their organisational capacity and readiness for the 2027 general elections.

The electoral commission, on Sunday, extended the deadline for political parties to submit the names and personal particulars of their candidates for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections by three days, shifting it to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

INEC disclosed this in a statement signed by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

According to the commission, the extension followed an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council on behalf of political parties that were unable to complete the upload of their candidates’ details within the stipulated timeframe.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission has approved the extension of the deadline for submission of lists of candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly Elections by political parties,” the statement read.

It added, “The deadline for submission in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, being Saturday 11th July 2026, has been extended to midnight on Tuesday 14th July 2026.”

INEC said the decision reflected its commitment to ensuring inclusivity in the electoral process while operating within the provisions of the law.

It urged political parties to make use of the additional time to complete the submission process before the new deadline expires.

Earlier on Sunday, APC National Chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, confirmed that the party had successfully uploaded the list of its candidates.

On his verified X account, the APC national chairman stated, “I congratulate our candidates, leaders, and members of APC on the successful 100% upload of our Presidential, Vice Presidential, Senate, and House of Representatives candidates on the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal.

“With this milestone achieved, our focus now shifts to mobilisation and preparations for a successful campaign and decisive victory at the polls.”

The party confirmed the upload of 471 names on the INEC portal, which are the names of its presidential and vice presidential candidates, 109 senatorial candidates and 360 House of Representatives candidates.

Similarly, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, backed the Peoples Democratic Party, which confirmed it had successfully uploaded the names of its presidential candidate and National Assembly candidates to the INEC portal ahead of the 2027 elections.

The PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, in a statement on Sunday, described the completion of the exercise as “another milestone.”

“I am pleased to inform all PDP members and Nigerians that our great party, under my leadership, has successfully uploaded the names of our presidential candidate, his running mate, and our National Assembly candidates onto the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal,” Mohammed stated on Sunday.

Mocking the opposition parties over their failure to meet the INEC deadline, the APC said the development exposed their lack of organisational capacity and readiness to govern.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, on Sunday, the APC said the development further exposed the opposition’s internal weaknesses and raised concerns about their ability to effectively manage party affairs.

It stated, “While INEC acted within its statutory powers and administrative discretion in extending the deadline for opposition parties to upload names of their candidates, it is noteworthy that the extension was necessitated by the stark failure of opposition parties to manage their internal processes to comply with INEC’s submission deadline despite having fewer candidates to manage compared to the APC.

“This development provides yet another clear indication of the opposition’s chronic inherent weakness and raises legitimate questions about their operational capacity.

“Political parties that cannot efficiently conclude their own internal nomination processes cannot possibly be trusted by Nigerians to possess the competence, discipline, or readiness to govern our great nation or its subnational governments.

“It is starkly ironical that the same opposition parties have repeatedly peddled false, malicious and unfounded tales that the APC controls and dictates INEC’s decisions.

“Yet, as they failed to meet the submission deadline, they shamelessly turned to the same INEC for respite, and were granted an extension.

“And the same APC that would have been the obvious beneficiary if INEC had stood firm on its original deadline kept its distance, having met the deadline and completed its submission.

“Again, this underscores the opposition’s hypocrisy and true character as peddlers of fake news and merchants of blackmail.

“With the successful upload of particulars of all its presidential, vice presidential, Senate, and House of Representatives candidates on the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal, APC has, again, demonstrated its leadership and superior organisational capacity, discipline, and solid commitment to due process.”

The ruling party urged its leaders, stakeholders, members, and supporters to remain focused on the challenges ahead.
