US senate confirms Jay Clayton as Trump’s intelligence chief

Published

on

The US Senate confirmed Jay Clayton as Donald Trump’s top intelligence official on Tuesday, putting a permanent chief in charge of the country’s spy agencies as the president revives unsupported election fraud claims ahead of the midterms.

Senators voted 51-47 to confirm Clayton’s appointment, with all Democrats in the upper chamber voting against it.

“Jay is outstanding in every way, and will do a spectacular job as Director!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social shortly after the vote.

The former securities regulator and federal prosecutor succeeds Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned last month, and inherits an 18-agency intelligence community shaken by leadership turnover and staff cuts.

His appointment comes as concern mounts that Trump is drawing national security agencies into his effort to relitigate the 2020 election and cast doubt on the integrity of the coming vote.

Earlier this month, Trump used a televised White House address to release declassified intelligence he claimed showed Chinese interference while again falsely asserting that the 2020 election was stolen.

Clayton takes over from acting director of national intelligence Bill Pulte, a Trump loyalist with no relevant experience whose brief tenure alarmed lawmakers in both parties.

Pulte has used his other role as federal housing regulator to refer several of Trump’s political opponents for possible prosecution and oversaw sweeping cuts at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Hours before Clayton’s confirmation vote, Pulte boasted that a fifth round of dismissals would bring staffing reductions at the intelligence coordinating body to about 30 percent within weeks.

• ‘Serious reservations’ –

Democrats had initially welcomed Clayton as a more conventional alternative to Pulte, but turned sharply against him during his confirmation hearing.

Repeatedly asked whether Democrat Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election, Clayton would only say that Biden had been “certified” as the winner.

“I’m not an election denier,” Clayton told senators, without directly answering the question.

Senate Intelligence Committee vice chair Mark Warner said he “came away from his confirmation hearing with serious reservations about whether he would be willing to stand up to political pressure.”

“I sincerely hope he proves those concerns unfounded, because the Intelligence Community deserves steadier leadership than it has received in recent months,” Warner said in a statement after the vote.

Chuck Schumer, the party’s leader in the upper chamber of Congress, previously called Clayton’s hearing performance “abysmal.”

Republicans defended Clayton’s record as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump’s first term and, more recently, as US attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican, said Clayton’s experience fighting financial crime and handling national security cases made him a proven leader at a time of heightened threats.

His confirmation could also help revive negotiations over Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which allows the US government to collect communications involving foreigners abroad without an individual warrant.

Democrats had resisted renewing the authority while Pulte remained acting intelligence chief, citing fears of administration overreach.

But any extension is unlikely before September because the House of Representatives has already left Washington for its summer recess.

VIDEO: Some Nigerian pastors stage miracles – Prophet Odumeje

Published

on

Popular Anambra-based cleric Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, widely known as Odumeje, has alleged that numerous pastors in Nigeria routinely stage fake miracles to deceive congregants.

Speaking on a new episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, Odumeje expressed concerns over the prevalence of manufactured miracles, explaining why he consistently declines invitations to minister at other churches.

“Arrangees [staged miracles] in churches are becoming too much in Nigeria. That is why I don’t go to other clerics’ churches as guest minister. I have turned down a lot of invitations,” Odumeje stated.

The controversial cleric maintained that the healing miracles performed in his own ministry are genuine and easily verifiable through documented testimonies and participant details.

“The miracles we do here, we see their faces. You can take their names and verify,” he said.

Odumeje further claimed that no other living Nigerian Christian cleric matches his spiritual capabilities, singling out the late Prophet T.B. Joshua as his “father in the Lord” as the only exception.

Foreigners are now seeking Nigerian passports – Abike Dabiri-Erewa says

Published

on

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, says her office has received numerous appeals from foreign nationals interested in obtaining Nigerian passports.

Dabiri-Erewa made this known at a press briefing in Abuja, on Wednesday, October 21.

Dabiri-Erewa said the volume of requests had become significant, with some applicants asking her office to approach the President on their behalf. She stated that many of these foreigners have developed interest in Nigeria while others are considering investments and stronger connections with the country.

“On my table, you see a lot of people telling us to beg the President to be able to give them Nigerian passports. Ask the Minister of Interior. It’s too much,” she said

To illustrate her point, she recalled a woman who told her team during a recorded interaction that she had visited Nigeria and did not want to return to her country of residence.

Ogun schools shut, over 100 pupils hospitalised after deadly Gas leak

Published

on

The Ogun State Government has again shut some schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo after more than 100 pupils were reportedly hospitalised on Wednesday following exposure to an offensive gaseous substance.

The affected pupils were taken to the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, the General Hospital, Ijebu-Igbo, and other healthcare facilities for treatment.

Among the worst-hit schools were Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, Itamerin Comprehensive High School, and Ago-Iwoye.

A video circulating on social media showed some pupils fainting and being rushed to hospitals after inhaling the substance, which the state government had previously identified as methane.

A teacher at one of the affected schools, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, said the incident occurred at about 10am, when pupils and staff began experiencing breathing difficulties and fainting.

“The pupils and staff started inhaling the gas and began to have difficulty breathing. Some of them fainted and were rushed to hospitals,” the teacher said.

The teacher added that some schools in Ago-Iwoye had to close around 11am as the situation became increasingly alarming.

“The worst-hit schools include Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School and Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode. Some parents who heard about the incident also came to pick up their children because nobody knew what was happening,” the teacher said.

The teacher expressed concern that the gas emissions had been recurring since April, exposing pupils and school staff to repeated health risks.

“We are all anxious about our health and that of our pupils. I think it is taking the government too long to get to the root of this mysterious gas leakage. The government has to do something quickly before it gets too late,” the teacher added.

Wednesday’s incident was the fourth reported occurrence of the gaseous emissions in the Ijebu area since April, renewing concerns over the safety of pupils and residents.

However, the state government has assured the residents that the situation “is under control.”

In April, about 40 pupils were reportedly affected, while more than 120 others were hospitalised following another exposure in May. Another incident on June 1 reportedly left 69 pupils needing medical attention.

Schools previously affected included Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Epe Garage, Ijebu-Ode, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, and St Anthony Grammar School, Ijebu-Imusin, among others.

Following an earlier occurrence, Governor Dapo Abiodun said the state government was working with the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, and the Department of Geology at Olabisi Onabanjo University to establish the cause of the emissions.

Abiodun said gas analysers had been installed in affected schools after the first incident and that preliminary findings identified the substance as methane.

“Preliminary findings suggest there may be geological factors involved, possibly fault lines common to these locations, which could be responsible for the emissions.

We are awaiting the final report from the professionals handling the investigation,” the governor said in June.

When contacted on Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the government was on top of the situation.

Also speaking, a senior special assistant to the governor and general manager of the Ogun State Environmental Agency, Kehinde Bello, who visited affected areas in Ijebu-Ode and Ijebu-Igbo, linked the latest incident to underground gas emissions previously recorded in the area.

Bello said the situation was under control, assuring residents that the government would find a lasting solution to the recurring problem.

He said government investigations had indicated that the phenomenon was a natural occurrence associated with geological and tectonic fault lines, rather than sabotage or a gas pipeline leak.

Bello urged residents to remain calm, adding that the affected pupils were expected to recover after receiving medical attention.

He also advised residents exposed to the odour to cover their noses and mouths with wet handkerchiefs rather than wear nose masks.

PUNCH Metro reports that medical personnel were attending to the affected students at various hospitals as of the time of filing this report.

The latest incident has heightened concerns over the recurring emissions and the potential risks to children, teachers and other residents, amid calls for the government to establish the precise source and implement a lasting solution.
