Justice ministry lawyers’ robe allowance rises 233% to N1m

Published

on

The Federal Government has increased the annual robe allowance for state counsel and legal officers in the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria from the previously reported N300,000 to N1m.

The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission disclosed this in a circular dated July 14, 2026, signed by its Acting Secretary, Adighiogu A. Chiadi, and addressed to ministers, permanent secretaries, heads of federal commissions, agencies and government-owned companies, among others.

The commission said the review was approved by the Federal Government as part of a new allowance structure for State Counsel and Legal Officers in the Federal Public Service.

The circular, titled “Review of Robe Allowance for State Counsel and Legal Officers in the Federal Public Service,” stated, “The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the review of Robe Allowance for State Counsel and Legal Officers in the Federal Public Service.”

Under the new arrangement, State Counsel and legal officers employed in the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria will receive N1m per annum.

The commission also approved N600,000 annually for lawyers employed as legal officers in other ministries, departments and agencies who perform strictly legal functions.

The circular stated, “N1,000,000.00 per annum for both the state counsel and legal officers employed in the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria; and N600,000.00 per annum for lawyers employed as legal officers in other ministries, departments and agencies who perform strictly legal functions.”

The revised rates will take effect from January 1, 2027, with the commission directing the affected MDAs to fund the payments from their overhead allocations.

According to the circular, “The revised rates take effect from 1st January 2027, and will be funded from the overhead cost of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies.”

The new N1m rate represents an increase of N700,000, or about 233 per cent, over the N300,000 robe allowance previously reported for lawyers in the ministry.

The N600,000 approved for legal officers in other MDAs also represents a 100 per cent increase over the N300,000 previously reported for lawyers in the justice ministry.

The earlier N300,000 rate was disclosed in 2021 by the then Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), during the ministry’s budget defence before the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Human Rights and Legal Matters.

Malami had disclosed that about 860 lawyers in the ministry were entitled to N300,000 each annually as robe allowance, putting the total expenditure at about N258m.

However, the latest NSIWC circular does not expressly state the previous allowance applicable to each category of legal officer covered by the new review.

The N300,000 figure is therefore the previously reported rate for lawyers in the Justice Ministry and should not be interpreted as a confirmed former rate for every category listed in the new circular.

Robe allowance is intended to support lawyers who are required to appear in court in the prescribed professional attire while representing the Federal Government or its agencies.

The latest review comes amid broader adjustments to public-sector remuneration and allowances as the Federal Government continues to review compensation arrangements across the public service.

The commission directed that all enquiries concerning the implementation of the new rates be forwarded to it.

The circular stated, “All enquiries concerning this circular should be directed to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.”

VIDEO: Some Nigerian pastors stage miracles – Prophet Odumeje

Published

on

Popular Anambra-based cleric Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, widely known as Odumeje, has alleged that numerous pastors in Nigeria routinely stage fake miracles to deceive congregants.

Speaking on a new episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, Odumeje expressed concerns over the prevalence of manufactured miracles, explaining why he consistently declines invitations to minister at other churches.

“Arrangees [staged miracles] in churches are becoming too much in Nigeria. That is why I don’t go to other clerics’ churches as guest minister. I have turned down a lot of invitations,” Odumeje stated.

The controversial cleric maintained that the healing miracles performed in his own ministry are genuine and easily verifiable through documented testimonies and participant details.

“The miracles we do here, we see their faces. You can take their names and verify,” he said.

Odumeje further claimed that no other living Nigerian Christian cleric matches his spiritual capabilities, singling out the late Prophet T.B. Joshua as his “father in the Lord” as the only exception.

Foreigners are now seeking Nigerian passports – Abike Dabiri-Erewa says

Published

on

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, says her office has received numerous appeals from foreign nationals interested in obtaining Nigerian passports.

Dabiri-Erewa made this known at a press briefing in Abuja, on Wednesday, October 21.

Dabiri-Erewa said the volume of requests had become significant, with some applicants asking her office to approach the President on their behalf. She stated that many of these foreigners have developed interest in Nigeria while others are considering investments and stronger connections with the country.

“On my table, you see a lot of people telling us to beg the President to be able to give them Nigerian passports. Ask the Minister of Interior. It’s too much,” she said

To illustrate her point, she recalled a woman who told her team during a recorded interaction that she had visited Nigeria and did not want to return to her country of residence.

Ogun schools shut, over 100 pupils hospitalised after deadly Gas leak

Published

on

The Ogun State Government has again shut some schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo after more than 100 pupils were reportedly hospitalised on Wednesday following exposure to an offensive gaseous substance.

The affected pupils were taken to the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, the General Hospital, Ijebu-Igbo, and other healthcare facilities for treatment.

Among the worst-hit schools were Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, Itamerin Comprehensive High School, and Ago-Iwoye.

A video circulating on social media showed some pupils fainting and being rushed to hospitals after inhaling the substance, which the state government had previously identified as methane.

A teacher at one of the affected schools, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, said the incident occurred at about 10am, when pupils and staff began experiencing breathing difficulties and fainting.

“The pupils and staff started inhaling the gas and began to have difficulty breathing. Some of them fainted and were rushed to hospitals,” the teacher said.

The teacher added that some schools in Ago-Iwoye had to close around 11am as the situation became increasingly alarming.

“The worst-hit schools include Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School and Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode. Some parents who heard about the incident also came to pick up their children because nobody knew what was happening,” the teacher said.

The teacher expressed concern that the gas emissions had been recurring since April, exposing pupils and school staff to repeated health risks.

“We are all anxious about our health and that of our pupils. I think it is taking the government too long to get to the root of this mysterious gas leakage. The government has to do something quickly before it gets too late,” the teacher added.

Wednesday’s incident was the fourth reported occurrence of the gaseous emissions in the Ijebu area since April, renewing concerns over the safety of pupils and residents.

However, the state government has assured the residents that the situation “is under control.”

In April, about 40 pupils were reportedly affected, while more than 120 others were hospitalised following another exposure in May. Another incident on June 1 reportedly left 69 pupils needing medical attention.

Schools previously affected included Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Epe Garage, Ijebu-Ode, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, and St Anthony Grammar School, Ijebu-Imusin, among others.

Following an earlier occurrence, Governor Dapo Abiodun said the state government was working with the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, and the Department of Geology at Olabisi Onabanjo University to establish the cause of the emissions.

Abiodun said gas analysers had been installed in affected schools after the first incident and that preliminary findings identified the substance as methane.

“Preliminary findings suggest there may be geological factors involved, possibly fault lines common to these locations, which could be responsible for the emissions.

We are awaiting the final report from the professionals handling the investigation,” the governor said in June.

When contacted on Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the government was on top of the situation.

Also speaking, a senior special assistant to the governor and general manager of the Ogun State Environmental Agency, Kehinde Bello, who visited affected areas in Ijebu-Ode and Ijebu-Igbo, linked the latest incident to underground gas emissions previously recorded in the area.

Bello said the situation was under control, assuring residents that the government would find a lasting solution to the recurring problem.

He said government investigations had indicated that the phenomenon was a natural occurrence associated with geological and tectonic fault lines, rather than sabotage or a gas pipeline leak.

Bello urged residents to remain calm, adding that the affected pupils were expected to recover after receiving medical attention.

He also advised residents exposed to the odour to cover their noses and mouths with wet handkerchiefs rather than wear nose masks.

PUNCH Metro reports that medical personnel were attending to the affected students at various hospitals as of the time of filing this report.

The latest incident has heightened concerns over the recurring emissions and the potential risks to children, teachers and other residents, amid calls for the government to establish the precise source and implement a lasting solution.
