Barca eye Osimhen as Atletico frustrate Alvarez move

Published

on

La Liga giants FC Barcelona are reportedly shifting their attention to Victor Osimhen after Atlético Madrid reinforced their stance on keeping Julián Álvarez, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Barcelona had identified Álvarez as their primary target for the summer transfer window, but the Atlético striker is proving difficult to prise away, according to reports in Spain via Football España.

The Catalan club are exploring both Álvarez and Osimhen as potential replacements for veteran forward Robert Lewandowski.

Álvarez is reportedly valued at €200m, and any deal in that region would rank among the most expensive transfers ever, behind only Neymar’s €222m move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

Atlético signed the striker for €95m in the summer of 2024 and are unwilling to sell unless an offer exceeds €100m. Barcelona, meanwhile, are said to be prepared to offer around €70m, a figure well below Atlético’s valuation.

The report also highlights Barcelona’s financial constraints as a major obstacle in any move for Álvarez, with the club considering a player-plus-cash offer—an approach Atlético are expected to reject.

“The main issue is that Barcelona will struggle to spend as heavily as they have previously on a single position, given their ongoing financial difficulties.

“Furthermore, they have several areas to strengthen during the summer transfer window, meaning their funds must be spread across the squad.

“Nevertheless, Barcelona are prepared to move for Álvarez by offering a player-plus-cash deal to reduce the immediate financial outlay, although this is unlikely to appeal to Atlético.”

With negotiations for Álvarez appearing increasingly difficult, Barcelona are now turning their focus to Osimhen, who is valued at around €75m.

That figure is in line with what Galatasaray SK paid for the Nigerian striker last summer, although it remains unclear whether the Turkish club would demand a higher fee to part with their talisman.

“If Atleti continue to take a hard-line stance, which is expected, it would make sense for Barcelona to explore alternatives.

Victor Osimhen is one of the players under consideration, and he is viewed as a more attainable option than the 2022 World Cup winner,” the report added.

Atlético are no longer under the same financial pressure as in previous years, reducing the likelihood of a forced sale and further complicating Barcelona’s pursuit of Álvarez.

While they have no immediate plans to sell, Atlético could reconsider if a significantly improved offer arrives. However, Barcelona are now aware that any realistic chance of signing the Argentina international would require a bid exceeding €100m.

Deontay Wilder Challenges Anthony Joshua After Win Over Chisora

Published

on

Deontay Wilder wasted no time reigniting talk of a blockbuster heavyweight clash with Anthony Joshua after beating Derek Chisora at the The O2 Arena on Sunday night.

Joshua watched from ringside as Wilder outlasted veteran Chisora in a bruising bout that marked the American’s return to winning ways and silenced fresh retirement talk.

Moments after leaving the ring, Wilder spotted Joshua nearby. The pair exchanged a respectful bump before Wilder made his intentions clear. He said, “Let’s do it.”

Joshua held his gaze and offered no reply, creating a tense moment that quickly set social media buzzing. Later, the heavyweights crossed paths again in a corridor but ignored each other in another awkward exchange.

The long-awaited bout has come close several times but never materialised. Naija News reports that Joshua’s comeback has been uncertain following the deaths of close friends Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele in a car accident in Nigeria last December.

The British-Nigerian star has now returned to full training, linking up with the team of former unified champion Oleksandr Usyk as he prepares for his first fight since the crash.

Joshua’s last outing ended with a knockout win over Jake Paul, though injuries from the accident pushed the British boxer’s 2026 plans back. He is expected to return in July, with a potential mega-fight against Tyson Fury also under consideration.

Wilder insists he wants Joshua next. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said, “Put up or shut up, baby.

“I’m ready and back now. A healed Wilder is a dangerous Wilder. I’ll come anywhere in the world to fight.”

Top Performing Nigerian Footballers Abroad Last Weekend: Iheanacho, Onuachu, Others

Published

on

Nigerian footballers left their mark across Europe at the weekend, with decisive goals, assists and standout displays shaping key results for their clubs.

In Scotland, Kelechi Iheanacho ended months of frustration with a match-winning strike for Celtic in a vital win over Dundee FC at Dens Park.

The forward, who was introduced after the break, buried Marcelo Saracchi’s cross to seal the points and keep Celtic within touching distance of Heart of Midlothian, with Rangers also in the title mix. It was his first goal since scoring against Motherwell in October, ending a six-month injury-hit drought.

In England, Chiamaka Nnadozie produced a commanding performance as Brighton Women stunned Arsenal Women 2-0 in the Women’s FA Cup quarter-final. The goalkeeper made three crucial saves to frustrate Arsenal before Brighton struck twice after the interval to knock out the European champions.

At the City Ground, Joy Omewa saw her scoring run halted as Nottingham Forest Women drew 1-1 with Newcastle Women, though the striker has three goals in seven matches since her winter arrival.

In France, Moses Simon impressed during Paris FC’s 1-1 draw with Lorient, helping his side move closer to Ligue 1 safety. Defender Chidozie Awaziem played every minute as Nantes held Metz to a goalless draw despite being reduced to ten men, though relegation fears remain.

In Italy, David Okereke featured for Cremonese in a narrow 2-1 defeat to Bologna. Ebenezer Akinsanmiro came off the bench for Pisa in their loss to Torino, while Rafiu Durosinmi remained suspended.

Spain produced a direct Nigerian contribution as Umar Sadiq provided an assist in Valencia’s 3-2 defeat to Celta Vigo, setting up Guido Rodríguez deep into stoppage time. At Sevilla, Akor Adams started, and Chidera Ejuke came off the bench in a 1-0 loss to Real Oviedo.

In Cyprus, Peter Olayinka played 67 minutes as APOEL beat Aris Limassol 2-1 in their title push.

In Turkey, Trabzonspor striker, Paul Onuachu, set a new record on Saturday, April 4, after scoring a goal in his side’s Turkish Super Lig 2-1 win against Victor Osimhen’s Galatasaray team.

Onuachu scored his first-ever goal against Galatasaray as Trabzonspor claimed all three points at Papara Park. He rose highest to head home a pinpoint cross from Wagner Pina earlier in the first half.

His goals against Galatasaray were a landmark moment for him after he had previously been unable to score against the Turkish Super Lig champions in any of their previous meetings.

Published

Al Nassr forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, moved another step closer to football history after reaching 967 career goals in Al-Nassr’s emphatic 5–2 victory over Al-Najma in the Saudi Pro League on Saturday.

Returning from a month-long injury absence, the Portuguese forward showed no signs of rust as he delivered a decisive second-half performance.

According to Fabrizio Romano’s X post on Saturday, “Cristiano Ronaldo returns from injury, scores a crucial penalty and brace for Al Nassr. 967th career goals reached.”

After missing recent matches due to a hamstring issue, Ronaldo marked his comeback in style, underlining his enduring influence at the top level.

Despite facing the league’s bottom side, Al-Nassr were initially stunned as Al-Najma took a surprise lead.

However, the hosts responded just before the break, with Sadio Mane and Abdullah Al Hamdan both finding the net in first-half stoppage time to turn the game around.

Ronaldo then took control after the interval.

He calmly converted a penalty in the 56th minute to restore Al-Nassr’s advantage after the visitors had briefly equalised.

The veteran forward later added another goal, his second of the night, to bring his career tally to 967 and put the result beyond doubt.

Mane also grabbed his second goal as Al-Nassr sealed a comfortable win.

The victory marked a 13th consecutive league triumph for Al-Nassr, strengthening their position at the top of the table and extending their lead over rivals Al-Hilal.

With 966 career goals, Ronaldo edges ever closer to the unprecedented 1,000-goal milestone, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest goal scorers in football history.
