Otti, Labour Party reject Abure’s 2027 nomination forms sale

Published

on

A fresh power tussle has erupted in the Labour Party as Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and the party’s national leadership clash with embattled former National Chairman, Julius Abure, over sales of nomination forms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abure was accused of acting in defiance of court rulings and the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The controversy followed photographs which went viral on social media showing Abure presenting what he described as Labour Party nomination forms to a former National Vice Chairman of the party, Ceekay Igara, and other party members in Abia State.

Reacting on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, warned aspirants and party supporters against obtaining nomination forms from Abure, describing the documents as “worthless paper.”

He said, “Let it be stated clearly and unequivocally that Nenadi Usman is the National Chairman of the Labour Party, and all legitimate nomination forms for every elective position ahead of the 2027 general elections can only be obtained through the official national secretariat of the party located in Utako, Abuja.

“Consequently, any so-called Labour Party nomination form obtained from Julius Abure or any other unauthorised source is nothing but worthless paper being peddled by political fraudsters seeking to deceive unsuspecting persons.”

The party further questioned why Abure’s alleged sales activities were concentrated in Abia State, warning that Otti would not succumb to “blackmail, intimidation or street-corner political theatrics.”

It also accused Abure of criminal impersonation for continuing to parade himself as the party’s national chairman.

The warning came hours after Otti, through his Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Ukoha, criticised Abure for continuing to issue nomination forms despite what he described as existing court rulings recognising Usman as the party’s interim leader.

Ukoha told our correspondent that both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal had ruled in favour of the Usman-led leadership structure, adding that INEC had already complied with the court directive.

He said, “I think Abure is in a better position to explain the grounds on which he is still parading himself after a Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal ruled that Senator Nenadi Usman was the interim leader of the Labour Party before the convention.

“So, the party has moved on. INEC has also complied with the directive of a competent court of jurisdiction. That is contempt of court on the part of Julius Abure.”

Ukoha also argued that INEC could not legitimately monitor any electoral process conducted under Abure’s authority.

However, Igara defended the issuance of the forms, saying the action was a precautionary move pending the outcome of cases before the courts.

According to him, stakeholders were trying to avoid a vacuum should the Supreme Court eventually rule in favour of Abure.

He said, “We have two matters, one at the Supreme Court and the other at the Federal High Court.

“If we say Abure should be docile, all the 33 states that conducted congresses will just go into extinction. If the Supreme Court later gives him the structure and primaries have closed, what happens?”

Igara added that consultations were ongoing and that the forms were only being distributed ahead of future primaries.

Efforts to reach Abure for comment were unsuccessful as calls and messages to his phone were not returned at the time of filing this report.

Defending their position, spokesman for the Abure group, Obiora Ifoh, insisted that they remained the legitimate leadership of the party pending the final determination of the matter by the Supreme Court.

He said, “Our matter is in court. Until the Supreme Court decides the actual leadership, we believe that the Nnewi Convention that elected Abure and the NWC, which has not been discharged, is still running.

“So, we believe that our leadership, which has four years tenure, has not expired. Therefore, we will continue to function as a political party until the matter is resolved conclusively in the apex court.”

On allegations that Abure’s actions amounted to contempt of court, Ifoh dismissed the claim, saying, “No, we are in order. Just like what is happening in some other political parties where factions are selling nomination forms, we are not left out.”

Ifoh also confirmed that he was contesting for the House of Representatives seat for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections.

He further denied claims that nomination forms were only being sold in Abia State.

“It is not true that Abure is selling Expression of interest and nomination forms only in Abia. We are selling in all the 36 states of the federation,” he added.

Peter Obi reveals he might not be alive to contest in 2027 – Read details

Published

on

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, says he may not be alive to contest the poll, alleging that the government is frustrating his activities and targeting opposition figures.

Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude, which media personality Chude Jideonwo posted on X on Wednesday.

Responding to a question on whether there was a possibility he might not be a candidate in 2027, Obi said, “Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you.

“Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive.”

He, however, clarified that he was not making direct accusations but described daily experiences of obstruction.

“It’s not an accusation. I know. I get frustration every day. Because you do things that you think would be normal—it is not normal anymore.

“They won’t come directly and say, ‘Oh, we’re doing this,’ but you can see their hand in virtually everything,” Obi said.

Asked whether the government was attacking him personally, the former Anambra State governor said the alleged treatment extended to members of the opposition.

“They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally. I am being attacked personally. Everything. Even to provide me with necessary things that I should have been entitled to, not at all,” he said.

Obi cited an incident at an airport where he claimed officials locked his car despite other vehicles being parked in the same area.

“I had a case recently at the airport, where people who work in the airport came and locked my car. And I said, ‘It’s me.’ The person in charge said he doesn’t care.

“But I said, ‘Look at the cars of other people.’ And you could see them talking to each other, as if, ‘Who is this one?’”

He further alleged that some people now avoided publicly associating with him for fear of becoming targets.

“And I see people I know at the airport, they will not greet me because they are fearing that if they greet me…”

The former Labour Party presidential candidate also claimed that some supporters had discouraged him from attending family events.

“And I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don’t come,’” he said.

Obi did not provide evidence to support his allegations during the interview, and the Federal Government had yet to respond to his claims as of the time of filing this report.

Oyo APC members protest over N’Assembly list

Published

on

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State have called on the state party leadership to affirm Abiodun Gbolagade as the winner of the recent primary election for the Oluyole Federal Constituency.

The party members and stakeholders from the federal constituency made the appeal during a peaceful protest at the state party secretariat in Oke-Ado, Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, on Tuesday.

Speaking during the protest, Gbolagade said he had been financing party activities in the local government for the past seven years, claiming that, “The primary election for Oluyole Federal Constituency was conducted successfully, and I was declared winner with over 2,000 votes, while the incumbent, Hon. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, polled 36 votes.

“I want to urge the party leadership to strictly adhere to the results as announced, as this would strengthen unity and improve the APC’s chances in the 2027 general elections in the state,” he said.

Also speaking, a retired civil servant, Mr Awo Adeleke, insisted that “Gbolagade won the primary election and should be issued the party’s ticket for the House of Representatives election.”

Another protester, who did not want her name in print, said, “For the past eight years, Sadipe has neglected us, party members. That is why we have pitched our tents with Gbolagade, who we believe can ensure victory for the party.

“We are here to appeal to the leadership of the Oyo APC to strictly follow the outcome of the primary election, which declared Gbolagade the winner, and not Sadipe.”

Addressing the protesters, the Oyo APC Chairman, Moses Adeyemo, appealed to them to remain calm.

Adeyemo, who described Gbolagade as a committed party member who had “paid his dues” to the APC over the years, assured the protesters that the party leadership would review their demands and take the necessary steps to maintain peace and fairness within the party.

The PUNCH reports that the APC, on Monday, reiterated that the list of its candidates for the National Assembly seats in the 2027 general elections remained unchanged.

A statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, in Ibadan, the state capital, said, “The list emanated from the National Working Committee of the party, which processed the results generated from the primaries conducted in May this year.

“The national secretariat of the APC has uploaded the names of its candidates for the three senatorial districts and 14 House of Representatives seats in Oyo State on the Independent National Electoral Commission portal as required by law, and this was followed by the filing of the commission’s nomination forms by the individual candidates at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja.”

Sadare said he was surprised that “some aspirants who did not secure the desired party tickets were reported to be misleading the public with fake claims through social media, even as their supporters do more to create a crisis within the party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, nothing has changed from what was made public last week. The names submitted to INEC are as follows: Senator Yunus Akintunde, Hon. Aderemi Oseni and Mrs Hannah Ogunesan as candidates for Oyo Central, Oyo South and Oyo North Senatorial Districts, respectively, while House of Representatives candidates are: Hon. Akeem Adeyemi (Afijio/Atiba/Oyo East/Oyo West), Hon. Segun Odebunmi (Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere), Hon. Tajudeen Abisodun Kareem (Atisbo/Saki East/Saki West).”

Other candidates, according to Sadare, are: “Hon. Akin Alabi (Egbeda/Ona-Ara), Hon. Olafisoye Akinmoyede (Akinyele/Lagelu), Hon. Folake Olunloyo-Oshinowo (Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West), Hon. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe (Oluyole), Hon. Olamijuwon Alao-Akala (Ogbomoso North/Ogbomoso South/Oriire), Hon. Olatubosun Oladele (Irepo/Olorunsogo/Oorelope), Hon. Umar Farouk Alao (Ibadan North), Hon. Ibrahim Iyiola (Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East), Hon. Sarafa Olaoniye (Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North), Hon. Saheed Adejare Yusuf (Kajola/Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Iwajowa) and Hon. Yusuf Asimiyu Osuolale (Ibarapa East/Ido).”

APC first-term govs back Tinubu, seek continuity beyond 2027

Published

on

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who are serving their first term have unanimously endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office, declaring their support for the continuation of the Renewed Hope agenda beyond the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of APC first-term governors held in Kebbi State on Tuesday.

The governors said their decision was informed by the need for policy continuity, economic stability and sustained national reforms, stressing that their support for the President went beyond partisan politics.

“Our support for President Bola Tinubu is not based on politics alone.

“It is based on the conviction that Nigeria requires courageous leadership, policy continuity, stronger federal-state collaboration and a development path that rewards production, enterprise, agriculture, innovation and hard work,” the communiqué stated.

The governors acknowledged the economic hardship being experienced by many Nigerians but argued that the reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration were necessary to reposition the country’s economy.

“We acknowledge the sacrifices Nigerians have made in this period of economic adjustment. Families, workers, farmers, traders, transporters, young people, women and vulnerable citizens have all felt the weight of current realities. We do not dismiss these difficulties,” they said.

According to the communiqué, the governors declared their “total support” for Tinubu and backed the continuity of his administration beyond 2027.

“We declare our total support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and for the continuity of the Renewed Hope agenda beyond 2027.

“We make this declaration as a commitment to national recovery, shared prosperity, democratic stability and the protection of the Nigerian federation,” they stated.

The APC governors also urged Nigerians to remain patient with the ongoing reforms, saying the country should not abandon policies which were laying the foundation for long-term prosperity.

“The real question is whether Nigeria should abandon reform midway or stay the course, correct what needs correction, expand relief for the vulnerable, and allow the foundations being laid to produce lasting results,” the communique read.

The APC governors also commended the President for taking what they described as difficult but necessary decisions in the national interest and urged the Federal Government to continue expanding interventions aimed at easing hardship, particularly in food production, transportation, social protection, rural livelihoods and security.

On security, the governors expressed concern over persistent insecurity across parts of the country, including kidnapping, terrorism, banditry and attacks on schools.

They condemned the abduction of children and attacks on innocent citizens, pledging stronger collaboration among the federal and state governments, security agencies, traditional institutions and community leaders to improve security.

“We condemn, in the strongest terms, the abduction of children, kidnapping of innocent citizens, attacks on schools, killing of vulnerable persons and all acts of terror and criminality that undermine education, economic life, public confidence and national peace,” the governors noted.

The governors further acknowledged that their support for Tinubu must be matched by improved performance in their respective states.

“We shall not merely ask Nigerians to support the President; we shall give Nigerians reasons to believe by working harder, delivering visible results and ensuring that federal reforms translate into local benefits,” the statement noted.

They pledged to prioritise agriculture and food security, education, healthcare, rural infrastructure, youth and women empowerment, job creation, investment promotion, energy access, revenue reforms and transparent governance.

They concluded by resolving to seek re-election based on their records in office.

“Our re-election efforts shall be anchored on performance, not propaganda; service, not sentiment; unity, not division; and results, not noise.

“We shall go to our people, present our records, listen to their concerns, correct our shortcomings and seek their continued trust in the interest of stability and development,” the governors said.

The meeting also addressed reports of attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, with the governors condemning xenophobia and calling on South African authorities to protect foreign residents and ensure justice for victims.

The communiqué was signed by all the APC first-term governors who met in Kebbi State on Tuesday.
