5 pregnant teenagers and 10 others rescued as Anambra government shuts down baby factory

Published

on

No fewer than 5 pregnant teenagers and 10 others have been rescued as Anambra Stae government shut down a notorious baby factory syndicate operating under the guise of a hospital in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

The illegal facility, known as Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity, located at 1 School Road near Tansian University, was reportedly sealed on Saturday following a raid that commenced Friday.

The operation followed months of surveillance and intelligence gathering by the state Ministry of Health in collaboration with security agencies.

Addressing journalists at the facility, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, said that during the raid, officials reportedly arrested key staff and operators of the facility, rescued five pregnant teenagers and 10 others.

Obidike said the government discovered that the establishment was being used for “medical malpractices” and illegal adoption activities.

He described the so-called hospital as fraudulent, revealing it was operating with a forged medical license and run by a self-proclaimed doctor from Delta State.

According to Obidike, “This crackdown is a significant victory in the ongoing battle against child trafficking, human rights violations, and gender-based abuse.”

He confirmed that the facility was deeply involved in the trafficking and exploitation of girls aged between 15 and 21, many of whom were allegedly held against their will and forced into pregnancies.

Newborns from these forced pregnancies were sold through illegal adoption rings, according to the health commissioner.

The state government is committed to shutting down all illegal medical establishments and safeguarding public health,” Obidike said.

“This operation underscores the importance of collaboration between security agencies and health regulators.

“We are determined to rid Anambra State of fake medical practitioners and criminal networks that exploit the vulnerable.”

The Commissioner credited the success of the raid to the efforts of the State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit and the State Illegal and Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team.

He said the bodies were set up to identify and eliminate unauthorized health facilities across the state.

Obidike called on residents to support the government’s efforts by reporting suspicious medical activities, adding, “Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation, and suspects are expected to face charges including human trafficking, unlawful detention, and child exploitation.”

Issuing a stern warning to unregistered medical outfits, Obidike said, “We are issuing a stern warning to operators of unlicensed and quack facilities in the state.

“Shut down now or face the full weight of the law. We will not compromise the safety and dignity of our people.”

The acting Director of Medical Services, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, was among senior health officials who participated in the raid.

The rescued teenage girls and infants are currently receiving medical care and psychological support under government supervision.

Several hurt, one in ‘cardiac arrest’ in S. Korea market stabbing

Published

on

One person was in cardiac arrest and several others were wounded in a stabbing incident on Tuesday at a supermarket in South Korea’s coastal city of Incheon, authorities told AFP.

“One person is in cardiac arrest and around seven others have been injured,” an official from the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters said.

Local media reported that a male suspect had been arrested.

South Korea is generally considered a safe country, with a homicide rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people in 2021, according to official statistics, well below the global average of about six per 100,000.

The country has, however, seen a number of stabbing attacks in recent years.

In May 2025, a man stabbed three police officers, while three people were stabbed to death at a Seoul pizza restaurant that September.

Policemen in viral Ekiti extortion video face discipline in Abuja

Published

on

Police officers attached to the Ekiti State Command who were captured in a viral video during a confrontation with a motorcyclist are undergoing disciplinary proceedings at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The Police Complaint Response Unit disclosed this in an update posted on X on Tuesday, saying the action followed a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.

The update, linked to complaint tracking number CRU100953, read, “The officers in the viral video attached to Ekiti State Police Command are now at the Police Complaint Response Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja, undergoing disciplinary actions as directed by the IGP, Tunji Disu.”

The development follows a complaint received by the Ekiti State Police Command on October 6 from representatives of the Biker Association, Federal University Oye-Ekiti chapter, over the alleged extortion and intimidation of one of its members.

In a statement issued on October 7, the command said the biker was allegedly intercepted by a police patrol team while riding alone from Itapa to Ikole-Ekiti and subjected to a demand for money under circumstances the complainants considered improper.

The command said it had identified the officers involved and taken them into custody for questioning as part of its investigation into allegations of extortion, intimidation, disobedience to lawful orders and other acts of unprofessional conduct.

It added that the investigation had been transferred to the State Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti for a comprehensive and impartial probe.

The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, Falade Micheal, directed that the officers be subjected to appropriate disciplinary procedures in line with police regulations, subject to the outcome of the investigation.

The command said, “The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns all forms of extortion, intimidation, abuse of authority and other conduct capable of undermining public confidence or bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.”

It added that no police officer was authorised to demand or collect money from members of the public while carrying out legitimate police duties.

The viral footage shows a confrontation between a motorcyclist and a police officer over a roadworthiness check.

The rider appears to resist a demand for money reportedly put at ₦20,000, while the officer speaks to him beside his motorcycle.

Text accompanying the video also alleges that the officer threatened the rider during the encounter.

The police have not disclosed the outcome of the investigation or the specific sanctions the officers may face.
