Finnish court jails Simon Ekpa six years for terrorism offences

Published

on

The Päijät-Häme District Court on Monday sentenced Nigerian-born Finnish, Simon Ekpa, to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes and other offences, according to official court documents seen by BBC News Pidgin on Monday.

The 40-year-old former municipal politician from Lahti was convicted on multiple charges, including participation in the activities of a terrorist organisation, incitement to commit crimes for terrorist purposes, aggravated tax fraud, and violations of the Lawyers Act.

The court ordered that Ekpa remain in custody.

According to the judgment, between August 2021 and November 2024, Ekpa attempted to promote the independence of the so-called Biafra region in southeastern Nigeria through illegal means.

“He used social media to gain a politically influential position and took advantage of the confusion within a key separatist movement in Nigeria to play a significant role in it,” the court statement stated as reported by BBC News pidgin.

Ekpa denied all the charges against him.

The court also found that Ekpa was instrumental in founding and developing the separatist movement into a more organised structure, working alongside others.

It was revealed during the trial that armed groups were established under the movement, which the court classified as terrorist organisations.

“Ekpa equipped the groups with weapons, explosives and ammunition through his contact network. He also urged and enticed his followers on X (formerly Twitter) to commit crimes in Nigeria,” the court said.

The trial was conducted over 12 sessions between May 30 and June 25, 2025, with a panel of three judges unanimously delivering the verdict.

Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa in December 2024 on charges linked to terrorism.

He was held on probable cause and suspicion of publicly inciting people to commit crimes with terrorist intent.

The alleged offences were said to have occurred between August 23, 2021, and November 2024, primarily in the city of Lahti.

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation also initially arrested four other men in connection with the case. However, charges against them were later dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Ekpa, who previously served as a municipal councillor in Lahti, is widely known for his controversial role in the Biafran separatist movement.

His online broadcasts and social media activity have drawn both support and condemnation within and outside Nigeria.

Three Lagos labourers found dead in makeshift apartment

Published

on

Three yet-to-be-identified male adults have been found dead in their apartment on Olateju Street in the Lekki Phase One area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, where the victims reportedly lived together in a makeshift room.

It was gathered that the deceased were casual workers who earned a living by running errands and taking up daily labour within the neighbourhood.

A resident who identified himself simply as Alfred but pleaded not to be identified because he was not permitted to speak with the media said the victims were asleep when the attackers stormed their room.

According to him, the attackers dragged them out of the room and macheted them to death in the process.

He said, “The boys lived in a makeshift structure erected on the premises of a building on the street. We knew them to be labourers who also ran errands for people. But on Sunday morning, one of their colleagues who also stayed around there raised the alarm over an attack on the boys. When people rushed there, the three of them were found lying in a pool of blood with machete cuts all over their bodies. We were told the assailants dragged them out of the room before killing them.”

Another resident, who is a member of the Lekki Estate Residents Association but asked not to be named, said the incident threw the area into panic.

He said no such incident had ever been recorded on the street, adding that the police were immediately invited to the scene of the incident.

“We are now more cautious with the security situation around here. Security measures are also being stepped up as I speak to you,” he added.

As of press time, the motive behind the killing was still unclear.

However, we learnt from other sources in the community that it might be linked to cult clashes or a dispute involving the deceased.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached for confirmation, as calls to his phone were not responded to.

A text message sent to him had yet to be replied to as of the time this report was filed.

It was reported in August that a skit maker identified simply as Austin was found dead with machete cuts in the Lakowe community of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that some suspected cultists stormed the area in the early hours of the day in search of the deceased

On locating his apartment, they allegedly dragged him out of his room and hacked him to death on the spot.

PHOTOS: Nigerian troops neutralise 20 terrorists, arrest logistics suppliers in North East

Published

on

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have neutralised no fewer than 20 terrorists and arrested several of their logistics suppliers during week-long offensives across the North East theatre of operations.

The operations, conducted between August 23 to August 30, 2025 were supported by the Air Component and local security outfits.

The Army in a statement on Tuesday, September 2, said the coordinated operations took place in Gujba, Gubio, Sabsawa, Whumtakum in Chibok Local Government Area, Mandarari in Konduga LGA, Gajigana in Magumeri LGA, as well as Konduga, Banki and Loskori Kura in Mafa LGA.

During the offensives, troops neutralised over 20 terrorists across different sectors of OPHK, arrested logistics suppliers and collaborators, and recovered arms, ammunition and other terrorist items.

Recovered items included several AK-47 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenade tubes and bombs, a cache of 7.62mm ammunition, and logistics materials.

Troops also safely detonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and intercepted 242 bags of NPK fertiliser suspected to be destined for IED production.

The sustained pressure by troops has denied the terrorists freedom of action and created an enabling environment for socio-economic activities in the North East.

The military high command commended the troops for their determination and urged them to sustain the momentum in the fight against insurgency.

NCAA seeks EFCC partnership to tackle aviation fraud

Published

on

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to strengthen its efforts in combating economic and financial crimes within the aviation industry.

The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by NCAA Director General, Captain Chris Najomo, and his management team to EFCC Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, at the Commission’s corporate headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

EFCC disclosed the agenda of the visit in a statement posted on its X handle on Tuesday.

Najomo noted the growing threat of fraudulent activities in the aviation sector, which he said pose serious risks to safety oversight and operational transparency.

He identified areas of high-value transactions vulnerable to fraud and money laundering, including aircraft purchases, leasing arrangements, foreign maintenance contracts, and procurement of safety infrastructure.

“Non-remittance weakens the NCAA’s ability to fund safety oversight and operational efficiency and may require EFCC’s intervention to investigate cases where deliberate withholding, diversion or misappropriation of these funds is suspected.

“Some operators deliberately under-report revenues, manipulate ticketing systems or divert funds, thereby sabotaging the NCAA’s ability to regulate effectively. In such cases, EFCC’s intervention is necessary,” Captain Najomo said.

Najomo also flagged illegal charter operations, often disguised as private flights, which involve unregulated financial flows.

He emphasised the need for EFCC’s financial intelligence capabilities to uncover such activities.

On possible solutions, Najomo proposed joint initiatives, including training NCAA staff to detect financial red flags, organising sensitisation workshops, and sharing intelligence to enhance oversight.

The statement said the EFCC boss expressed the Commission’s willingness to delve more into the aviation sector.

He disclosed that the EFCC will designate senior officers to work with the NCAA in finalising an MoU on joint investigations, intelligence exchange, and compliance monitoring.

“With the kind of work you do, when people see us beside you, they will take you seriously. Aviation is an area where we have seen money laundering, particularly through chartered services.

“That is why we have been reaching out to you, and we will continue to do so until we achieve the desired results,” Olukoyede said.

There have been cases of fraud in the aviation sector.

Last month, the Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, narrated how his company suffered a $2m loss to a Tunisia-based leasing company.

In July, EFCC alerted Nigerians to a new scam involving fake airline ticket promos used by fraudsters to steal personal information and siphon money from victims’ bank accounts.
