Vote-buying won’t decide Anambra election – INEC Chairman

Published

on

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), has warned against vote-buying ahead of the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State, assuring that the commission is fully prepared to deliver a free, fair and credible poll.

Amupitan gave the assurance on Tuesday at the meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security  held in Abuja.

Warning against voter inducement, Amupitan vowed that INEC would work closely with security and anti-graft agencies to curb the menace of vote-buying.

“We would like to warn that any attempt to induce voters before or during the Anambra election will be met with the full force of the law. Together, we must combat vote-buying, uphold the values of democracy, and work relentlessly for the credibility of our elections,” he cautioned.

Reaffirming his commitment to credible elections, the INEC Chairman said, “For INEC, this represents a new chapter. I wish to reiterate my personal commitment to delivering free, fair, and credible elections that genuinely reflect the will of the Nigerian people.”

He disclosed that INEC was taking urgent steps to resolve the network challenges encountered during last weekend’s mock accreditation exercise in the state.

The exercise was conducted to test the functionality of the upgraded Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the efficiency of result transmission through the INEC Result Viewing Portal.

“We recently conducted a mock accreditation exercise in 12 selected polling units across six local government areas in Anambra State. Although we encountered some network issues, efforts are underway to ensure a seamless exercise on November 8, 2025. The commission is ready for large-scale deployment on Election Day,” he said.

Amupitan stated that about 24,000 INEC personnel would be deployed across 5,718 polling units, with results collated at 326 ward centres, 21 local government areas, and finally at the State Collation Centre in Awka.

On the issue of voter readiness, Amupitan disclosed that the commission had extended the collection of Permanent Voter Cards in Anambra from Wednesday, October 29 to Sunday, November 2, to allow more eligible voters to collect their cards.

“We are determined that no eligible voter should be disenfranchised,” he added.

The INEC boss commended security agencies for their collaboration in ensuring a peaceful electoral environment, stressing that inter-agency synergy was crucial to maintaining public confidence in the process.

“Synergy among all security agencies is non-negotiable, particularly at a time when the credibility of our elections is paramount,” he said.

He also revealed that the commission had finalised logistics arrangements with transport unions, including the National Association of Road Transport Owners, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, for the movement of election materials and personnel.

“We have hired 200 buses and 83 boats to ensure the smooth transportation of personnel and sensitive materials,” he said.

The meeting, co-chaired by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, represented by the Director of Internal Security in his office, Hassan Abdullahi, brought together top security, intelligence, and law enforcement officials to fine-tune strategies for a smooth and incident-free election.

Amupitan expressed optimism that collective commitment among stakeholders would make the Anambra governorship election a benchmark for electoral integrity.

“The path ahead may be challenging, but if we stand united, there is nothing we cannot achieve,” he said.

INEC noted that about 2.8 million registered voters are expected to participate in the election. Of the 13 activities on the timetable, 11 have already been concluded, with political campaigns ending on November 6 and the governorship poll scheduled for November 8.

The BVAS technology, introduced during the 2023 general elections, is designed to authenticate voters biometrically and transmit results electronically in real time via the IReV portal.

However, challenges experienced during the last general election prompted the commission to strengthen its systems ahead of the Anambra poll.

Buhari wouldn’t have become president without Tinubu’s support — Yari

Published

on

Former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Senator representing Zamfara West, Abdul’aziz Yari, has said that former President Muhammadu Buhari would not have emerged president without the political, strategic and financial support of President Bola Tinubu.

Yari made the assertion on Sunday during his installation as Obaloyin of Yorubaland by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, in Oyo town.

Tribune Online reports that President Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, was also installed at the ceremony as Okanlomo of Yorubaland.

According to Yari, Tinubu played a decisive role in Buhari’s victories in the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections, particularly by mobilising political structures and resources in the South-West.

“The message is very clear. The South-West stood by the North despite all odds, and now it is time for us to pay back,” Yari said.

“President Tinubu fulfilled his promise to former President Buhari. He campaigned vigorously in 2019, and by God’s infinite mercy, Buhari won.

“Some of us know that without President Tinubu’s plans, financial support and political strategy, the North’s dream of ruling through Buhari might not have been realised.”

He further stated that Buhari’s emergence as president in 2015 was largely driven by Tinubu’s political architecture.

“The dream of President Buhari to become president in 2015 was fully architected, designed and financed by Tinubu,” Yari said.

He added that the North had a moral obligation to support Tinubu’s leadership.

“Therefore, we in Northern Nigeria have no option but to follow and fully support him the first time and the second time, by the grace of God,” he said.

Yari expressed confidence in Tinubu’s administration, noting that early signs of governance were encouraging.

“We have started seeing what he is doing, and we pray for his success and for a better Nigeria during his reign,” he added.

Speaking on his newly conferred chieftaincy title, Yari pledged to promote unity and strengthen relations between the North and the South-West.

“With this chieftaincy title, we are sons of this land, and we will do our best to promote its cultural values wherever we find ourselves,” he said.

“I assure Yorubaland that I will serve as an ambassador and ensure that the North-West, North-Central, North-East and South-West remain united and cement this relationship.”

2027: I didn’t endorse Tinubu, my prophecy misinterpreted – Primate Ayodele

Published

on

The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has denied endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the presentation of his 2026 prophecies on Saturday, 20th of December, 2025.

A national newspaper (not TRIBUNE ONLINE) has reported that the prophet endorsed the president at the event.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Primate Ayodele noted that his prophecy was grossly misinterpreted by the news platform, as there was never a time at the presentation that he endorsed President Tinubu for a second term.

The cleric stated that he has no business endorsing anyone for political positions because he isn’t a politician; rather, he is a prophet who speaks the mind of God on national and global issues.

“I have observed that in a national newspaper, I was quoted to have endorsed President Tinubu for a second term in office during the presentation of my 2026 prophecies on Saturday, 20th of December, 2025.

“I find it disturbing, appalling, and mischievous that the national newspaper quoted me out of context despite providing clarifications. Several media organisations were present at the presentation, which clearly heard my position on the next election, and this makes me wonder where this national newspaper obtained its information from.

“For record purposes, I have no business endorsing anyone for political positions; I am not a politician, and I am not seeking favour from President Tinubu; I have no reason to endorse him or anybody for anything. I am a prophet, and my words are from the Lord. The only thing I know how to do is prophesy, not endorsement.”

Setting the record straight, Primate Ayodele explained that he only mentioned that President Tinubu has done better than former President Muhammadu Buhari and that Nigerians will vote for integrity in the next election.

“What I said didn’t in anyway endorse President Tinubu. I mentioned that Tinubu has done better than Buhari and that Nigerians will vote for integrity, not party alone in the next election.

“Putting the right people in the right position come 2027 is what we need. Therefore, Nigerians will not only vote for parties but also for integrity and intelligence. President Ahmed Tinubu has done much better than the former president, late Muhammadu Buhari.

“President Tinubu has good intentions for Nigerians, but the people around him are not actualising what he has committed to their hands. Tinubu means well for everybody, but the people around him are not sincere in carrying out his orders.”

The prophet urged well-meaning Nigerians to dismiss such reports going forward, while urging media practitioners to always uphold the ethics of the profession by seeking clarifications when necessary.

PDP crisis: Turaki bloc seeks court order to unseal secretariat

Published

on

The Kabiru Turaki (SAN)-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking an order directing the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force to immediately unseal and vacate the party’s national secretariat and other offices across the country.

The request is contained in a Motion on Notice filed by the plaintiffs through their lead counsel, Chief Chris Uche (SAN), seeking a mandatory injunction compelling the police to remove all barricades, unseal and withdraw from the PDP national headquarters.

The PDP national secretariat was sealed in November following clashes between two rival factions of the party — one led by Turaki and the other aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The confrontation arose after both factions planned to hold meetings at the party headquarters on the same day. Police intervention followed, during which tear gas was fired, after which the premises were locked and barricaded.

The sealing of the secretariat with barbed-wire barricades prevented the Turaki-led National Working Committee from holding its postponed inaugural meeting.

Turaki emerged as the party’s national chairman at a national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November.

However, the Wike-aligned faction rejected the convention, arguing that it violated subsisting court orders restraining the PDP from holding the exercise.

Earlier, Justices James Omotosho and Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had restrained the party from holding its national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025. In contrast, a High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, subsequently permitted the party to proceed with the convention through an ex parte order.

At the Ibadan convention, the party announced the expulsion of Wike; its embattled national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu; the Wike-aligned factional chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahman; and eight others over allegations of anti-party activities.

Meanwhile, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/252/2025, instituted by the PDP alongside its newly elected national chairman, Turaki, and the chairman of its Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, the plaintiffs are seeking an order restraining the police from invading, sealing, occupying or restricting access to any of the party’s offices in the 36 states of the federation, including the Abuja secretariat and its annex.

The defendants in the suit are the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force.

Specifically, the plaintiffs prayed the court for “an order of mandatory injunction directing the defendants to immediately remove all barricades, unseal and vacate forthwith from the 1st plaintiff’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Plot 1970 Michael Okpara Way, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, including its annex, ‘Legacy House’, at Plot 2774 Shehu Shagari Way, Maitama, Abuja, pending the determination of this suit.”

They also sought “an order restraining the defendants, whether by themselves, their officers, agents, servants or howsoever, from invading, breaking into, sealing, occupying or in any manner whatsoever restricting the plaintiffs’ access to, use or occupation of any of the 1st plaintiff’s offices in the 36 states of the federation, including its national secretariat and annex, pending the determination of this suit.”

In grounds supporting the application, the plaintiffs contended that the police, without lawful authority, invaded, sealed, barricaded with metal wires and occupied the party’s national secretariat and its annex from November 18, 2025, and have remained there since.

They maintained that the 2nd and 3rd plaintiffs are principal officers of the party responsible for its administration and management.

An affidavit in support of the motion was deposed to by the PDP national secretary, Taofik Arapaja, who stated that the party held its elective national convention in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025, where new national officers were elected, including Turaki as national chairman.

He added that the Independent National Electoral Commission was formally notified of the outcome by a letter dated November 17, 2025.

Arapaja said the party merely wrote to security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services, to notify them of an emergency stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for November 18, 2025, and to request adequate security coverage.

He alleged, however, that instead of providing security, a contingent of police officers led by the Commissioner of Police, FCT, arrived at the secretariat on the scheduled date, fired over 200 tear gas canisters and sealed the premises, preventing party officials, staff and visiting governors — including the governors of Bauchi and Oyo states — from gaining access.

According to him, the police action was carried out without any valid court order and amounted to an arbitrary and unlawful occupation of the party’s offices.

The plaintiffs argued that the continued sealing of the secretariat has disrupted the party’s daily operations, including administrative coordination, policy formulation, membership management and election preparations.

They further contended that the police, as a statutory body under the Nigeria Police Act 2020, ought not to act in a partisan manner.

The PDP urged the court to intervene, arguing that the balance of convenience favours granting the application and that monetary damages would not adequately compensate the party if the reliefs sought are refused.

The plaintiffs also maintained that granting the application would serve the interest of justice and prevent the police action from being perceived as sanctioned by the court.
