Lagos AG Debunks Claim That Baba Ijesha Was Cleared

Published

on

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), has dismissed claims circulating online that Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, was freed after being “cleared” by the Court of Appeal.

Pedro, who spoke with journalists in Lagos on Sunday, described the reports — originally shared by actor Yomi Fabiyi and later reproduced by an online medium as “false, misleading and irresponsible.”

He said the claims amounted to a distortion of judicial records and were capable of misleading the public

Pedro clarified that, contrary to social media insinuations, the Court of Appeal did not exonerate Baba Ijesha of the sexual offences for which he was convicted in 2022.

He said, “Mr. Olanrewaju James was not cleared of the offences of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child.”

The Attorney-General noted that the clarification followed Fabiyi’s assertion that the appellate court had declared the entire case a “charade.”

Pedro outlined the complete judicial trail of the case, July 14, 2022: The Lagos State High Court convicted Baba Ijesha for sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child over incidents that occurred in 2021. He received sentences of five years and three years, to run concurrently.

June 28, 2024: The Court of Appeal set aside convictions related to alleged offences from 2013–2014, but upheld the conviction and sentence for the 2021 sexual assault.

May 29, 2025: Baba Ijesha’s appeal to the Supreme Court was struck out for incompetence.

October 9, 2025: His motion for leave to file a fresh appeal was dismissed, leaving the Court of Appeal judgment intact.

Pedro emphasised that the actor’s release was solely due to completing his term of imprisonment, not from any acquittal.

He criticised Yomi Fabiyi and others spreading the misinformation, warning that such actions could cause unnecessary fear and public confusion.

He said the Office of the Attorney-General would not hesitate to prosecute the publication of false news intended to alarm the public, citing Section 39 of the Lagos Criminal Law.

He urged the public to disregard the misleading reports and emphasised the state’s unwavering commitment to child protection and proper enforcement of criminal convictions.

Pedro reiterated that Lagos would continue to safeguard minors and ensure that judicial outcomes are accurately represented.

He added that no individual or platform should trivialise offences against children by circulating unverified claims.

PHOTOS: Nigeria Air Force Hails Pilots Who Ejected From Crashed Jet For Bravery

Published

The Force, in a post on its X handle on Sunday, commended the officers for their “exceptional bravery and professionalism.”

The Nigerian Air Force has shared photos of two pilots who narrowly escaped death after ejecting from their aircraft during an in-flight emergency in Niger State.

The Force, in a post on its X handle on Sunday, commended the officers for their “exceptional bravery and professionalism.”

The incident occurred on Saturday during a routine post-maintenance test flight from Kainji Air Base, when an Alpha Jet aircraft developed a fault.

The pilots safely ejected before the jet crashed near Karabonde village in Borgu Local Government Area.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, had, in an earlier statement on Saturday, also commended the pilots for manoeuvring the jet away from populated areas before ejecting.

He confirmed that both officers were already undergoing routine medical evaluation.

He added that the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, had ordered the immediate constitution of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the incident.

“The Nigerian Air Force reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to stringent safety standards and operational excellence.

“The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding its personnel while protecting the lives and property of citizens in line with its constitutional mandate,” the statement added.

The NAF’s Alpha Jets are primarily used for training and air-to-ground missions and have been deployed extensively in internal security operations across the country.

Talon safe as loyalist forces regain control after brief coup scare

Published

on

Benin’s President Patrice Talon is safe, and security forces are restoring order after a faction of soldiers claimed to have removed him from power, the presidency announced on Sunday.

In a brief statement, the presidency dismissed the soldiers’ declaration as the actions of a fringe group with limited influence.

“This is a small group of individuals who only managed to seize the television station. The regular army is steadily regaining control. Both the city and the entire country remain completely secure,” the statement said.

The clarification follows an earlier broadcast by soldiers identifying themselves as the “Military Committee for Refoundation,” who declared that Talon had been removed from office.

The government has since described the broadcast as an isolated disruption, assuring citizens that the situation is under control.

Benin govt provides fresh update on coup, says plotters on run, some arrested

Published

on

A new update shared by Nigeria’s Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga says authorities in Benin Republic have confirmed that the leader of the group behind Sunday’s attempted mutiny, Colonel Pascal Tigri, is now on the run.

According to him, “The latest report from the Benin Republic said Colonel Pascal Tigri, the leader of the mutineers who seized the country’s National TV on Sunday, is on the run.”

He added that some members of the group have already been arrested after security forces stopped the attempted takeover.

Benin’s Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou, appeared on national television to announce that the situation had been brought under control.

He explained what happened on Sunday morning.

He said, “Early on Sunday morning, 7 December 2025, a small group of soldiers launched a mutiny aimed at destabilising the state and its institutions.

“Faced with this situation, the Beninese armed forces and their leadership, true to their oath, remained committed to the republic. Their response allowed them to retain control of the situation and foil the attempt.

“The government therefore urges the population to go about their activities as normal.”
