UNILAG lecturer raped me in his office, survivor tells court

A 20-year-old student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Wednesday narrated to a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja how a 53-year-old lecturer of the school, Samuel Obinna Ojogbo, allegedly assaulted her in his office.

The student gave the account before Justice Oyindamola Ogala while testifying as the first prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of Ojogbo.

The Lagos State Government is prosecuting Ojogbo on a two-count charge of rape and sexual assault.

Led in evidence-in-chief by the prosecution counsel, A.O. Azeez, the witness said the incident occurred on August 22, 2025, at about 1200hours, at the university’s Akoka campus.

When the victim entered the witness box, she began by introducing herself: “I am a student of the University of Lagos.”

She recalled that a day before the incident, while writing an examination, the defendant approached her.

The victim stated, “Prior to the 22nd of August, 2025, on the 21st of August, I was writing an exam not related to banking.

“I was seated in the first row, the first seat. The defendant came inside at the first row while I was writing my exam and asked, ‘Hope it is what I read that came out?’ I said yes, that I knew a particular section more than the other section.”

“He then told me not to worry and that I should come and see him in his office after my exam,” she said.

The witness told the court that she attempted to meet him twice after the exam but did not find him in his office.

According to her, “The second time I went with my friend, he wasn’t around either, so I left.

“The second day, being 22nd August, I had another exam slated from 9:00am to 12:00pm, but the defendant was the one taking us.

However, on August 22, after completing another examination, she said she encountered the lecturer near her faculty.

“I was going to my hostel when I saw him. He signalled to me to wait. He signalled to me that I should wait, and I waited because he was talking to somebody.

“We then went to his office together,” she said.

Describing the office, she told the court, “His office is underground. There is no window and no secretary.”

She said that while they were talking, two female students briefly entered the office to meet him about the tests they missed, but were sent away by the defendant.

“He told them to leave, that they were disturbing him,” she said.

According to her, the incident occurred shortly after.

“On their way out, they didn’t close the door well. He told me to close the door. As I went to close it, he stood behind me and pushed me to the couch beside the door,” she said.

The prosecution witness narrated amidst tears that “he started caressing me, touched my breasts, and then forced himself on me. He raped me.”

She further told the court that after the incident, the defendant allegedly made promises regarding her academic progress.

“He said he would make sure he supervises my project in Year Four. He collected my exam docket, made a copy, gave me one, and collected my phone number,” she said.

The witness said she left the office in tears and immediately reported the incident.

“I went to my friend crying, and we agreed to report,” she said.

She told the court that she first reported to a lecturer in her department, who contacted her uncle, also a lecturer, before they approached the head of the department.

“We then went to a lecturer in my department, Dr Abu; he called my uncle, who is also a lecturer in the department. Then we went to the HOD office. When we got to the HOD office, he asked if what I was saying was true; he said, ‘Where is the evidence, and why don’t I record with my phone?’

“Then he called the defendant to his office. When the defendant came, he said nothing of such a thing having happened and that I was just lying against him.

“The HOD said that my uncle and I should just let it go, and said next time I should be more careful with lecturers alone. Then we left his office.

“My uncle said we can’t just let it go like that. We went to Servicom at school. When I got to Servicom, a woman and I went to the medical centre for tests. Then, after that, they prescribed drugs.

She further testified that she reported the case to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, after which she was referred to the police.

“I was referred to Bariga Police Station and later to WARIF for another test,” she said.

She added that the case was subsequently transferred to the Gender Unit of the police command for investigation.

The witness also told the court that following the report, there were attempts at settlement.

“After all these, the defendant’s family and friends started calling for a meeting,” she said.

Justice Ogala adjourned the matter till April 27, 2026, for cross-examination of the witness.

Members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards have arrested a commercial driver conveying 98 explosive devices, N13 million and three motorcycles allegedly en route to a bandits’ camp in Bindin village, Maru Local Government Area of the state.

Other items recovered from the suspect included cartons of cigarettes, suspected Indian hemp and crates of apple fruits.

Addressing journalists in Gusau on Wednesday, the Commandant of the outfit, Mohammed Shehu Dalijan, said the suspect, identified as Abubakar Abdullahi, was intercepted along the Gusau–Dansadau road while heading to Bindin village, an area he said is largely occupied by bandits.

According to him, the driver was travelling in a Golf vehicle when operatives stopped and searched him.

“After thorough investigation, 98 explosive devices, N13 million cash, three brand new motorcycles packaged in their boxes and some weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were discovered in his vehicle,” he said.

Shehu added that the suspect confessed he was delivering the items to illegal miners in the area.

“The driver confessed that he was going to Bindin village to deliver the said items to the illegal miners, which everybody knows that most of them are either bandits or their accomplices,” he said.

“The explosive devices are the ones the bandits use to attack security agents on the road, as it has been happening in the state on several occasions.”

The Commandant said the suspect would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action, noting that eight other persons had been arrested for questioning in connection with the case.

Two suspects arrested for s3xually assaulting 16-year-old girl in Edo

Published

on

Two suspects, Izuchukwu Nnamdi and David Nwokocha, have been arrested for s3xually assaulting a 16-year-old girl, Mercy Udeogba, in Edo State.

The victim revealed that she fled her aunt’s residence after allegedly taking five thousand Naira from her.

Seeking shelter, she approached Izuchukwu Nnamdi, who then took her to the one-room apartment of his colleague, 32-year-old David Nwokocha.

She disclosed that both men s3xually assaulted her repeatedly throughout the night.

According to her, the following morning, after leaving Nwokocha’s apartment, she went to stay with Lucky Tony, a 24-year-old man at Ogiso Quarters in Benin City, where she was s3xually abused for three nights.

The Commander of the Task Force to the Government House, Edo State, ASP Ibharagbotua Odigie Smart, who confirmed the incident, said the suspects were arrested following a distress call from a Vigilante Security Guard about the assault.

He narrated how he immediately mobilized his operatives, which resulted in the arrest of two suspects, with one still at large.

He assured that the remaining suspect would be apprehended and that justice will be served, reiterating the Sen. Monday Okpebholo’s administration’s firm stance against s3xual offenses in the State.

Reacting to the incident on Tuesday, April 15, 2026, the Coordinator Office of the First Lady Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, condemned the s3xual assault, describing it as a grave violation of human dignity with no place in society.

Expressing deep sympathy for the victim, the Coordinator pledged that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure swift and transparent justice.

She reaffirmed her Office’s commitment to strengthening protective systems for vulnerable individuals and supporting law enforcement agencies in the diligent prosecution of offenders.

She urged communities leaders, religious institutions, and civil society groups to stand in solidarity with survivors by creating safe spaces for them to speak out and actively support their journey toward healing and justice.

Miss Udeogba is currently receiving care at the Vivian S3xual Assault Referral Centre, undergoing a forensic medical examination as directed by the Coordinator.

Ogun brick moulder killed over N200 dispute

Published

on

An Ogun-based brick moulder, Isreal Ayomide, has been stabbed to death by a suspected hoodlum, popularly known as Aboy, following a heated dispute over N200 at a block industry in the Ota area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Wednesday that the incident occurred in the early hours of April 1 at Ori-Ade Block, along Alaka Road, under the power line in the Rosiji area of the Ewupe community.

Community sources who spoke to PUNCH Metro in separate interviews on Monday said the suspect immediately fled the scene after the attack.

One of the sources, who identified himself as Moyo, said the altercation lasted only a few minutes before it turned fatal.

“The altercation lasted just a few minutes before Aboy pinned Ayomide down and stabbed him. He died before members of the community could rush him to the hospital,” Moyo said.

Another resident, Daniel, accused the Onipanu Police Division of detaining community members who reported the incident instead of pursuing the suspect.

“He (the suspect) is known for attacking people with bottles, especially during disputes. I think he acts that way because his mother was once a police officer.

“The police at Onipanu even detained people who went to report the incident. Instead of launching a manhunt to apprehend the suspect before he fled the community, they focused on the community leaders who reported the case. They were only granted bail the next day,” Daniel alleged.

In a separate interview, the deceased’s father, Mr Israel, narrated the circumstances that led to his son’s death, revealing that he had planned to ban the suspect from his block industry a day before the incident.

“The incident happened at Obasanjo Farm, inside my block industry. My son, Ayomide, was stabbed by a boy popularly known as Aboy.

“On that day, Aboy arrived at the workplace before Ayomide, around 8am. When my son got there, he met him on the ground and began removing block pallets from previously made blocks before going to get food.

At that point, Aboy demanded N200 from Ayomide, but Ayomide refused to give it to him. When Ayomide refused to give him the money, they began arguing.

“During the argument, my son reminded him that I intended to send him away that day, and that was how the fight started.

“In the course of the fight, Ayomide fell, giving Aboy the opportunity to grab a bottle and stab him. Before anyone could intervene, he had fled. My son was rushed to a nearby health centre, but he was confirmed dead.”

Explaining why the suspect frequented the area, the bereaved father said, “There is a football field nearby, and beside my shop, Ayomide operates a car wash with a snooker board and table tennis, which attracts young boys to the area.

“On the day of the incident, the police came to see the landlord and detained about six shop owners nearby, claiming they were key witnesses.

“On April 4, members of their community came to plead with us to bury the deceased while they continued efforts to find Aboy.

“When we asked them to confirm if it was truly their son who stabbed my child, they admitted he was responsible. Since then, they have been holding meetings in the area.

“Ayomide would have turned 23 this year; he was born in 2003. He assisted me in delivering blocks with a truck.

“The police did not take action until I went to the Area Command in Sango. People in the community have said this is not the first time the suspect has committed such an act; he has reportedly stabbed about four people in the past. It was even alleged that he killed his stepfather.

“Since the incident, the police have not provided any meaningful update, despite arresting six people, including the person who reported the case and the chairman. Some of my neighbours, who witnessed the incident, were detained and intimidated, making them afraid to speak.”

A senior police officer in the area confirmed the incident to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday but dismissed claims that the police were shielding the suspect because of his mother’s background.

The officer said, “It is true that the suspect’s mother was a police officer, but she has since retired. She was a junior officer while in service.

“The suspect is a 23-year-old man. When officers from Onipanu met his mother for a statement, she said he should be arrested wherever he is found.

“We explained to the deceased’s father that we cannot arrest the mother because the suspect is an adult and solely responsible for his actions. We have been searching for him since the incident.

“Tracking his phone has also been difficult because he left it at home on the day of the incident. His mother herself has expressed support for his arrest.”

Confirming the incident during a telephone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the state police command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command was working to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

He said, “The investigation is still ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect. The claim linking a retired police officer to the probe is unfounded. We cannot divulge details of our investigation until it is concluded.

“We are doing all we can to ensure the suspect is arrested. Investigations sometimes take time, but in the end, justice will be served.”
