2027 Election: Goodluck Jonathan Visits Ibrahim Babangida

Published

on

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday held a closed-door meeting with former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (Rtd), popularly called IBB

It was understands that the meeting was held at IBB’s Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.

It was gathered that former President Jonathan arrived at Babangida’s Minna home at about 4.15 pm and left at 5.07 pm on Sunday.

According to Leadership, the former president went by road and consulted with his predecessor for over 45 minutes behind closed doors.

Although the agenda was public, inside sources said the meeting “was political, focusing on events ahead of the 2027 general election.”

However, phone calls made to Jonathan’s media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, on the purpose of the meeting were not replied to. A text message sent to him late last night was not replied to as of press time.

Recall that political stakeholders, especially from the North, have been appealing to Jonathan to contest the 2027 election.

Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, had hinted on the pressure on Jonathan to contest ahead of 2027, when he stated that he (Bala) would step down his presidential ambition if Jonathan bowed to pressure to take a fresh shot at the presidency.

The governor said, “About your call for me to present myself, I am still contemplating my chances as the opposition leader. I know there are good leaders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), especially my boss, Goodluck Jonathan.

“I have always said that as long as Jonathan is around, I will not present myself for the leadership of this country, unless he decides not to run.”

However, recall that in May, former first lady Patience Jonathan had ruled out the possibility of her husband contesting against President Bola Tinubu in 2027, saying her family would rather campaign for Tinubu’s re-election.

2027: No National Consensus To Unseat Tinubu — Lagos APC Tackles Tambuwal

Published

on

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rubbished claims by Aminu Tambuwal that there is a “national consensus” to stop President Bola Tinubu from returning to power in 2027.

Tambuwal, a former Sokoto State governor and lawmaker representing Sokoto South, had on a television programme last Friday described the push against Tinubu’s re-election as a collective national agenda rather than a northern conspiracy.

Reacting in a statement on Sunday, the Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said what exists is rather a consensus to support good governance, stressing that Nigerians will not hesitate to reaffirm their trust in Tinubu at the polls.

He said, “What is emerging is a national consensus to support good governance, and when the time comes in 2027, Nigerians will not hesitate to reaffirm their trust in a leader who delivers.”

Oladejo described Tambuwal’s statement as “another failed attempt to rewrite the obvious truth,” insisting that Nigerians overwhelmingly rejected the opposition in 2023 and continue to support Tinubu’s administration.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not imposed, he was elected by Nigerians from every region, faith, and background. And unlike the noise-makers in the opposition, he has hit the ground running,” Oladejo said.

The APC spokesman further advised Tambuwal to focus on clearing his name before anti-graft agencies, noting that “recent revelations have not painted him in a flattering light.”

According to him, opposition talks about consensus ahead of 2027 amount to a “laughable” alliance driven by greed and desperation.

“We watch with close interest as they struggle to build what will be, no doubt, an elusive alliance, sabotaged by their own greed, inflated egos, unbridled desperation for power, and self-righteousness. Nigerians are watching too, popcorn in hand,” he mocked.

Oladejo maintained that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is already producing results in stabilising the economy, tackling infrastructure deficits, and creating jobs.

“While the opposition plays musical chairs and media politics, we are building roads, creating jobs, fixing power, reforming the economy, and laying the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria,” he added.

Rhodes-Vivour Dumps Labour Party, Joins ADC

Published

on

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking shortly after his defection ceremony held in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos, Rhodes-Vivour stated that the ADC represents a strong coalition to rescue Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said: “We are not holding a political rally but a political meeting, which we have constitutional rights to do. However, we will meet with the Commissioner of Police to know why his men are here and whether they are carrying out their duty of providing us protection or otherwise.”

While stating that his defection to ADC was rooted in the need to unite the opposition, the former guber candidate said: “This coalition is meant to rescue Nigeria. Since the 2023 elections, I have said we cannot afford to divide the opposition ahead of 2027. We must come together through a robust, strong coalition that can deliver Nigeria from those who hold power through thuggery, violence, and intimidation.”

“I am happy to become part of this family. My prayer is that God will grant our leaders the wisdom to come together and define a new path for Nigeria,” he added.

Speaking earlier, the ADC Chairman in Lagos, George Ashiru, described the defection as a significant step in building a broad-based coalition, adding that Rhodes-Vivour is the leader of a movement that shook Lagos in 2023.

“We are not affirming one man; we are affirming a movement. What Rhodes-Vivour represents is the leadership of a movement that shook Lagos in the last election. The coalition did not start three months ago—it began two years ago, and today we are celebrating it,” Ashiru said.

He added that ADC’s vision is for “a global Lagos – Lagos for everybody, where citizens and their children have opportunities for the future.”

Tinubu, APC Will Win Massively In Southwest – Lawmaker

Published

on

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Aderemi Oseni, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure overwhelming support in the South-West during the 2027 presidential election.

It was reports that Oseni, who represents Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency of Oyo State, told journalists in Lagos on Sunday that stakeholders in the zone had already begun mobilising support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“The people of the South-West will vote massively for the President to ensure his re-election,” Oseni said.

He added that political leaders across the region were united in working towards what he described as a “landslide victory” for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general elections.

Oseni praised Tinubu’s reforms and infrastructural initiatives, noting that they had begun to yield tangible results.

“President Tinubu has exceeded expectations in the delivery of legacy projects. We have been to nearly all states of the federation where the federal government is either rehabilitating or reconstructing federal roads or constructing new ones,” he said.

He maintained that the administration’s pace of project delivery showed that Nigeria was “in transition from an era of deplorable road infrastructure to one of strategic transport development.”

Oseni explained that, as part of its oversight duties, his committee had inspected federal road projects across the country.

“Our findings clearly show that Nigeria is moving from the period of neglect to one where our economy is being linked to the development of strategic transport infrastructure projects,” he said.

Among the projects he highlighted were the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, and the planned reconstruction of the Ibadan–Ilesa–Akure–Benin highways.

The lawmaker faulted critics of the administration, accusing them of focusing only on the country’s challenges while overlooking achievements.

“It is unfortunate that the opposition only talks about the challenges in the country, ignoring the great development strides this government has recorded,” he said.

According to him, President Tinubu is laying “the foundation of a new Nigeria, a truly recalibrated federation founded on a competitive economy, efficient governance structure, and functional infrastructure.”
