Police probe teenager’s death in NDLEA, Edo community clash

Published

on

The Edo State Police Command on Thursday said it had opened a probe into the death of 16-year-old Emmanuel George as a joint team of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the army personnel clashed in Okpuje in Uzeba Community in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Edo State Police Command Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, on Thursday.

Two others, Godspower Omage (20 years) and Ajayi Irobia (54 years), were said to have been hospitalised.

PUNCH Metro reported that a joint team of the NDLEA officers and soldiers was attacked by drug barons in the agrarian community, notable for cannabis cultivation.

In a statement after the attack by the Edo State commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, it was stated that one of its officers sustained an injury after being struck on the hand with a sharp object.

Ofoyeju told our correspondent on Thursday that the team to Okpuje had come under heavy attack when it went to the community to check the activities of the drug barons.

He said the operation took place at about 2 am on Monday, and the team had to fight back and retreat when they came under fire to ensure no one was injured. He said it was not possible to know that someone was killed as members of the team fought to leave the place alive.

He said, “I am hearing that someone was killed during the operation. What happened was that the NDLEA team was attacked as soon as they got into the town. They had to fight back and retreat, but at that time, one of our officers was hit by a sharp object.

“I wonder why people will attack those who came to do their legitimate jobs with arms. The officials were not there to fight anyone but to do their jobs as stipulated by the Constitution.”

However, the state Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has visited the community to condole with the bereaved family and ascertain the true situation.

The statement by Ikoedem read,”In a swift and compassionate move, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, on October 28, 2025, visited Uzeba community in the company of the Deputy Commissioner in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Isah Lawal, to assess the situation firsthand.

“During the visit, the CP paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family, particularly the parents of the deceased boy, Mr. and Mrs. Monday George, and offered words of comfort on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Command.

“The CP also held a peace engagement with community leaders and youths, urging them to remain calm and not to take the law into their own hands. He emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and order, assuring them that the police had taken over the case and were conducting a thorough and impartial investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. He reiterated that justice would be served and that the long arm of the law would catch up with anyone found culpable.

“Furthermore, the CP visited Godswill Memorial Nursing Centre, Uzeba, where he met Godspower Omage and Ajayi Irobia, who were receiving medical attention. He assured them of justice and police support.”

It was stated that the CP also visited the mortuary where the remains of the deceased boy were deposited, and he arranged for an autopsy to determine the cause of death and ensure proper documentation for the ongoing investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be thoroughly investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department, Benin City. The command assures the general public that updates on the investigation will be communicated as soon as credible findings emerge. The Edo State Police Command remains committed to upholding justice, maintaining peace, and ensuring the protection of lives and property across the state”, the statement noted.

The NDLEA in recent months has also raided spots known for illicit drug sales in the state to arrest dealers. Some of the spots visited include Ihama in the GRA, Abuaja Quarters in Ugbor, Upper Sakponba, and Wire Road.

Also, some of the interesting cases include the interception of a truck along Wareke-Auchi Road, conveying 82 bags of cannabis concealed in bags of charcoal with a total weight of 1,025 kg.

It has also got barons and dealers convicted while seizing drugs and held sensitisation programmes to address the ills of drug abuse in the state.

In August, one conviction was secured in drug-related cases, while four additional cases have been charged, and 118 cases are ongoing at the Federal High Court in Benin City.

EFCC, NFIU launch crackdown on alleged coup funders

Published

on

Military investigators probing the alleged attempted coup are working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit to unravel the financial flows linked to individuals accused of bankrolling the plot.

This was as indications emerge that the bank accounts of some of the suspects might have been frozen by the authorities, as part of the probe procedures.

The PUNCH could not immediately confirm the development, as no one was willing to comment on it. But a security official described this as standard procedure in such cases.

However, multiple security sources familiar with the probe confirmed that the EFCC and NFIU are carrying out a forensic investigation on the bank accounts of the soldiers and the civilians involved in the plot to overthrow the Federal Government.

The forensic investigation will cover transaction analysis, including reviewing deposits, withdrawals, and transfers to identify suspicious patterns; tracking of account activity over time; identifying the origin of funds and determining the true owners of the accounts under probe.

The investigation is also said to have been widened to cover the associates and business partners of the key suspects.

The development is coming on the heels of the discovery of the alleged transfer of N45 billion from the Niger Delta Development Commission to those involved in the plot.

Sahara Reporters had reported that 16 Nigerian Army officers were arrested for allegedly planning a coup to overthrow President Bola Tinubu. The online platform linked the purported plot to the Federal Government’s cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration.

The Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, denied that the detention of the officers was tied to a coup attempt.

Nevertheless, security operatives raided the Abuja home of former Bayelsa State governor Timipre Sylva, taking away his younger brother, Paga and driver, as the investigation gained momentum.

The former minister and All Progressives Congress chieftain was reportedly outside the country at the time.

On Wednesday, Sylva’s spokesman, Chief Julius Bokoru, confirmed that his principal’s residence was raided, adding that the ex-minister and his wife were out of the country at the time.

He denied the former governor’s involvement in the rumoured coup plot, accusing his political adversaries of trying to frame him.

Providing an update on Thursday, military insiders explained that the investigators are relying on the EFCC and NFIU to uncover the money trail and flow of funds deployed for the execution of the alleged coup.

Sources in the anti-graft agencies confirmed their involvement in the probe.

“This is discreet intelligence work. Until the entire exercise is concluded, we cannot provide a list of all those involved, how much was deployed for the plot or the amount recovered. The investigators are relying on the EFCC and NFIU for this,” a security source who is privy to the investigation disclosed.

The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, could not be reached for comment on Thursday. His NFIU counterpart, Aishatu Bantam, did not respond to phone calls.

Meanwhile, the names of the 16 alleged coup plotters have surfaced.

The army officers include a brigadier general, a colonel, four lieutenant colonels, five majors, two captains, and a lieutenant.

The remaining two are a lieutenant commander from the Navy, the naval equivalent of a major, and a squadron leader from the Air Force, which holds the exact rank equivalence.

Premium Times reported that 12 of the 14 army officers belonged to the Infantry Corps, the army’s frontline combat unit whose troops primarily engage in ground battles.

One officer is reportedly from the Signals Corps, which manages military communications, while another serves in the Ordnance Corps, responsible for procuring, storing, and maintaining weapons, ammunition, vehicles, and other essential hardware.

They were reportedly led by Brig. Gen  Musa Abubakar Sadiq. Others include Col M.A.  Ma’aji, Lt. Colonel S. Bappah, Lt Col A.A. Hayatu,  P. Dangnap, Lt. Col M. Almakura, Major A. J Ibrahim, Major M.M. Jiddah, Major M.A. Usman, Major D. Yusuf, Major I. Dauda, Capt Ibrahim Bello, Capt A.A Yusuf, Lt S.S Felix, Lt . Commander D. B. Abdullahi and Squandron Leader S. B Adamu.

Meanwhile, The Cable reported that an air force officer recently posted to the Office of the National Security Adviser was detailed to kill the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Accoring to The Cable, Squadron Leader SB Adamu (Service No. NAF/3481) from Jigawa State was posted to the National Counter Terrorism Centre — an agency under ONSA — about four weeks before the coup attempt was uncovered.

Contrary to claims that several suspects worked directly with ONSA, investigators said Adamu was the only one connected to the office through the NCTC.

Military insiders said when  the National Coordinator of NCTC,  Maj-Gen. Adamu Laka, requested the posting of a specific officer to the centre in August 2025, the request was surprisingly turned down. Instead, Adamu was deployed — a move now fuelling suspicions that the alleged coup plotters may have penetrated the military hierarchy.

Adamu is a member of the Nigerian Defence Academy’s Regular Course 59.

GRAPHIC PHOTOS: Taraba Mosque dispute between Darika, Izala sects kills two, injures several

Published

on

A violent clash over control of the Donga Central Mosque in Taraba State has left two people dead and several others injured, following renewed hostilities between the Darika and Izala Muslim sects on Wednesday.

Source told our correspondent that the bloody confrontation erupted after months of simmering tension between the two Islamic groups over who should lead prayers and manage the newly renovated central mosque in Donga town.

According to community source, Yamujeh Usman Baaga, the conflict traced back several months when the Darika sect, which had been worshipping at the central mosque, pulled out to establish a new place of worship near the riverbank in Donga after disagreements with the Izala group.

Trouble reportedly reignited when Hon. Mohammadu Usman Fanya, a local political figure, sponsored the renovation of the Donga Central Mosque. After the renovation, it was agreed that the mosque would serve as the main worship centre for all Muslim faithful in the town. However, disagreement soon followed as both sects claimed leadership of the mosque — each insisting on the right to lead the Friday congregational prayers.

What started as a heated argument on Wednesday morning degenerated into a violent clash, with both sides allegedly wielding dangerous weapons. Two people were confirmed dead, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The violence prompted security operatives who swiftly moved in to restore order, as the Taraba State Government imposed a 24-hour curfew on Donga town to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of residents.

As of press time, the police spokesperson of the Taraba State Police Command could not be reached for comment, as calls to his line went unanswered. However, security sources confirmed that additional police reinforcements had been deployed to the area.

Residents, who spoke under anonymity, called on religious leaders and traditional authorities to urgently intervene to restore peace, warning that the incident could inflame further sectarian divisions if left unchecked.

PHOTOS: Two Nigerian drug dealers arrested in Thailand after one tried to swallow cocaine to destroy evidence

Published

on

Chonburi Immigration, in a joint operation with Pattaya City Police, raided and arrested two Nigerian men who they say are associated with a larger Nigerian drug trafficking network in Bangkok, Thailand.

The suspects, identified as Amarachi and Ikenna, were arrested after a sting purchase of crystal meth (ice) in the Jomtien area on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

Authorities seized 33 grams of ice and 9 grams of cocaine hidden in cigarette packs and toothpaste boxes.

During the arrest, one suspect attempted to swallow small pellets of cocaine to eliminate evidence. Officers pried his mouth open and retrieved the drugs just in time.

Pattaya police say a further Investigation links the pair to a network of foreign nationals, mostly Nigerians, in Bangkok around Nana Plaza using the mouth-concealment method to evade detection.

Both suspects had entered Thailand on tourist visas but overstayed.

In an undercover operation on October 26th, 2025, Bangkok Metropolitan Police and narcotics suppression units, disguised as construction workers, stormed the bustling Sukhumvit 11 area in the notorious Nana district, dismantling a key cell of what they call the same Nigerian-led transnational drug network linked to the recent Chonburi busts of suspects Amarachi and Ikenna.

The pre-dawn raid netted eight Nigerian nationals and one Thai accomplice, who were allegedly using the “mouth-concealment method” to peddle cocaine and crystal meth to tourists, mirroring the evasion tactics uncovered in Pattaya.

Officers seized several grams of cocaine, mobile phones used for transactions, and cash proceeds, while the arrests exposed deeper ties to other Nigerian nationals in Bangkok, where overstay visa holders had evaded detection for months.

Authorities hailed the coordinated strike as a major blow to cross-border syndicates, vowing continued vigilance to safeguard the city’s nightlife and global visitors from such predatory operations.

Information from the Bangkok raid led officers to the Pattaya suspects.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Songprod Sirisukha, Commander of Immigration Division 3, declared: “We will relentlessly crack down on all forms of transnational crime — restoring safety to Pattaya and tourists worldwide.”
