Kidnapping now major source of financing for terrorists – FG

Published

on

The Federal Government has disclosed that kidnapping, which was once considered an opportunistic crime, has become a significant source of funding for criminal and terrorist networks in Nigeria.

Speaking on Wednesday at a Stakeholders Workshop of the Multi-Agency Kidnap Fusion Cell in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Maj. Gen. Adamu Laka, said the proceeds from kidnapping had allowed criminals to acquire weapons, sustain acts of terror, and, in some instances, assert territorial control.

He said the initiative is part of deliberate efforts to strengthen coordination, intelligence sharing, and operational synergy in curtailing the menace of kidnapping in the country.

Laka said, “As we are all aware, Nigeria continues to grapple with a broad spectrum of security challenges driven by terrorism, banditry, separatist violence, and farmer-herder clashes. A common trend across these threats is the pervasive use of kidnapping.

“What was once an opportunistic crime has become a persistent and destabilising enterprise, enabling these groups to procure logistics, perpetuate terror, and, in some cases, exert territorial control.”

He noted that the growing national and international concern over rising kidnapping incidents led to strategic collaboration between the governments of the United Kingdom and Nigeria, culminating in the establishment of the Multi-Agency Kidnap Fusion Cell at the NCTC.

“The cell, officially inaugurated by the National Security Adviser on 19 December 2024, coordinates counter-terrorism and anti-kidnap operations nationwide while supporting Nigeria’s ambition to become a regional centre of excellence in counter-terrorism in West Africa and the Sahel.

“Since its operationalisation, the cell has coordinated the efforts of the Armed Forces, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies to prevent, disrupt, and respond to kidnapping, with notable success. Analysts within the cell have generated actionable intelligence leading to the rescue of hostages and the disruption of kidnapping syndicates across the country,” Laka added.

To strengthen linkages between national coordination and state-level response, Laka said the NCTC conducted a state expansion programme in July 2025 for Anti-Kidnap Commanders of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Despite these successes,  Laka acknowledged the need to integrate additional stakeholders such as media organisations, telecommunications operators, and social media platforms into the anti-kidnap response framework.

He urged participants to propose practical solutions to support national efforts in rescuing victims, dismantling kidnapping networks, and safeguarding communities, while maintaining close liaison with the Multi-Agency Kidnap Fusion Cell to support ongoing rescue operations.

The acting High Commisoner, British High Commission, Gill Lever, said the UK government was highly impressed by the activities of the cntres since its establishment, assuring that the UK government would continue to support Nigeria’s counter-terrorism and anti-kidnapooing efforts.

Head of UK’s National Crime Agency, Chris Gibson, said effective collaboration and communication among various critical stakeholders is key to continue success of the cell.

He urged Nigerians to continue to support the government’s efforts, stressing that “anti-kidnapping is a responsibility of every citizen.”

Kidnapping has emerged as one of the most pervasive security threats in Nigeria.

In response, the Nigerian government has intensified efforts to tackle kidnapping through coordinated, multi-agency approaches.

One notable initiative is the establishment of the Multi-Agency Kidnap Fusion Cell at the NCTC, developed in collaboration with the United Kingdom.

Published

An Enugu State Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of 51-year-old Emeka Emmanuel Nwangwu, a member of a neighbourhood security watch group, who was arraigned for the alleged murder of his 19-year-old cousin, Loveth Uloma Nwangwu, in the Nsukka Local Government Area.

The suspect was arraigned on Wednesday after detectives of the State Criminal Investigation Department concluded investigations mandated by the Commissioner of Police.

Confirming the development in a statement, the spokesperson for the state police command, Daniel Ndukwe, said the arraignment followed the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, who insisted on a swift and thorough investigation.

“Detectives have arraigned and secured the remand of 51-year-old Emeka Emmanuel Nwangwu after the conclusion of investigations by the State CID,” Ndukwe stated.

He recalled that the suspect was arrested on December 1, 2025, for allegedly assaulting the deceased in an incident that later proved fatal.

“The suspect was arrested following an incident in which he violently assaulted the deceased, resulting in injuries that tragically led to her death,” Ndukwe explained.

He said the Commissioner of Police immediately ordered a meticulous investigation.

“Upon his arrest, the Commissioner of Police directed the State CID to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the case was promptly charged to court,” he added.

Following the police probe, the suspect was arraigned on a one-count charge of murder.

The court subsequently ordered his remand at the Enugu Correctional Centre and directed that the case file be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice for further action.

“The Court ordered his remand and directed that the case file be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice, through the Directorate of Public Prosecution, for review and legal advice,” Ndukwe said.

Meanwhile, Giwa expressed sympathy to the bereaved family, assuring them that the justice process was progressing.

“We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” he said, urging them to take solace in the police’s swift action.

“Justice is already in motion, as the investigation has been concluded and the suspect has been arraigned and remanded accordingly,” the state police boss added.

The tragic incident has sparked renewed calls for accountability among local security outfits and improved responsiveness to threats within communities.

Suspect revealed why he killed sister’s baby in Edo – See why

Published

on

A man identified simply as Osemudiamen has confessed to killing his sister’s baby in Edo State while under the influence of alcohol and a hard substance.

The suspect confessed in a video seen by PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, during which he was being interrogated by security operatives.

In the video, posted on X by the anti-cultism advocacy platform Naija Confra, Osemudiamen admitted that he was intoxicated at the time of the attack.

He said, “I am here because I killed my sister’s baby. I got high with drinks and colos. It was Fredrick who gave me the colos. I met him on the way and saw him smoking.”

The suspect further disclosed that he is a member of the Aye confraternity and had been planning to renounce his membership before the incident.

He added that although he had contacted a lawyer for assistance, he could not afford the legal fees.

“I am a member of the Aiye confraternity, and I was going to deaxe myself. I even have a lawyer who wants to help me, but I did not have the money,” he said.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the command, Eno Ikoede, were unsuccessful, as calls to her phone went unanswered and a text message sent to her had yet to receive a response as of the time this report was filed.

The development comes amid rising incidents of crimes fuelled by hard drug use among young people.

In 2022, The Nigerian Lawyer reported that a 21-year-old man, Michael Arigbabuwo, died during a birthday party after allegedly mixing two hard drugs for maximum effect.

NDLEA arrests two suspected traffickers, seizes 763kg of skunk in Edo

Published

on

The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said on Wednesday that it arrested two suspected traffickers and seized 763kg of skunk cannabis in the state.

The state commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the arrests and seizures were part of the agency’s pre-Yuletide drug control strategies.

He added that two vehicles were impounded during the operation, describing the seizures as significant efforts toward ridding the state of illicit drugs during the festive season.

He stated, “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Edo State Command, has successfully intercepted large consignments of skunk cannabis in two separate operations, resulting in the seizure of over 763 kilogrammes of the illicit substance and the arrest of two suspected traffickers.

“Both seizures are impressive efforts toward ridding the state of illicit drugs during the end-of-year festive season.

“The agency remains resolute in its commitment to curbing the production, trafficking, and distribution of illicit drugs in the state.

“These arrests and seizures demonstrate our unwavering dedication to eradicating drug-related crimes that threaten the safety and well-being of our communities, especially as we approach the festive period,” he said.

According to Ofoyeju, the first operation was carried out on December 2, 2025, when officers intercepted two Honda Accord vehicles at Agho Forest in the Akoko Edo Local Government Area.

He said the vehicles were found transporting compressed dried weeds suspected to be skunk cannabis, with the first vehicle (registration number ABC-678KK) containing 341 compressed packages weighing 217.5 kilogrammes, and its 56-year-old driver, Dada Babawibi, arrested at the scene.

Ofoyeju added that the second vehicle, with registration number GGE-772FB, was loaded with 361 compressed packages weighing 230 kilogrammes.

He noted that the driver fled and is currently being tracked by the agency, adding that the total weight of cannabis seized from both vehicles amounted to 447.5 kilogrammes.

He continued, “In another raid on December 4, 2025, NDLEA operatives, acting on intelligence, arrested Stanley Obasuwa, aged 36, at a warehouse in the Isiefve community, Uhunwonde LGA, Edo State.

“The raid led to the seizure of eight bags of cannabis sativa seeds weighing a total of 315.8 kilogrammes, stored in a makeshift structure on the outskirts of the community.

“Investigations are ongoing as operatives continue to track other suspects and dismantle drug networks operating within Edo State.

“Members of the public are urged to support the NDLEA by providing credible information that can aid the fight against drug trafficking.”

PUNCH had reported that the command recently arrested two people transporting cannabis along the Benin–Akure Road.

The arrests were made on November 13 during a patrol by operatives of the command.
