Tegbe denies promising to fix power grid in three months

Published

on

The Minister-designate for Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has denied reports claiming he promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months.

Tegbe, through his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, described the reports as a misrepresentation of remarks he made during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026.

In a statement posted on X on Thursday, Adelabu said the minister-designate only stated that timelines for reforms in the power sector were still being worked out and remained subject to diagnostics and consultations with stakeholders.

“Our attention has been drawn to inaccurate media reports alleging that the Honourable Minister-designate, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months.

“This claim is a clear misrepresentation of his remarks. At his Senate screening on May 6, 2026, Mr Tegbe made no such commitment,” the statement read.

According to the statement, Tegbe assured senators that initial efforts aimed at stabilising the national grid would commence within his first 100 days in office, while broader structural reforms could take about one year.

The aide explained that the proposed reforms would focus on improving sector credibility, addressing gas supply challenges and expanding electricity metering across the country.

“My promise to this chamber is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” Tegbe was quoted as saying during the screening.

He also pledged to stabilise the national grid, modernise electricity infrastructure, improve commercial frameworks and enforce accountability across the power value chain.

On electricity tariffs, the minister-designate reportedly assured lawmakers that reforms would protect vulnerable consumers while ensuring sustainability and investor confidence in the sector.

The statement added that Tegbe remained open to constructive engagement with the media and was committed to transparency and measurable progress in addressing the country’s power challenges.

Tinubu had recently nominated Tegbe as Minister of Power following the exit of Adebayo Adelabu from the ministry during the cabinet reshuffle announced by the Presidency.

Tegbe, an engineer and public policy expert, appeared before the Senate for screening, where he outlined plans to tackle challenges in the electricity sector, including grid instability, metering gaps and power infrastructure deficits.

Middle Belt stakeholders demand end to killings

Published

on

Stakeholders and victims of terror attacks from the Middle Belt have called for urgent and coordinated action to end the cycle of killings in the region.

They made the call during a town hall meeting convened by News Central TV in Jos on Thursday

The event, held in the Plateau State capital and themed “The Middle Belt Question: Why Does the Violence Persist”, brought together community leaders, victims of conflict, security agencies, and representatives of civil society organisations.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, said the state government remained committed to addressing the root causes of the violence. “

“We cannot continue to normalise bloodshed. Government is working with security agencies and community structures to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable and that displaced communities can return safely,” Ramnap said.

The General Overseer of Evangelical Bible Outreach Ministries, Prophet Isa Elbuba, described the killings as a test of the nation’s conscience.

“This is beyond politics. It is about humanity. If we do not rise now to protect innocent lives, history will judge us harshly,” he said.

Director General of the Plateau Peace Building Agency, Dr. Julie Sanda, stressed the need for early warning and early response mechanisms.

“We have the data, we have the warnings. What we need is swift action before these attacks happen, not after,” she noted.

Peace advocate and President of the Gideon and Funmi ParaMallam Peace Foundation, Dr. Gideon ParaMallam, said victims’ voices must remain central to the conversation.

“Those who have lost family and livelihoods are not just statistics. Their pain must drive policy and intervention,” he stated.

Some victims at the event shared accounts of losing relatives and being displaced from their communities. They urged government and security agencies to prioritize protection and justice over rhetoric.

Managing Director of News Central TV, Kayode Akintemi, said the town hall was part of the station’s effort to create a platform for dialogue and solutions.

He said, “We are here to find solutions to the challenge of insecurity that we have in Plateau state .

“We are one wether Fulani,Igbo ,Yoruba ,Hausa everybody .

“We must find solution for ensuring Peace in the middle Belt

The media has a role to amplify the voices of those affected and to push for accountability. This conversation must not end here,” Akintemi said.

Participants agreed on the need for stronger collaboration between communities, civil society, and government to address insecurity, rebuild trust, and ensure justice for victims across the Middle Belt.

The Middle Belt region has for years grappled with recurring incidents of violent attacks, often linked to communal conflicts, banditry and reprisals, leading to loss of lives, displacement of communities and destruction of livelihoods.

The situation has continued to raise national concern over insecurity in the area.

Many Displaced As Windstorm Ravages Kebbi Communities

Published

A windstorm has destroyed several houses, food storage facilities and property worth millions of naira in Suru Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, affected many communities, including Sambera, Jeroki, Becinga, Nassarawa, Tunga Soja, Tauken Mage, Tunga Muminu Oro and Ciwan Wanzam.

The storm reportedly blew off roofs, damaged residential buildings and destroyed food storage facilities, leaving many families displaced.

Residents of the affected communities, however, according to The PUNCH, confirmed that no lives were lost in the disaster.

The member representing Suru Constituency in the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Faruku Abubakar Maisudan, visited the affected communities to assess the level of destruction and sympathise with victims.

During the visit, the lawmaker described the incident as unfortunate and urged the victims to remain calm despite the losses recorded.

Addressing residents, Maisudan said, “My heart goes out to you in this difficult moment, and I urge you to accept it as a trial from Almighty Allah.”

The lawmaker said the level of destruction required urgent government attention, especially as many residents had lost their homes and food reserves.

Some of the affected residents said the windstorm came suddenly and caused heavy damage before they could salvage their belongings.

They said many families were now in need of shelter, food and other basic items following the destruction of their homes and stores.

The victims appealed to the state government, emergency agencies and public-spirited individuals to come to their aid.

According to them, the destruction of food storage facilities has worsened their hardship, especially for households that depend on stored grains and other farm produce.

Officials of the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) accompanied the lawmaker during the assessment visit.

The agency’s officials assured residents that the state government would respond to the disaster and provide relief materials to cushion the effects on affected families.

A SEMA official said assistance would soon be delivered to the communities after proper assessment of the damage.

The official said the government was aware of the plight of the victims and would take steps to reduce their suffering.

Maisudan assured the victims that he would present their condition before the state House of Assembly and Governor Nasir Idris for urgent intervention.

He said, “I will ensure your condition is presented to the appropriate authorities so that immediate support can reach you without delay.”

The lawmaker added that he would continue to follow up on the matter until affected residents receive the necessary support.

He also urged community leaders to compile details of those affected to enable government agencies to provide assistance to the right beneficiaries.
