June 12: MKO Abiola refused to sell presidential mandate to Abacha – Oshiomhole

Published

on

Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has said that the late MKO Abiola refused to sell his presidential mandate to the late former military Head of State, Sani Abacha.

Oshiomhole disclosed this during a lecture on June 12 titled “June 12 and Beyond,” which focused on the development of democracy and security issues.

The event took place in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.

Oshiomhole said he was part of a group from the Nigeria Labour Congress that met with Abacha in Abuja after the June 12 election was canceled.

“General Abacha told us he was ready to tolerate anything and do anything for MKO Abiola.

“The one thing he was not ready to tolerate was the idea that Abiola had proclaimed himself President of Nigeria,” Oshiomhole said.

He said that even though there was pressure from government officials and middlemen, Abiola would not give up the responsibility given to him by the people of Nigeria.

“He told those who sent us that he was elected President of Nigeria and would not sell the mandate entrusted to him by the Nigerian people,” he said.

Oshiomhole said Abiola’s actions showed bravery, love for his country, and putting others before himself.

He pointed out that Abiola didn’t give in and stood firm, even though many Nigerians had voted for him and made big sacrifices.

The senator encouraged young Nigerians to learn from June 12, calling Abiola a symbol of unity who won in a way that went beyond differences in ethnicity and religion.

Oshiomhole noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to speeding up changes to the constitution in order to create state police forces.

“The President is really committed to moving quickly and getting the state police amendment passed.

“He has clearly told us to get it done, but he can’t just make it happen on his own,” he said.

The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has hinted on the emergence of a new Vice President, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, and Senate President.

Primate Ayodele also warned of underground plans to rig the 2027 general elections.

He disclosed this during the release of the 32nd edition of his annual prophecy book, ‘Warnings To The Nations’.

The presentation was done during a world press conference on Saturday at his Lagos headquarters church.

According to Primate Ayodele: “I foresee a new Vice President, a new Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senate President and a new Federal Minister.

“I foresee a lot of underground plans to rig the 2027 elections. I foresee a former Head of State will not support Tinubu.”

The popular Nigerian prophet also disclosed that the North would be angry with President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

He warned that Tinubu’s victory in the 2027 elections is not yet certain, stressing that a lot of Nigerians will rise up against him.

“The Northern parts of the country will be angry with Tinubu. The ruling party will be struggling to sustain their federal or the seat at the Centre.

“I foresee that the Tinubu victory is not yet certain except Tinubu takes a bold step.

“A lot of people will rise up against Tinubu. Tinubu will want to do last minute changes even of the Service Chiefs,” he said.

The clergyman further disclosed that Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State will win the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

US to closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 elections — Congressman

Published

on

The United States’ administration of President Donald Trump will closely monitor Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 general elections, US Congressman, Riley Moore, has said

Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia, while responding to questions about Nigeria’s next general election, described the conduct of the polls as an issue that Washington will be paying “very close attention to.”

He made the remarks in an interview with NoireTV posted on the platform’s social media pages on Sunday.

Asked whether the United States could do more to support credible elections in Nigeria, Moore said, “What I’d say is that we’re certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections unfold and how they’re executed. And that’s something that myself and the administration are going to be paying very close attention to.”

The lawmaker also disclosed that the US House of Representatives was considering an appropriations bill containing provisions relating to Nigeria, particularly on religious freedom and US security assistance.

“We’re working on Chris (Smith)’s bill, which obviously I’m a co-sponsor of that bill. But I’d say, more importantly, what people need to pay attention to is the appropriations bill that we’re going to have on the floor today,” Moore said.

According to him, the proposed legislation contains “pretty strong and aggressive language” on Nigeria’s relationship with the United States.

“There’s a lot of language that I put on that bill that’s inside of it that relates to Nigeria and the persecution of Christians and restrictions on security assistance to the government of Nigeria, and steps that they have to take.

“That bill’s likely to become law. We’re about to, hopefully, pass that here today. And so there’s some pretty strong and aggressive language in that bill that’s going to be binding as it relates to our relationship to Nigeria moving forward,” he added.

Moore said he would continue engaging the Trump administration on Nigeria-related issues and revealed he was scheduled to meet the US president.

“I continue to work with the administration on next steps that we’re going to take. I’m actually going to see President Trump tonight. I’ll be having dinner with him and some other members, so yeah, I continue to talk to him about these issues, and it’s very important to him,” he said.

Moore is a co-sponsor of the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, introduced alongside Congressman Chris Smith in February.

The proposed legislation seeks to require the U.S. Secretary of State to submit periodic reports to Congress on efforts to address religious persecution and mass atrocities in Nigeria.

The Smith-Moore bill proposes assessments of Nigeria’s compliance with international religious freedom obligations, U.S. security assistance, sanctions, humanitarian support, and measures taken by the Nigerian government to protect vulnerable communities and prosecute perpetrators of attacks.

PUNCH Online also reports that the US House Appropriations Committee in April 2026 passed provisions in its annual State Department funding bill that impose stricter oversight and conditions on financial assistance to Nigeria.

The bill, forwarded to Congress for consideration, stipulates that 50 per cent of funds earmarked for Nigeria under foreign assistance titles will be withheld until it is certified that the government is taking “effective steps” to curb religious violence.

It also demands that funds must support investigations and prosecutions of violence committed by Fulani militia groups.

It further states that the government must facilitate the safe return of displaced persons.
