Actor Baba Ijesa Released From Prison After Three Years

Published

on

Nollywood actor, Olarenwaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesa, has been released from prison following a Court of Appeal judgment overturning his earlier conviction of sexually assaulting a minor.

In 2021, controversy trailed the actor over a sexual allegation involving a minor. In July 2022, the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja sentenced him to 16 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty on multiple counts relating to the assault of a 14-year-old girl.

As seen on X by TVC correspondent on Saturday, a short viral video clip capturing actor expressing relief, a video presumed to be recorded shortly after his release.

In a brief phone conversation captured in the clip, he was heard saying in Yoruba, ”Apase, I’m out… I just came out.

“I want to relax. I just want to leave here so I decided to inform you. Thank you for supporting me. I will call you.”

Activist and Nollywood actor, Yomi Fabiyi, via his official Instagram page welcomed the Appeal Court’s judgment, expressing that the ruling ensured clarity to what he described as a mishandled case.

Fabiyi said the decision “clears” the actor and urged the public and authorities to handle sensitive allegations with care.

“He is not just back but better,” Fabiyi wrote, adding that the lengthy legal battle underscored the need for “fairness, due process and protection of rights in all cases involving minors.”

He also maintained that as a human rights advocate, he stands against all forms of abuse.

“We never and will never condone or support any form of sexual abuse, let alone on children or minors.

“We will continue to advocate for justice and protection of fundamental human rights,” he stated.

It was gathered that the appeal court in its judgment, held that the evidence tendered was insufficient to sustain the earlier conviction, leading to Baba Ijesha’s release.

Published

on

At the time of his de@th, Lt. Haruna was a medical doctor attached to the 6 Battalion Regimental Medical Officer (RMO), having been married for only five months.

Tears flowed freely as the young military officer, Lt. (Dr) Samson Haruna, allegedly burnt to de@th by his wife, Retyit Dalong Haruna, was laid to rest on Saturday, November 15, 2025, with full military honours in his hometown in Pushit district, Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State.

Recall that the tragic incident happened during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, where the wife reportedly set the 31-year-old army officer on fire during a domestic dispute.

At the time of his de@th, Lt. Haruna was a medical doctor attached to the 6 Battalion Regimental Medical Officer (RMO), having been married for only five months.

Reports then had indicated that the couple had a heated argument, which resulted in the wife dousing him with petrol (PMS) and setting him on fire, and he d!ed as a result of severe burns he suffered weeks later.

A source in the barracks who narrated the sad incident to our correspondent had said the young officer sustained severe burns and was immediately stabilised at the Military Reference Section (MRS) in the barracks before being evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further management.

The source added that Lt. Haruna could not survive as he succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life.

Though her family has tried to exonerate her from the crime claiming that she had been freed, the source insisted that she was actually the main suspect.

Another source, who is also a military officer serving in the same formation and also from Plateau State, reliably told our correspondent that Retyit has been handed over to the police for further investigations and would be charged in court at the end of the investigations.

‘Get Ready For More Hard Time’ – Marwa Tells Drug Barons, Cartels As Tinubu Extends Appointment

Published

on

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Buba Marwa, has expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his reappointment, which will enable him to continue ongoing efforts against the drug menace in the country.

It was reports that Marwa, in a statement on Saturday through the Director of Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, thanked Tinubu for recognising the ongoing efforts against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the country.

Marwa, who was reappointed for a second tenure of five years on Friday, 14th November 2025, warned drug barons, traffickers and their cartels to quit the criminal trade or face a harder time during his second tenure.

He said, “First of all, what a surprise, I did not expect to come back from jumat service to meet these great felicitations, dancing and singing by our personnel. Thank you very much. We would like to thank the almighty God, because always the glory has to go to Him for everything. We thank the President and Commander-in-Chief for the special recognition of our collective efforts and the new mandate for us to continue with the war against drug abuse and trafficking. I thank the management, officers, men and women of the agency, who continue to provide service to the nation 24/7, in spite of the risks that you all face.”

While also expressing appreciation to local and international partners who have collaborated with the agency to rid Nigeria of illicit substances, Marwa also acknowledged the unflinching support of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.

He stressed, “First, this word must go to the cartels. The cartels have not seen anything yet. I promise them this second tenure is going to be hell and bleak for them. Drugs shall not pass, in or out or within Nigeria.” He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment towards President Tinubu’s mandate, assuring that “in line with our Act, we will continue to do our level best. I remember in my inaugural speech, the day I took over, and I said very clearly that NDLEA will be feared by the drug cartels. And that’s just the beginning.

“At the same time, I must appeal to those who are engaged in illicit drug trafficking that this is the right time for them to drop that criminal business and face something legitimate. It is in line with that that we established the Alternative Development Unit, which seeks to persuade those who are perpetrating the illicit drug activities, particularly cannabis growers, who are our greatest challenge in Nigeria, to desist from the habit, collaborate with us. We are going to support towards licit cultivation of crops that are legitimate, legal, and you can sleep with your two eyes closed.

“But those who refuse to do that can be sure that the NDLEA is up and able on its task of law enforcement. You will be arrested, the drugs will be seized, and your assets will be confiscated. So, you come out from jail, there will be nothing left.”

He also assured that the Agency will remain committed to its efforts to reduce drug demand.

He added, “I’ll take the opportunity again to announce the rededication of our efforts towards prevention, sensitization, counseling, treatment, and rehabilitation of our children in our 30 rehabilitation centres. And with the support of the President and the Renewed Hope Agenda, seven more rehab centres are coming up under the 2025 budget that will now make every state to have its own rehab centre.

“And as well, there will be zonal rehab, more rehab centres and we are getting full collaboration from the Honorable Minister of Health. We appreciate his efforts also, and the Honorable Minister of Education, who has accepted our recommendation for drug tests for our children on admission to tertiary institutions, so that with this we can catch them young before it gets into addiction stage. May the Almighty God bless our President, bless all those that are supporting us, bless the officers, men and women of NDLEA.”
