Police hunt gunmen, recover car after attack on Ngige’s convoy

Published

on

Some yet-to-be-identified assailants have attacked the convoy of a former governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in the Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

According to Ngige’s former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, the former governor was not in the convoy at the time of the attack.

However, a policeman in the pilot car was shot, and his gun and uniform were taken by the assailants, who were reportedly dressed in police and army uniforms.

Some eyewitnesses near the scene said the incident happened on Thursday, and a lady who was recording the shooting was also shot by the gunmen.

“A shop owner who raced to find out what was happening was also shot, but he only lost a lot of blood and will be operated upon soon to remove the bullets. He is expected to make a full recovery. The pilot car was riddled with bullets.

“No policeman was killed, and the escort leader who was shot has been operated upon and is expected to make a full recovery. The shop owner was lucky as the bullets didn’t lodge in his spine,” one of the eyewitnesses said.

The spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, saying that the police had launched a coordinated state-wide manhunt for the fleeing armed hoodlums.

Ikenga said the Mercedes-Benz SUV earlier snatched by the criminals had been successfully recovered following a coordinated police pursuit.

He said, “The Anambra State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that a white Mercedes-Benz SUV, earlier snatched by armed criminals, has been successfully recovered following a coordinated police response during a pursuit operation.

“A combined team of Police Tactical Operatives from the Operations Department Awka, the Rapid Response Squad Akwuzu, and the Special Anti-Cultism Unit Enugu-Ukwu, while in hot pursuit of armed criminals who attacked a police patrol team at Eziowelle along Umuoji Road, encountered a police convoy that promptly joined in the engagement.

“The convoy swiftly aligned with the pursuing operatives and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel, forcing the criminals to abandon the snatched white Mercedes-Benz SUV and flee the scene under intense pressure. Meanwhile, one police operative who sustained a minor gunshot injury is stable and currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.

“Preliminary information indicates that the officers in the convoy are attached to Senator Chris Ngige, former Governor of Anambra State and former Minister of Labour and Employment.

“The recovered vehicle has been secured and taken into police custody for further investigation, as operatives intensify a coordinated state-wide manhunt for the fleeing armed hoodlums.

“Further developments shall be communicated, please.”

“The victim, who was abducted on 23 March 2026 at Aganya Community, was rescued by naval personnel at Coconut Jetty after he was abandoned by his captors around the Opuoma waterside due to intensified operational pressure since the incident was first reported with sustained intelligence-led patrols, technological enablers, as well as coordinated action on land and around the creeks to block any possible escape routes,” the statement read.

11 killed, 50 houses burnt in Nasarawa community clashes

Published

on

The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the death of 11 residents of Udege Development Area in the Nasarawa Local Government of the state following renewed clashes between two communities in the area.

The two warring communities, Akyawa and Udege Kasa, clashed in the early hours of Friday over some disagreements.

In a statement made available to journalists in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Ramhan Nansel, explained that the casualties prompted the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, to visit the communities with a view to restoring normalcy.

According to Nansel, during the CP’s visit to the affected communities of Akyawa and Udege Kasa on April 3, 2026, Mohammed expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, which claimed the lives of 11 persons and led to the burning of several houses.

He stated that the CP commiserated with the families of the deceased and the entire community, assuring them of the command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that justice is served.

The PPRO said, “The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the same day, involved hoodlums suspected to have carried out a reprisal attack over the alleged killing of two of their kinsmen.

“In the course of the attack, 11 persons were killed, while about 50 houses were burnt in Akyawa and two houses in Udege Kasa.

“In response, CP Shetima has ordered an intensive manhunt for all perpetrators of the heinous act, directing tactical teams and investigative units to ensure their prompt identification, arrest, and prosecution.”

Nansel noted that in order to prevent any further breakdown of law and order, the CP had also directed the immediate reinforcement and sustained deployment of police personnel, in synergy with the military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, to provide adequate security and restore lasting peace in the area.

“A stakeholders’ meeting was held during the visit, where the CP urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to support ongoing investigations.

“The Command reassures members of the public that normalcy has been restored to the affected communities, while proactive measures are in place to prevent any recurrence of violence,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, there are rumours that the communities came under violent attacks, as suspected Fulani militias, believed to be bandits, reportedly invaded Akyawa and Udege Kasa late Thursday night.

The latest assault, according to local sources, is believed to be a continuation of an earlier violence in nearby Sabon Gida (Gidan Ada Ogiri), where houses, farm produce and other valuable properties were destroyed.

Residents lamented that barely 48 hours after the attack on Sabon Gida, the fresh assault occurred, heightening fears among residents who say no one can predict which community may be targeted next.

Sources expressed concern that the attackers had been sighted moving around neighbouring communities prior to the incident, yet no decisive preventive measures were taken by security authorities.

“It is becoming unbearable. They abduct at will and now invade our entire communities unchecked. People are living in fear and fleeing their homes for safety,” a resident lamented.

Our correspondent gathered that the affected communities, once known for their mining activities and vibrant local economy, have in recent times been severely impacted by recurring insecurity attributed to suspected bandit groups.

Residents are therefore calling on the Nasarawa State Government to act swiftly to contain the situation and prevent further devastation, especially as farmers have begun planting for the new season amid fears of renewed attacks.
